What have they done to Elvive?!

I've used Elvive Colour Protect shampoo and conditioner for years and they're just right for my hair as well as being inexpensive. It's been harder to come by lately but now back in stock with different packaging. I've used the conditioner twice now and was expecting it to be the same (haven't noticed "new formula" etc on the labelling) but it smells different and has left my hair looking heavy and greasy both times. It feels like there's a silicon film in my hair and it looks awful. It's so annoying. Has anyone else found the same? I'm kind of hoping I've just got a duff bottle.

I used the purple one and it was so bad my hair looked like it was wet it was so greasy, I had to bin it!

I'm trying Aussie for a change. I always used to love it so hopeful it's still nice.

I don’t mind it but the smell! It’s so peachy strong!

CherryPieface · 01/05/2025 23:31

I found some in Savers today, thanks for the tip!

ThisHonestCrow · 11/05/2025 21:28

God it's awful. Why on earth have they changed it. Used it for over 10 years. Need to find a new one now

Gundogday · 11/05/2025 21:40

I’ve noticed my hair looks limper as well. Used to last two days, but now on second day looks lifeless.

so what’s the difference in old and new packaging?

Daftapath · 11/05/2025 21:53

I have had the same issues, having used these for years. It’s so annoying. They have obviously changed the formula to make it cheaper to produce. I have allergic reactions to some products so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I don’t react to this new formula.

Clarins did the same with their shower gel that I used to get as a treat for Christmas. It’s now horrible so didn’t waste my money on it this/last year.

Mishmashs · 11/05/2025 21:58

Really interested to read this - I used it for years but haven’t brought myself to buy it in recent months as it has become sooo expensive! I only have a Boots and a Tesco to buy it from.

Edited

The old one is more scarlet red and says 10 weeks colour protection.

The new rubbish greasy one is a darker red bottle and says intense colour up to 40 washes, and the conditioner says colour shielding rather than protecting.

What have they done to Elvive?!
sundaybloodysunday12 · 12/05/2025 12:40

Yes! I thought i hadn’t rinsed properly the first time. But it’s happened twice now and I was thinking the exact same thing. It’s awful, I am going to have to wash my hair as soon as I get home today as didn’t have time to rewash this morning

Womenofacertainage · 12/05/2025 12:47

Thank you SO much for posting this! Me and DD have been using this for ages, and her hair has suddenly become very greasy - I put this down to puberty kicking off. Mine isn't affected as hair is short, and washed every day. I will be looking for another shampoo based on this. Thanks everyone!!

Thank you. I noticed from your photos that the gold circle is bigger and goes into the wording in the new version, which may be a good quick reference point as well.

Daftapath · 12/05/2025 21:08

The new ones seem to have different shaped lids from the old bottles.

Does anyone know if the other formulas have changed also. I quite like the orange bottled Dream shampoo(lovely smell), and use the dry one when my hair goes through a dry phase. Elvive was my default, everyday, brand.

MadisonAvenue · 12/05/2025 22:17

I’ve used Elvive Extraordinary Clay shampoo and conditioner for years, it’s the only one that really suits my hair and means that I don’t have to wash and dry my thick hair so often and it’s been discontinued.
I managed to get some, overpriced, from Amazon but it’s even more expensive now at around £10 a bottle.

smallstitch · 12/05/2025 22:23

I don’t understand how this happens - when they change the formula they test it on 100’s of people first to check it’s good. Surely those people will have had the same experience and reported back. Very disappointing that they’ve gone ahead with production of it.

FairViewRosie25 · 12/05/2025 22:23

Dove have some great shampoo & conditioner in B&M for £2.25 a bottle each, my hair feels great.

That was superb shampoo, and one of the only ones marketed nowadays for ‘greasy’ (and thick) hair. Now, shampoos are moisturising, volumising, shiney, etc rather than the old categories of ‘dry’, ‘greasy’, and ‘normal’ hair. Prior to having my hair coloured/menopause, which dried my hair out, that was my main shampoo, and I’ve recommended it alot on mn in the past.

NeedWineNow · 13/05/2025 09:12

It is so irritating when this happens. I bought the Elvive Extraordinary Oil shampoo and conditioner when I went away recently (it was the only one I'd used before which I could get in a small 200ml bottle rather than the large 400ml bottles). It was awful, made my hair really heavy and lank. Thankfully I was only away for a week so I put up with it but it went in the bin at the end of week which is annoying as I hate waste and will use something up rather than just throw away. Even my DH tried it and wouldn't use it and he'll use anything.

Can you really return bottles of shampoo and conditioner because you don’t want them?

There's no legal obligation to refund if its due to not liking the product, but some places might depending on who is making the decision (and how much of a pain the customer seems like they will be!)

They may have been focusing on drier frizzier hair and prioritising that over finer/greasy hair types depending on their assessment of their client base. Especially as its for dyed hair which can often be drier from damage.

musicalfrog · 23/05/2025 14:12

Has anyone found a suitable alternative yet? Preferably available in supermarkets. Aussie isn't really cutting it for me.

Gundogday · 23/05/2025 15:12

I was looking at my new packaging - there’s nothing to say there’s been a formula change.

I was wondering what people were using now. I seem to have a habit of using shampoos that then become discontinued. There was an Aussie Pure, I think it was called. Stopped doing it.

I quite like Bedhead, but it’s a little more than I like to spend for my ‘everyday’ shampoo.

NeedWineNow · 23/05/2025 15:17

Just finished the small Elvive Colour shampoo and conditioner, binned the Extraordinary Oil and am going back to Herbal Essences Colour protect which I prefer.
