Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

I wear a gorgeous per una coat, straight leg jeans and boots with a heel, black cross over bag. Gold hooped earrings, lippy on and hair brushed. I'm a Glam-ma not a Mummy tho

SlowSloths · 15/02/2025 15:16

I'm in a leggings, white socks, New Balance trainers/crocs area. Teamed with some form of hoodie (White Fox or Represent) which is usually worn in place of a coat when its pouring down with rain. And they all complain they're soaked and cold.

2 looks depending on which side of the village you live in. Wealthier side: sleeveless puffa coat, Breton jumper, little dog that you are taking for a walk, coffee not in a Stanley cup,

Less wealthy side: Stanley cup, leggings with the white socks, hair tied up, eyebrows microbladed and lips filled. Or leggings you can see the knickers through, hoodie, top bun

Exactly this

BrownieBlondie01 · 15/02/2025 15:18

I feel like I'm reading almost every combination of clothes here 🤣

Like...a baggy jumper and jeans in the winter, that's just a totally standard clothing combo isn't it? Could that really be classed as a trend/uniform?

Some of them - like the long socks over leggings look and the long puffa jackets - are obvious trends. But some of them are just bog standard ways of wearing clothes, surely?

DonningMyHardHat · 15/02/2025 15:18

So bloody glad my kids go to a rural school 😂
It’s mostly a sensible waterproof coat (possibly a dry robe if you’re very fancy), jodhpurs or leggings, and wellies here!

DappledThings · 15/02/2025 15:19

Don't think so. Not noticed any but I don't take much notice of what other people are wearing and I've never heard of Vejas so if everyone is wearing them I wouldn't know.

Just jeans and jumpers really. Ordinary clothes.

The 2nd one is me 🙈🤣🤣🤣

Give us a cheeky wink if you pass me on the school run babes!

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/02/2025 15:23

Reasonably varied where we are, but a few standout styles. There's athleisure with white sports socks pulled up and those off white new balance trainers that look the ones people used to keep in the shed to for dog walks in the 90s, plus long puffy coat.

There's dungarees (over sized denim or Lucy & Yak) and fluffy jumpers often with chunky boots or short UGGS and a parka.

Then there's jeans (straight or skinny) and oversized hoodies / jumpers with boots or Vejas or Sambas or Converse. Either long puffy coat or parka.

In summer I expect to see (and wear) more voluminous shirt dresses with Vejas or leather flip flops.

I am any of the 3 depending what day it is, with the exception of the god awful NB trainers.

Pretty middle class affluent place.

Mulberry bags at a playgroup? That sounds insane. I'm south London and there's none of that here!

Mulberry bags everywhere. It appears to be the standard everyday bag. I’m in Wimbledon, whereabouts are you?

I swear, there was same sort of post couple of months ago, I believe same location.
Very varied where I live!

Yes! Something that looks like its been washed 1000 times but at the same time very stylish and, on closer inspection, very expensive.

East London ))

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Sounds nice. I'm gonna guess Hebden Bridge?

Bluebellwood129 · 15/02/2025 15:27

Very rare to see Vejas or Mulberry bags here anymore but lots of designer trainers and bags

I used to live in Dalston and I can picture exactly what you mean. 🙂

There's an equestrian theme going on at my school at the moment, only one parent actually owns horses.

There's one dad who turns up in shorts and a vest no matter the weather, it was -2°c yesterday morning and there he was in his cargo shorts and Boyzone vest.

tappitytaptap · 15/02/2025 15:32

Ath leisure and straight leg jeans here. Lots of dungarees (I truly hate this). I have mulberry and prada handbags and get 'looks' in the playground- middle class but very green/eco part of Yorkshire.

Gosh. I didn’t start this thread to be critical, but I have to agree with you - that does sound like quite the look.

I'm in the North East and the sports socks over leggings is quite a popular look at the moment. I never thought I'd go for it but it's particularly comfortable, is practical for soft play etc, and keeps my ankles warm!

Imonmyway · 15/02/2025 15:32

Ireland
Leggings, white socks, new balance shoes and a fleece - possibly 4th arq, dunnes or the one oneills does. And yes to lots of puffa coats

buybuysellsell · 15/02/2025 15:32

Where I live it's Sweaty Betty leggings with sports socks over the top. Dark green puffa coats are all the rage too. I'm in the south east.

SE London and every Mum at school wears gym clothes! Trainers, leggings and hoody or sweatshirt.

Packingcube · 15/02/2025 15:39

Interesting!
I haven't really noticed much of a trend at the play groups I've been to a lot wear dresses tights boots but I wouldn't say that's a particular mum uniform just winter clothing.

Mumofyellows · 15/02/2025 15:40

Loads of Veja trainers down here!
