Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

I feel like plain black or white converse are just classic though? I’ve always had a pair knocking about since I was in my early teens (20 years ago) and although they seem to randomly ‘trendy’ every few years then die out a bit I still feel like you’ll always see them about and they look nice, inoffensive and go with everything.

Yeah I don’t think converse have ever really been in fashion, they’ve just been a staple for decades.

I've been preoccupied by this thread, so looked closely during this morning's wet school run.

Our area is on the edge of country/urban. Quite deprived, if you're earning £40k you'd be considered well off. We've seen an influx of people from more expensive/fashionable towns since COVID.

So - there's no one uniform!

Lots of different raincoats, dry robes, walking jackets, puffas.

Wellies, sketchers, own brand converse, uggs (own brand and genuine), walking shoes, boots. No smarter trainers or shoes - but there would be on a drier day.

Lots of cheapish work trousers (7/8 length or full length wide legged). Various leggings (black, sporty, patterned etc). An odd pair of jeans or coloured trousers.

Almost nothing is branded. No maggot puffas (unlike the affluent area we visited in half term).

of course I have a dry robe. So do my kids. They're amazing and worth every penny. It's not a fashion statement, it's a basic clothing.

I have no intention to try wild swimming ever 😂

It's definitely a statement! Dry robes aren't coats, they're for wearing after swimming. It's like wearing your dressing gown outside because it keeps you warm. Technically it works, but it doesn't mean that's its purpose.

I hope you don't wear them with uggs otherwise you're in danger of being photographed and added to the dry robe wankers Facebook page 😱

@FedUpandEatingChocolate i too have been looking everywhere!

Great update… so interesting. I love the variation in that area and the lack of ‘sheep following’.

Lots of Canada Goose coat wearing.

Microbantime · 01/03/2025 16:21

I’d say 3/4 ankle grazer jeans or trousers with some new balance trainers or leggings and trainers, sometimes with white socks too. Tops wise would be a blazer, cardigan sort of combo. In winter Barbour jackets. Warm summer weather is definitely Boden style with dresses and white trainers and a denim jacket.

Often accompanied by a big handful of keys and an oversized Range Rover that they can only drive forwards which is evident at pick up when they can’t reverse or park so sit on the double yellow lines but that’s a whole other thread.

I'm a teacher and I wouldn't know who is wearing a £1.5k bag or inconspicuous brands. Everyone just seems in such a rush at pick up/drop offs, and there isn't a homogenous outfit that anyone is wearing. I don't care what is 'in' or how well put together anyone is, I'm delighted if everyone gets into school on time.
I'm amazed at how clued in some posters are with what is current and what was September 2023. Do people really care that much?

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 02/03/2025 17:18

Of course some people do, @argyllherewecome, in the same way that some people really care who is doing well in the Champions’ League, or who was shortlisted for last year’s Booker Prize, or who won the 13.20 at Cheltenham.

Sub catagory -eastern European mums.
They seem to wear whatever was fashionable 2000-2010!

It's a bit sad really, sneering and looking down your nose at someone because "they think they look stylish in X that was 'in' five years ago". Who really cares? People who think like that must have a pretty shitty life if that sort of thing gets you worked up.
