What have they done to Elvive?!

I've used Elvive Colour Protect shampoo and conditioner for years and they're just right for my hair as well as being inexpensive. It's been harder to come by lately but now back in stock with different packaging. I've used the conditioner twice now and was expecting it to be the same (haven't noticed "new formula" etc on the labelling) but it smells different and has left my hair looking heavy and greasy both times. It feels like there's a silicon film in my hair and it looks awful. It's so annoying. Has anyone else found the same? I'm kind of hoping I've just got a duff bottle.

My local Sainsburys has some travel size Elvive Colour Protect shampoo and they could well be the old formula because they have a twirly symbol on the top of the lid instead of the new symbol which is a letter R

Also now having problems with the colour shampoo (red bottle). Awful smell of product and makes my scalp itch. This started with a refill pack. Closer look says it's made in Italy, on front name has changed to Colour Vive. Contacted L'Oréal expecting them to say formulation has changed. No, have lengthy questionnaire to complete and email back to them. Nothing on pack says formulation has changed. At hairdresser on Friday so will see if she knows anything

JenniferBooth · 11/08/2025 20:14

Its the smell of the new formula i cant get used to i can still smell it strongly the next day if ive used it the night before

ManyManyBiscuits · 11/08/2025 20:38

i feel your pain OP and others.

L’Oréal also changed the orange Extraordinary Oil formula so it didn’t contain Argan oil any more. I’d used it for about 5 years :-(

I managed to find a replacement with Natural World Argan Oil conditioner but now the fuckers have discontinued that too. I found three bottles on eBay a while back but have just used the last of it.

have tried out:
Shea Moisture curl conditioner - absolutely not, too claggy.

OGX keratin and argan oil - expensive and makes hair one big fluffy pouf

Umberto Gianni - Thirsty Curls - maybe a bit better but still pricy and not as good as the OG. And I can’t get it in local Tesco.

AnonAnonmystery · 11/08/2025 22:16

Glad I found this thread, thought I was going mad. Tip for the shampoo - wash your hair twice, it makes a big different then condition.
i miss the old smell though.

TheRobinDelaney · 16/08/2025 15:07

It’s amazing to find this thread. The new formula is terrible! Makes my scalp itch, and the scent is strong, cheap and disgusting. And also leaves an oily, greasy look. I never had greasy hair in my entire life.
So I tried the Herbal Essence Aloe Vera. Not amazing but okay. Today I tried the pink rose scented Herbal Essence. My hair’s still wet, so not sure how it turned out…
Disappointing that L’Oreal changed their formula just to lower their costs and without taking us regular customers into consideration…

LadyAvgeek · 17/08/2025 09:37

An update. L'Oreal customer service sent me a questionnaire asking which product, problems experienced, medication I'm on, etc. Hairdresser on Friday said my crown was red, but no sign of broken/flaky skin or "crawly things". Now wrapped half full Colour Vive refill bag in zip top plastic bag because smell is awful. It's permeated refill bag. Also whilst doing questionnaire I was holding bag and the smell was on my hands despite cap being on firmly and no leakages. Bought John Frieda Volume to try, no adverse reaction and none to Revlon product used by hairdresser. Picture here is offending bag, glad it's not smelly vision!

AnonAnonmystery · 17/08/2025 10:50

Has anyone on here found a shampoo and conditioner that protects the colour as an alternative to the red Elvive one? My scalp has also been scaly at times but didn’t link it to the shampoo. But now I know!

@LadyAvgeek i mixed some coconut oil and rosemary oil on scalp. It soothed and moisturised it plus it’s good for hair growth x

Silverbirchleaf · 17/08/2025 11:00

I’ve tried three shampoos so far. I like the Monday one, but my hair was due for a colour do can’t really comment on the colour aspect.

The second one I used was the Coconut oil colour one. Not bad, but made the bath slippery when I washed my hair in the bath.

Just tried the Herbal Essence Ignite one. Only used it yesterday. Seems okay so far.

LadyAvgeek · 17/08/2025 12:00

@AnonAnonmystery thanks for suggesting. Crown doesn't itch but could always do with thicker hair. Was tempted by Plantur 39 but price and reviews put me off. Pantene perfect volume mousse good so may look at shampoo

I’m trying Herbal Essence ROSE (. Used it once yesterday and my hair feels and looks okay. Hopefully it will continue working out well.
I also wrote L’Oreál a complaint on their international Facebook page. No response yet.

I hope someone on here works for L'Oréal or have friends / family there and can send them the link to this thread.

They have to return the old formula.

I remember a few years back Liz Earle made some changes to Cleans& Polish. Negative feedback from customers and they returned it pronto, with apology and explanation. This is what I call a decent brand. L'Oréal should learn from them.

AnonAnonmystery · 17/08/2025 18:50

I’m am suprised this disaster happened as usually there will be a wide testing panels of independent product users who will test and give feedback but something awfully wrong went on with Elvive.

LadyAvgeek · 18/08/2025 07:33

Am also surprised and disappointed that they don't appear to have done adequate testing. P&G did same years ago with Persil wash tabs. No consultation with skin condition support groups until many complaints. Non-bio ones solved problem and their blushes. Think L'Oréal will ask for product return, if so they can pay for postage

nickyschof · 18/08/2025 09:10

Both Aldi and Lidl have their own knock
offs of this range. They may be copying the old formulations.

LadyAvgeek · 26/08/2025 22:17

Nothing further from L'Oréal since I did questionnaire. Reviews on Boots website make interesting reading. Past 3-4 months they're 1 star with complaints about changed formulation and awful smell. This is for Colour Protect shampoo, have not looked at any others

JenniferBooth · 27/08/2025 00:25

My niece loves the new scent...........i cant stand it

AnonAnonmystery · 27/08/2025 09:41

Even my partner has noticed the change in smell
amd hates it ( as he will occasionally use my stuff if his runs out). Same complaint, horrible strong smell!

BettyBobble · 27/08/2025 09:56

I used it from r years and then tried the pantene colour protect shampoo and conditioner on a whim and I've not looked back. Maybe see if you get on with that. It's smells lush and leaves my hair looking glossy

Too bad I can’t use Pantene. Gives me a rash too.
Has anyone found an alternative except Herbal Essence Rose that is just so so and not great?

And still L’Oreal is ignoring all the critique… Why? Isn’t the revenue from their hair products significant? Why do they ignore the customer complaints?

Im currently using the Herbal Essences Ignite My Colour Rose Extract and agree its ok but not great. Still havent found a good permanant replacement for Elvive

LadyAvgeek · 03/09/2025 10:26

Still nothing from L'Oréal so here's personal update. Tried Aldi red (colour) shampoo. Ended up with straw after one use. Used some Nuxe oil as conditioner and left in overnight. Now ordered John Frieda volume shampoo, conditioner and mousse on offer at Boots. Given up colour protection for thicker hair

LadyAvgeek · 29/09/2025 23:24

Well, been away on holiday and still nothing from L'Oréal. Sun has bleached my hair so no need for colour shampoo at moment, lol! Rather than keep saying nothing to report, I will only come back when they decide to respond....

JenniferBooth · 29/09/2025 23:32

Ive tried the Tigi Bed Head Colour Goddess and its not bad. I love the caramel smell. Ive also managed to get a bottle of OGX Colour Retention shampoo from a large Tesco Extra in another town. So that is the next one i shall try.
