Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Yorkshire.

Vega trainers. Straight leg jeans. Long puffer coats that look like sleeping bags. Uniqlo cross body bag.

Utterly depressing.

ValentineValentineV · 15/02/2025 14:38

Long black puffa coat, leggings, longish white socks, trainers or small Ugg boot things, a truly awful look.

Completelyjo · 15/02/2025 14:39

I can’t say I’ve seen anyone wearing vejas in years.

GutsyGertrude · 15/02/2025 14:46

Actually no! I see little cliques wearing similar things. There are two mums who are friends and always wear athleisure for example. There are some others who all wear long puffy coats, jeans and Adidas gazelles or sambas. But in general there is a big variety.

I'm in East Berks.

YourSparklySeal · 15/02/2025 14:47

I would say it’s reasonably varied where I am but if there was a predominant uniform it would be a wide leg trouser (including jeans), t-shirt, converse or new balance, and a long puffer or oversized fleece.

Are the long white socks worn over the leggings? I don’t think I’ve seen that look before.

This is interesting! They’re very popular here. Can I ask where you live?

Yes to roughly shin length.

This is nice. I think I need to introduce some variety to my everyday wardrobe, but I honestly wouldn’t know where to start!

Pretty varied where I’m from (NW)

Leggings, trainers, fleece or long puffer
Work/office wear
Jeans, jumper, warm coat

I haven’t noticed a swarm of Vejas either.

Why are people saying it’s depressing what other people are wearing? Why does it matter?

Gosh. I didn’t start this thread to be critical, but I have to agree with you - that does sound like quite the look.

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

cheezncrackers · 15/02/2025 14:59

Well, it's February and it's cold, so it's not that surprising to see lots of people in puffa coats! Round where I live though, I would say that no, there isn't a uniform. Lots of athleisure wear, lots of smartish jeans/trousers, lots of nice coats of various types, but at this time of year yes, a lot are puffa style, lots of smart trainers, but not specifically any one brand, same with leather bags.

Surprisingly few puffer jackets around here! And almost no athleisure at all.

I am going to get some non-Veja knockaround trainers to regain my sense of individuality. 😁

Yeah the mums around here all wear big long winter jackets. That's a given, but the one I really hate, is the mid length coats with no sleeves. 🤮

wizzywig · 15/02/2025 15:07

2 looks depending on which side of the village you live in. Wealthier side: sleeveless puffa coat, Breton jumper, little dog that you are taking for a walk, coffee not in a Stanley cup,

Less wealthy side: Stanley cup, leggings with the white socks, hair tied up, eyebrows microbladed and lips filled. Or leggings you can see the knickers through, hoodie, top bun

Thulpelly · 15/02/2025 15:09

Dryrobes.

The 2nd one is me 🙈🤣🤣🤣

Mulberry bags at a playgroup? That sounds insane. I'm south London and there's none of that here!

VaccineSticker · 15/02/2025 15:13

They are called trends for a reason. Many people like to follow trends. There is no right or wrong in following them or not.
