Summer shoes to replace white trainers

What do people wear these days?? I always wear Superga white trainers or Van type slip on trainers but I'm not sure things are going to cut it this year. I don't like the clumpy strappy sandals. Any ideas?

I did. It was my staple look. Very depressed now it's no longer acceptable.

Why is it not acceptable? Says who? Who decides what is acceptable?

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 30/03/2025 02:47

Boat/Deck shoes are making a huge comeback this year.

I like these croc sandals and I usually live in trainers.
So they're fine for wider feet?

Amazon do half size sandals for wide feet now and some of them are really nice. I'm a wide half size and it's great to be able to buy sandals that actually fit and don't leave your little toe hanging off the edge.

Great, I'll have a look! Thanks for your reply

To anyone who owns Saltwater sandals…are they comfortable and are the actually 100% waterproof? I like to walk the dog on the beach and would love to go for a paddle with him without worrying about my footwear!

Ha! I’ve just bought a brand new pair of white Supergas…I think they look great with dresses, jeans, very fresh.

My favourite and most comfortable sandals are my fuschia Hotter Tourists. Like walking on air.
They're on their last legs now and the current colour options from Hotter aren’t brilliant but I may choose a gold pair.

jolies1 · 30/03/2025 08:57

Wear trainers but something more colourful or on trend?

Nothanksiwillwalk · 30/03/2025 09:14

I have just found rocketdog trainers, Im not sure if they are really unfashionable or not but they are the most comfortable things I've ever worn.

I have:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0CSKLWT96?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

And I've bought some white ones for summer (although I now know from this thread that this may be unfashionable!)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B07V437V2D?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title

They do lots of colourful ones

Otherwise I have bought a couple of colourful ballet flats for summer (plus have my old birkenstocks)

I am very glad i am middle aged because i will not be giving up my trainers. I have ridiculous feet which blister in everything and i cannot wear heels of any type. I will be wearing my trainers again this summer. I have them in lots of colours and am very happy with them. I have Birkies for very hot weather but living in Scotland means those days are few.

Thoughtsonstuff · 30/03/2025 09:38

Some excellent options mentioned. Thanks all.

The reason I was slightly concerned (and obviously yes I can dress myself without worrying about any one else's opinions as I've mentioned above so no more posts saying the word "acceptable " pretty please! I didnt really mean to use that word I promise! 😊) is the attached article from the Telegraph. It hadn't occurred to me it was a stale look particularly in view of that being my staple summer look. Hence why my enquiries as it's also nice to have a change.

I'm thinking from your posts coloured trainers in a more trainery look (rather than trainer lace-ups of Superga), Toms shoes. Backless clog things although the Hush suede might be too hot but I will wait for developments in the material front as the weather gets warmer. Ive also found some servicable espadrilles which may be good.

Deck/boat shoes really takes me back! I used to wear those brown Timberland ones in the 90s and now my teenage son does too. I think some daintier ones might be interesting

It doesn't seem to want to attach the image. Anyway it's the style section Ask Lisa.

Dear Lisa,
I’m 55 and a classic 12 petite at 5ft 2in, and have blonde hair and blue eyes. I have about 20 pretty dresses for summer that I love wearing for comfort. As the dress-and-trainers look is now overdone and outdated, what should be my “go-to” look for summer comfort and style?
– Carol
Dear Carol,
You may not have to give up on those dresses completely – but I agree about the trainers. What seemed a fresh combination a few years ago is stale now. Just a few tweaks could solve

What about Mary Jane’s from Hotter, good range of sizes and colours and they are comfortable. I didn’t like them till I tried a pair on.

PrimalLass · 30/03/2025 10:15

Yes and yes.

Jewel1968 · 30/03/2025 10:30

@Nothanksiwillwalk they look really nice to my eye. And comfortable from what you say. I might invest

MrsCarson · 30/03/2025 10:31

I've ended up with a pair of these, I prefer my toes covered for travel, I have sandals for once I'm on holiday or very warm weather.

If the Torygraph thinks it’s a stale look….then I’m all for it!

HighLineGal · 30/03/2025 10:44

Hey @Thoughtsonstuff! It’s a dilemma, isn’t it! I have size 9 wide feet so finding shoes that fit and are comfortable is a nightmare.

I am leaning towards New Balance 990s for casual, Hotter flat sandals for warmer days in tan (I found some that don’t look “orthopaedic” via Next), I’ve got some wide fit m&S black flat sandals from last year (feel very minimalist and cool, work well with cropped trousers and jeans but even long black evening trousers)… I also have ballet flats via Vionic. And some pointed flats. These final two go great with slim fit classic blue jeans and blazers.

It all depends on what I’m wearing.

jolies1 · 30/03/2025 10:45

If you love the trainers and dress look could try:

Swapping the floral midis for a longer hem or something plain coloured, simple or tailored like denim, linen or a leopard print if you love a print. Or an ankle length skirt instead of a dress. I’ve bought a white linen one I will wear with a knit and trainers for (proper) spring.

Swap white leather trainers for a coloured pair of sambas, gazelles, Onitsuka Tigers, even a white / off white with black detail will look more current.

Swap a denim jacket for a mac or suede jacket.

If you can bear to move past the dress some nice trainers with a stretch waist wide leg or jersey trouser still looks okay for this spring / summer - M&S have some good ones.

Wear white trainers with a dress if you like it, very few people would judge, and those who do are not worth concerning yourself with.

An alternative I use when I need to be a bit smarter is these shoes: https://www.marksandspencer.com/leather-bow-slip-on-flatform-loafers/p/clp60715994?intid=mobile_app_pdp_share

Super comfy, fairly smart. They might look a bit boatish if you have large feet (I'm a 5.5 but with skinny ankles (which sometimes makes shoes more boatish) and they're OK on me)

Luckily my dresses are all plain anyway as I'm not really a florally person. I did think a skirt and top is tricky as my waist isn't particularly defined but as you say a long skirt might be good. It's all about the proportions perhaps. In the 90s I used to wear bias cut long skirts with trainers (not addidas though) so things really do come around again! Thank you for the ideas.

The fact it's even discussed in the "Torygraph" in the first place should put you off entirely, surely?

Can we still describe the Telegraph as "Tory" these days anyway? Discuss..

I have 3 pairs of those 'knitted' trainers - beige, grey, black. They look like Sketchers but are other brands picked up whenever. They have laces in that don't really perform any function - as no tongue or opening in that area - other than hiding the trainer inners from sight. I mostly wear them with trs, but have worn them with skirts, shorts and dresses. I prefer to wear loafers, mules, clogs type summer footwear for smart occasions. On a plane, I'd travel in trousers if I needed to wear flight socks.

What do you mean by "knitted"? Any examples of brands? I like the sound of not having to do up laces. That's another step in the getting-up itinerary which it's always good to try and avoid.
