What have they done to Elvive?!

I've used Elvive Colour Protect shampoo and conditioner for years and they're just right for my hair as well as being inexpensive. It's been harder to come by lately but now back in stock with different packaging. I've used the conditioner twice now and was expecting it to be the same (haven't noticed "new formula" etc on the labelling) but it smells different and has left my hair looking heavy and greasy both times. It feels like there's a silicon film in my hair and it looks awful. It's so annoying. Has anyone else found the same? I'm kind of hoping I've just got a duff bottle.

Ive tried the Tigi Bed Head Colour Goddess and its not bad. I love the caramel smell. Ive also managed to get a bottle of OGX Colour Retention shampoo from a large Tesco Extra in another town. So that is the next one i shall try.

Jennifer, you might want to read about the lawsuits involving the second shampoo you mentioned…

I’m trying Herbal Essence ROSE (. Used it once yesterday and my hair feels and looks okay. Hopefully it will continue working out well.
I also wrote L’Oreál a complaint on their international Facebook page. No response yet.

No response ever from L’Oreál…

YesItsMe44 · 30/09/2025 05:34

I thought it was me. I thought it might be hair product, but I don't use it everyday. My hair feels lifeless and limp.

Silverbirchleaf · 30/09/2025 10:35

Lifeless and limp was how I found it as well.

Just been using the Pantene shampoo as suggested above. It’s okay, but I don’t feel is The Replacement as yet.

Pantene gives me an allergic reaction.
It’s so hard to find a good new shampoo. Feels like all companies are making cheap non-quality products.

I have recently developed an itchy scalp and am pretty sure it’s since Elvive changed the formula of their colour shampoo and conditioner. Has anyone else experienced this?

Silverbirchleaf · 03/10/2025 18:27

No, no itchy head. Just made my hair look greasey, and even my husband commented on its limp look. Also disliked the smell.

AnonAnonmystery · 03/10/2025 20:57

@Dugsmum yes I had a terribly itchy scalp. I am now using Garnier Ultimate Blends ( The Argan oil one).
However it doesn’t solve my issue as my hair is coloured and I used to use the Red Elvive colour protect :(

Absolutely. It causes itchy scalp (probably an allergic reaction to one or more of the new ingredients in the new formula) in many people.
I and several people tried to contact the company about it but they are ignoring it totally.

My partner also smelled my hair and said “you don’t smell like you”

Damn you L’Oreal!!!!

Thanks. I did use the OGX Colour Retention last night and its even worse than Elvive. Its left a residue in my hair despite rinsing and rinsing. And ive had to keep brushing and brushing my hair today because of it Utter crap. So i wont be using it again. Thankfully i bought it with Tesco Clubcard vouchers. Also agree with the fact that these products are being made with cheap quality ingredients. Probably to save money and make more profit.

Going to have to alternate between Herbal Essences Ignite My Colour and the Tigi Bed Head Colour Goddess. The former seems to keep my hair cleaner for longer. The sulfate free crap just doesnt work for me.

Just used the M and S coconut shampoo and conditioner and been quite impressed. The coconut smell makes it smell fresh. Not expensive either.

I wasn’t aware of it either. Saw it recommended on another thread (Ocado thread?).

Only £1.50 as well!

LadyAvgeek · 16/10/2025 18:19

Has anyone else seen the L'Oréal TV ad. Haven't seen it yet on mainstream channels but on Freeview. Don't have Sky etc so not sure if it's there too. Telling us how good they are at employing younger, older and less able people. Such a caring employer!

Tori276 · 09/03/2026 22:43

I've just used up the last of my stash and found that when I use the new one (horrible smell) I keep breaking out in painful lumps all over my face and neck! I've been using it for years! Why did they have to change it!

LadyAvgeek · 10/03/2026 13:05

After chasing L'Oreal for an answer in January, I received an e-mail full of platitudes (we're sorry, it's not like us etc). What alarmed me was they asked how they could help further to rectify the problem. As if they didn't know! Decided to sit on my reply, finally doing it last week. I said I would be actively avoiding all of their products and throwing away the shampoo. Didn't spell it out but that would indicate I did not want a voucher/gift card, as it would likely be for their products only. Don't think they'll ever own up to this unless someone gets a very bad allergic reaction and files a law suit against them. Have tried John Frieda Volume, was okay. Now on Philip Kingsley Density, only used twice but so far not impressed for premium product....

FancyGreySloth · 10/03/2026 16:37

I managed to get back response, here it is, I told them it was awful and left my hair greasy etc.

Merci for clarifying it was the Colour Protect range 🫶 At L’Oréal Paris, we evolve our formulas to be more responsible and high performing, more green in sourcing and packaging, while keeping that salon worthy result, couleur first, planet in mind 👩✨ If you would like a personalised recommendation, tell us your hair type, natural shade, whether you color at home or in salon, and your top goals, shine, softness, frizz control, and we will match you with your perfect routine 🔥

I have advised them to read the Internet but looks like it is staying as it is.i have also mentioned their facial products which have gone off as well.

They are losing customers.

Impressed it lasted that long! You must have had a big stash of shampoo!

I’ve tried lots if different shampoos but coujdn’t find anything on the high street that I was entirely happy with, so ended up buying Wella professional colour and spending alit more than I used to.

I cant find anything to match the old formula either. The ones i mentioned upthread didnt quite cut it

Tori276 · 10/03/2026 23:07

haha! I was buying the big salon pump bottles. I only have short hair too!

louderthan · 10/03/2026 23:29

I use the Aldi dupe, it’s cheap and pretty much the same as the old formula L’Oréal. In fact I think the conditioner is better!

Yes, the new formulation is horrible. They must know because I’ve written them so many times and they just ignore it. And I thief threats like this in many places and they ignore it. It’s so weird. Don’t you want your customers to keep using your products? Why do you poison people or whatever it is that is happening? They’ve added so many new ingredients and they’ve removed everything good that was ever in the original ones so there’s absolutely nothing that even resembles the old formulation in the new one. It stinks., it gives a severe allergic reaction. It doesn’t really clean the hair. Your hair gets heavy. The next day it’s greasy. It has zero resemblance to the amazing effectiveness of the original formulation.
