What have they done to Elvive?!

I've used Elvive Colour Protect shampoo and conditioner for years and they're just right for my hair as well as being inexpensive. It's been harder to come by lately but now back in stock with different packaging. I've used the conditioner twice now and was expecting it to be the same (haven't noticed "new formula" etc on the labelling) but it smells different and has left my hair looking heavy and greasy both times. It feels like there's a silicon film in my hair and it looks awful. It's so annoying. Has anyone else found the same? I'm kind of hoping I've just got a duff bottle.

It was my go to as well! The new formulation smells awful - far too strong. The shampoo is otherwise alright but I’m having similar issues with the conditioner, plus the bizarre new red pigment in it isn’t doing my blonde balayage any favours. I’ve switched to the Dream Lengths range which doesn’t seem to have been reformulated, thank goodness.

Sakura7 · 08/03/2025 15:10

Oh no, not another one! Aussie did this too a couple of years ago too and completely ruined the product.

Queenanne20 · 08/03/2025 15:36

I've used it for years and was horrified to see the price of it had shot up recently. The bottle I used to pay £4 for was £8 in one supermarket! I found it on offer but noticed the different shaped bottle and the different smell. The smell of the shampoo is OK but I haven't tried the conditioner yet. Why on earth do they have to mess with a perfectly good produce. I'll be looking at alternatives from now on.

Seconding this (although brunette). The dream lengths range is still the same fortunately!

OMG, I've just been looking online to order some as it's ridiculously expensive in the shops, and struggle to get a decent size conditioner for less than a tenner. Ended up ordering some Tresemme instead, hopefully it suits my hair

Onlycoffee · 08/03/2025 16:28

Do you have a savers, b&ms, bodycare etc they often have previous versions of products as opposed to Boots or supermarkets. Cheaper as well.

Scrunchcake · 08/03/2025 21:13

Good call @Onlycoffee thanks. At least because the packaging is so different it's easy to spot.

I noticed this too. Not a fan of the new smell, haven't noticed a huge change in my hair yet.

What's a good alternative?

Pollyanna1967 · 16/04/2025 09:48

Reading these posts I have had exactly the same problem with the new Elvive colour shampoo and conditioner. Like others, I have been using these products for years but the last few times that I have washed and conditioned my hair, it has felt really greasy and heavy after blowdrying. I have spoken to the technical team and they are looking into it. Now I just have to return all the bottles that I bought this week as I won't be using again sadly.

LeaveALittleNote · 16/04/2025 22:44

I was just thinking the other day that my hair has been more lank and greasy than usual! It’s at the roots, so must be a shampoo issue for me. I’m using the one in the violet bottle at the moment.

SoScarletItWas · 17/04/2025 06:48

So glad you posted @Scrunchcake - it’s bloody horrible! Definitely noticed the change, especially in the conditioner, which leaves the sticky heaviness that you described.

Will be hitting the Savers to try and find old formula Elvive colour protect.

SoScarletItWas · 19/04/2025 13:30

Can report old formula Elvive Colour is on the shelves at Savers. I got four each of shampoo and conditioner today.

MichaelandKirk · 19/04/2025 13:38

Can you really return bottles of shampoo and conditioner because you don’t want them?

Gloschick · 19/04/2025 14:23

Yes, I've had the same. As if I hadn't rinsed my hair - it feels sticky and heavy. With that and the price rise, I'm going elsewhere.

NotGalinda · 19/04/2025 14:27

I thought this was just me! I use the oil one in a brown bottle and my hair has suddenly become very greasy. Will have to find something new

recommendations for making peri hair look sleek and not dry and fly away (and also not greasy) welcome

Littlesticklebrick · 25/04/2025 06:29

Yes! I’ve always used the colour protecting one! It’s awful now. I’ve had to compare bottles… it now says ‘colour shielding’ this is the one that’s left my hair feeling coated.
You can sometimes find the old original bottle and I’m hoping they’re not phasing that out! 😫

They also added a strong cheap perfume to their unperfumed flexible hold hairspray which I had been buying for decades. I switched brands immediately.

LeaveALittleNote · 25/04/2025 09:24

@Dillanegasms Interesting. I won’t be repurchasing it. Everything I use seems to get reformulated or discontinued!

EmmaStone · 25/04/2025 09:36

Another who's been using this for years. I find the colour protection now isn't as good as it was, although I have to say I do like the new conditioner smell. Really difficult to find decent sized bottles of the conditioner though.

Has anyone else used a different good colour protect shampoo? I use a colour depositing shampoo once a week as my colour, so my in between shampoo does really need to protect it - most other shampoos strip it straight out.

TKRedLemonade · 25/04/2025 22:40

Also agree it’s horrendous now. Tried to switch to Treseme but my hair was dry and frizzy. Desperately need a new one they doesn’t cost the earth as any fancy ones I splurge on get used by family despite warnings.

JenniferBooth · 28/04/2025 17:52

I tried John Frieda Pro Colour Revive shampoo last year and it wasnt too bad
Also had a tube of the Color Wow Colour Security shampoo. Im not a fan of it but used up most of the tube because of what it cost.

CherryPieface · 29/04/2025 19:41

Agree the conditioner is awful. I found some of the old style in a Tesco Express, being sold off for £1. I bought five!

musicalfrog · 29/04/2025 21:25

I'm trying Aussie for a change. I always used to love it so hopeful it's still nice.
