Marine Collagen - THANK YOU! ♥️

MNetters are amazing, thank you!

Since giving birth to my last child almost thirty years ago, my hair just got thinner and finer. Menopause was the killer - it just got worse and worse…I could clearly see my scalp, particularly around my hairline and parting. Over the years, I’ve spent £££ on shampoos, conditioners, pills, serums…you name it.
At the beginning of the year, I saw a thread on here & marine collagen was recommended. I decided to give it a go, and at just over 3 months in, my hair is definitely thicker and the density is very noticeable. Good condition too.
THIS STUFF WORKS!
This is the one I purchased- I didn’t like it stirred in drinks, so I take it in the morning in porridge.
Thanks lovely people of MN for a brilliant recommendation!

Sadly there is no scientific evidence that collagen has any effect. It's a protein, & proteins are broken down to their constituent amino acids by your digestive system, so your body has no idea they have come from collagen, it just uses them like it would any other amino acid. More protein may well be good, but it's not going to magically reform as collagen in the various parts of your body.

I see these comments pop up a lot of threads like this and wonder if they fact check themselves or just nod along to the last opinion someone else had on the matter

there have beenstudies and analyses of evidence of the benefits of taking hydrolysed collagen and they aren’t very difficult to find with the use of the internet or chatGPT

Not true. Studies have shown that collagen supplementation can lead to an increase in collagen content, bone density, and skin hydration. Research may be in its early stages but the evidence is there. I can see the improvements in my hair and skin (my hairdresser thinks it's some kind of miracle) so I'll continue to take it. My cousin was advised by the oncologist to take it whilst having chemo and had a full head of healthy hair after treatment. Obviously i cant say it was 100% due to collagen but her Dr believed it helps his patients. Recent studies are showing benefits in blood pressure/cholesterol and heart health as well.

I made the mistake of buying one tub of berry flavoured and one tub of plain. I don’t recommend the berry flavoured with anything really! I have it in fruit smoothies which is ok. When I finish that tub I can start being more consistent

Yeah, I think plain is the way forward. The plain one I use is completely undetectable in hot drinks. Haven’t tried it in cold, but I’d imagine it to be the same.

Vinvertebrate · 10/04/2025 10:16

Like a PP I use Vital Proteins marine collagen and take 10g a day sprinkled in drinks, yogurt, etc. it has very little taste and not at all fishy like others I have tried. A bonus is that I had an operation recently and the 8 inch wound on my abdomen is healing at an incredible speed.

For peri hair specifically I also find ‘Centred’ products pretty good.

Globules · 10/04/2025 10:22

Ok ladies. I'm trusting you.

Bovine collagen ordered.

Phunkychicken · 10/04/2025 11:11

Anyone have any idea whether this is any good for people with EDS/hypermobikity. As our collagen is crap Im not sure taking more will help? Yet am in so much pain (lost so much hair/skin rubbish) willing to try anything . . .

Would you mind letting me know what MG the flaxseed capsules are? I found some on Amazon that are 3000MG. Is that good? Thanks

The stuff I use is 2000, so I'd say so! 😀

Actual science based ( as @Wonderknicks says ) independent studies are very very limited.
Those that do exist are on small numbers of people.
I think there’s less evidence that collagen supplements helps hair regrow. There is some evidence it improves condition though.

There is definitely medical evidence collagen supplements can cause calcification of the arteries which is one of the reasons I’m cautious at the moment.

I ordered Marine Collagen immediately after reading the initial post on this thread. It arrived yesterday. I'm worrying it will taste horrible in drinks and so I'll be put off using it.

Same - it arrived last night via prime and I've had it already this morning in a shake, couldn't taste it at all 😀will report back in a couple of months

pearbottomjeans · 10/04/2025 14:49

I see such a big difference when I take collagen. So many of my autoimmune problems (joint/connective tissue) ease. My skin and hair and nails do get better too even though it's bovine. Mine are £15 for 90 capsules but often think of upgrading as surely if it's more expensive it's gonna be better quality.... right...? 😁

henlake7 · 10/04/2025 15:01

APocketFullOfRye · 10/04/2025 04:29

@henlake7 I agree with @TimeForBedSaidZebadee re the Tumeric. You can buy it in capsules as well as adding it to your food.

Before I discovered the Tumeric I took vitamin d3 ( with added k2 ) and my back ache completely disappeared. I was actually taking it due to covid recommendations so was surprised about the pain going.
So both are great and my dh started the Tumeric capsules for aching joints in his hands and has had significant improvement so far.

If you re looking at taking collagen just for the pain and you are a vegan there are other alternatives. You don’t need to sacrifice your veganism.

Edited

Ive been taking turmeric for years. Glucosamine, vit D, etc...all the supplements!
Have lost a ton of weight, try and keep mobile, take HRT. God knows what my joints would be like without all that!!LOL
I think collagen is the only thing left I havent tried. If I was younger I might be more inclined to try the vegan one but as your collagen production decreases with age I think I need all the help I can get.

I'll have to revisit this thread in 3-4 months to report any difference!

Poonu · 10/04/2025 15:12

Couldn't decide between priority of joints, skin, hair etc. So bought a collagen powder with type 1,2 & 3.
Miracle stuff - tasteless in coffee.

At least you are taking the marine one as the increase in the use of the bovine collagen is causing large scale deforestation issues.

If there was real evidence I might go for it ( vegetarian since 1980 ) but tbh apart from my hair, as I don’t have wrinkles ( age 58 ) that’s the only reason and atm I’m trying Regaine so I’m going to wait and see.

If nothing then I’ll be back on this thread and looking to see if Wonderknicks has any more research. The Jury’s out for me

Can I ask which one you bought please ?

Poonu · 11/04/2025 08:26

Sure will pm you

Poonu · 11/04/2025 08:42

@WivVestwood I did some research into the differences between the types marine(2) and bovine (1&3) and concluded I wanted the benefit of both. From my research the powder came up more beneficial compared to capsules.
If money was no issue I would use something like Skinade
(I found there were 5 types of collagen lol)
I appreciate we all have different numbers eeds and experiences and I love that we can share that.
Ps. Great username

Thanks for the link.
Im wondering why the hard sell with this company.
They even highlight in Yellow that Holland and Barrett are a Russian company which is clearly simply not true.

My sister tells me the company is a “bit Brexit” 😬

I didn’t realise that the time, though the clue is in their name, I guess. My skin is great though!

I have used them for Lions Mane but I don’t recall all the slagging off other companies
Good to hear you’re happy with results so far

I have high hopes. I'm a few years post menopause. I've always had dry skin, but this is getting crazy, so I've just bought some marine collagen along with another multi vit for skin. H&B have a BOGOF offer at the moment. I don't mind aging, and not looking like a 20 year old, but the dry skin is uncomfortable. Mine arrives Monday.

summersleftus · 12/04/2025 17:53

Try nutrition geeks bovine collagen, works for me and reasonably priced

I can recommend turmeric for joint pain. I started getting joint pain in my knees and fingers in my late fifties. Someone recommended turmeric so I gave it a go. Within a month I had no pain, I'm 64 now and still pain free. Honestly it's amazing.

Hi
I'm looking in to supplements for joint pain, stiffness and enthesitis. I have an autoimmune arthritis and wanted to try and manage some of the worst symptoms myself.
Would you mind sharing which brand you use please and how much you take?
Thank you 😊
