Marine Collagen - THANK YOU! ♥️

MNetters are amazing, thank you!

Since giving birth to my last child almost thirty years ago, my hair just got thinner and finer. Menopause was the killer - it just got worse and worse…I could clearly see my scalp, particularly around my hairline and parting. Over the years, I’ve spent £££ on shampoos, conditioners, pills, serums…you name it.
At the beginning of the year, I saw a thread on here & marine collagen was recommended. I decided to give it a go, and at just over 3 months in, my hair is definitely thicker and the density is very noticeable. Good condition too.
THIS STUFF WORKS!
This is the one I purchased- I didn’t like it stirred in drinks, so I take it in the morning in porridge.
Thanks lovely people of MN for a brilliant recommendation!

I do mine in a smoothie. Frozen berries, milk or kefir, protein powder, collagen

CheerfulBunny · 09/04/2025 15:29

I've posted a couple of times about my experience of collagen supplements. My hair has never been so thick and has grown at the temples where I've always had thinness, even as a teenager! I'm 51 and have nice clear, smoother skin as well. You must be very, very consistent though and give it a few months without giving up - when I dabbled with it I didn't see the results.

SlightlyJaded · 09/04/2025 16:53

I am always a bit overwhelmed by these threads as I want to try All The Things and see All The Benefits, but can't afford everything and never know which to pick.

I am 55
Achy of joint
Cannot take HRT for medical reasons
Slightly thinning hair around temples.
Can afford up to around £30 per month
Good a sticking to routines.

The only supplement I currently take is a Jointace one that contains glucosamine/tumeric and chondroitin - mostly for joints and aches, but in all honesty I haven't noticed a difference yet (nearly 2 months)

So Collagen (or something else). Can anyone advise specifically?

Marine?
Bovine?
Flaxseed?
Powder?
Capsules?

ParsnipPuree · 09/04/2025 17:07

Thank you and one last question- was growth just on your head or elsewhere on your body?

INeedAnotherName · 09/04/2025 17:31

@SlightlyJaded I was told (by GP) you need at least 1500 of glucosamine daily for at least 3 months, and if you didn't notice a difference by then it won't work so don't bother trying for any longer. What strength are the Jointace ones?

Mine sort of work, ie takes the pain down from a 10 to a 6, so I'm looking for something else to either replace the glucosamine or go in tandem. I'm also broke so can't keep experimenting - the marine gum.mies didn't help my joints.

Gwenhwyfar · 09/04/2025 17:49

I've been taking collagen (both marine and beef) for a while, maybe a year, and while I'm happy to continue, I can't see any obvious difference to my hair, skin or joints.

TheRoundTable1983 · 09/04/2025 15:21

You need to be consistent with it every day. Mine comes with a scoop, and it’s 2 scoops per serving. It’s the first thing I do when I get up, collagen coffee! It’s become ingrained in my routine now.

I have to admit I only take the one scoop most days because I'm being careful with calories.

I have a thread running on here as I started ancient and brave bovine collagen 3 weeks ago and I am using that thread to track progress

I am not paid or have any affiliation to anything but I am 42 and joints hurt and noticed my hair has thinned so wanted to give something a shot. I did quite a bit of research and there are studies done on hydrolysed collagen (the one I use) on effects on athletes and improvement to joint pain and the added bonus of hair and skin improvement

Studies were based on 20ml a day which is 4 scoops of ancient and brave so that’s what I started with from the off. I am already seeing new growth in hair and my skin is glowing and hair is definitely shinier so we will see how things progress

you must take it with vitamin c as it helps synthesis collagen so I have also been taking it alongside the bovine powder

XiCi · 09/04/2025 20:00

2 scoops of bovine collagen in my morning coffee is also 18g protein which is a big plus point

ChuffKnows · 09/04/2025 20:11

Does anyone know if the plant based alternatives work and if so, which ones would you recommend?
Thanks

XiCi · 09/04/2025 20:44

I can't imagine a genetically modified plant based one would deliver the same results. Id be really reluctant to spend money on that

I've found that collagen helps for skin and hair, but not joints. Flaxseed oil, however, has been amazing for me. I take 2 high-strength capsules a day (bought from Amazon, whichever is cheapest, I just check the concentration). It's really helped with my hypermobile knees since perimeno has also made an appearance... I do take HRT, too, which may have an impact, but I took the oil before this, and had a noticeable improvement.

Would you mind letting me know what MG the flaxseed capsules are? I found some on Amazon that are 3000MG. Is that good? Thanks

henlake7 · 07/04/2025 12:52

Glad to hear it works!
Ive just started taking marine collagen last week. Big decision for me as Im a vegan but while I can live with my perimeno thinning hair the joint pain was really affecting my life.
Really hoping it helps me too!😉

I can recommend turmeric for joint pain. I started getting joint pain in my knees and fingers in my late fifties. Someone recommended turmeric so I gave it a go. Within a month I had no pain, I'm 64 now and still pain free. Honestly it's amazing.

Happilyobtuse · 09/04/2025 22:13

I just started taking Nutrition geeks collagen. Has great reviews, too early for me to give feedback as I started today! 😂

AliceMcK · 09/04/2025 22:35

I started taking the capsules a couple of years ago for fibromyalgia pain. It definitely helped. I didn’t notice it until I stopped and realised the pain was getting worse again. it definitely helped my face too, I’ve always been told I look young for my age but my flares were making me look so tired and worn out. I found the marine collagen helps me look less tired than I’m feeling at times.

You’ve just reminded me I need to order some more.

I made the mistake of buying one tub of berry flavoured and one tub of plain. I don’t recommend the berry flavoured with anything really! I have it in fruit smoothies which is ok. When I finish that tub I can start being more consistent

I have just started taking a marine collagen gummy which also contains Vit C.

I use this and have noticed a difference in my hair and nails
Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Powder Supplement (Type I, III) - Hydrolyzed

APocketFullOfRye · 10/04/2025 04:11

Thanks for the link.
Im wondering why the hard sell with this company.
They even highlight in Yellow that Holland and Barrett are a Russian company which is clearly simply not true.

Wonderknicks · 10/04/2025 04:19

Sadly there is no scientific evidence that collagen has any effect. It's a protein, & proteins are broken down to their constituent amino acids by your digestive system, so your body has no idea they have come from collagen, it just uses them like it would any other amino acid. More protein may well be good, but it's not going to magically reform as collagen in the various parts of your body.

There’s still little data / trials on this
Of note plant based supplements for collagen aren’t actually collagen. They are amino acids that promote collagen and vitamin c production. So you need to have some level of collagen in your natural makeup for there to be an effect.
We do all have natural collagen obviously, it just reduces with age.

kinkytoes · 10/04/2025 04:23

I take bovine collagen and my hair no longer falls out like it used to, and my skin has improved so that I don't need to wear foundation every day.

So I'm sold on that 😄

Now I'd really like to know if these eyelash growth serums work!

@henlake7 I agree with @TimeForBedSaidZebadee re the Tumeric. You can buy it in capsules as well as adding it to your food.

Before I discovered the Tumeric I took vitamin d3 ( with added k2 ) and my back ache completely disappeared. I was actually taking it due to covid recommendations so was surprised about the pain going.
So both are great and my dh started the Tumeric capsules for aching joints in his hands and has had significant improvement so far.

If you re looking at taking collagen just for the pain and you are a vegan there are other alternatives. You don’t need to sacrifice your veganism.
