Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Exactly this

Where do you fit if you wear the leggings with the Breton jumper!?

I wear a gorgeous per una coat, straight leg jeans and boots with a heel, black cross over bag. Gold hooped earrings, lippy on and hair brushed. I'm a Glam-ma not a Mummy tho

Same! (Not until June tho when baby is due)

Littleguggi · 15/02/2025 16:53

I would say mums in my area generally fall into 3 categories:

Gym wear, long white socks, chunky trainers probably new balance
Work wear, long wool coat, heels or pumps
Casual jeans/ wide legs, short puffer jacket, chunky boots

I can be all 3 depending on what sort of day I am having! I am also guilty of wearing trainer socks and showing my ankles which is apparently 'out' 🙄

you can be 90 years old and still look good in a pair of converse. They'll never die

They are bad for your feel as there is no arch support. They look naff.

Are the long white socks worn over the leggings? I don’t think I’ve seen that look before.

It’s the same where I am, SE London/ Kent borders and yes, I’ve clocked socks over leggings is the majority here. Moved here a couple of years ago from closer in to London and will not be converting to the local vernacular.

Completely agree. Grown adults in them just look try hard to me, they look unsupportive and flimsy. They looked good in the 80s on teenagers, had their moment when they were revived and 'retro.' Now they just look naff.

Converse aren't particularly on trend so aren't everywhere like gazelles and sambas but I don't recoil when someone wears them.

I don't recoil, just don't like the look.

Yes white sports socks.

mathanxiety · 15/02/2025 16:59

Expensive leggings, hoodies, long, down-filled or heavily fleece-lined windproof coats, no visible bags, beanies or bobble hats, thermal gloves, ski gaiters, very sturdy weatherproof boots (in the frigid Northern midwest US). Basically athleisure with winter grade outerwear.

Summer means Bermuda shorts, butt ugly Keen sandals or sneakers/ slip-on canvas loafers/ flip flops, sport/athleisure tops, shoulder length bleached hair tied back (for white women). Pedicures de rigeur as life is lived with toes showing.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:00

well you think they look naff where's I wouldn't even think anything but we all have different tastes.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 15/02/2025 17:01

So much Converse slander on this thread! 🤣

I used to LOVE them. I’ve got loads. Stopped wearing them a few years ago, but I’ve no idea why. I still think they look nice and have always thought of them as timeless/ageless shoes. Same way I feel about DMs.

One things i've noticed in recent months is beanie hats that look plonked on Brian Harvey style. don't like it

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:02

@ForZanyAquaViewer agree I would put them with DMs

Edited

That is what I think too.

Yes white sports socks.

This has been a look for at least two years where I live but it's only teens and early twenties who do it. You wouldn't see anyone over 23 looking like that.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:03

butt ugly Keen sandals

😆

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:04

@mathanxiety yes terms started in years ago but it's infected some older peeps.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:05

Yes I have seen late 30s/pushing 40s with that look.

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 15/02/2025 17:06

Same here. Universal mum uniform is black leggings (with anatomical bum detail), cropped puffa, white hi-top trainers.
Will nobody think of the property prices😖!

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 17:07

The Times had an article about white socks and leggings on adult woman ages ok
