Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

Brighton?

New balance neutral trainers
leggings/straight leg mid rise jeans/flared leggings
Adanola or similar oversized hoodie
long puffa coat

Essex!

holidayaway · 15/02/2025 16:20

No.

MammaTo · 15/02/2025 16:20

It depends what side of our town you go to. The more affluent side is probably cropped jeans with gazelles/chunky boots and a bag jumper with long padded coat and beanie hat. Other sides it’s very Adanola with leggings and new balance trainers.

InMyMNEra · 15/02/2025 16:21

Off topic, but my teen dd wears New Balance trainers. I think they are horrendous looking.

I still see lots of mums and women of all ages (bar teens) in Vejas. Wasn’t Kate Middleton wearing them in a very recent picture?

I'm of an age where I don't even follow fashion let alone a 'mum uniform', but then I've always worn what I feel most comfortable wearing.

I live in the south east and it seems across the board that gym leggings are the in thing, patterned, plain no set colour way, top half varies from sweatshirt to those comfy looking fleece tops.

Peekingovertheparapet · 15/02/2025 16:23

Sweaty betty leggings here, or straight leg jeans. There is a very obvious difference at the morning drop off between who is wfh/not working and who is going into the office on any given day.

evilharpy · 15/02/2025 16:24

N Ireland

Black leggings, sweatshirt (usually White Fox), uggs, sleeveless hooded midi length puffer coat. Haven't noticed what bags are popular.

I don't understand the sleeveless puffer coats. If I'm cold enough for a coat I would need it to have sleeves.

Most of these styles seem ‘on trend’ and practical. We have all of them here. I’m in a mostly, but not exclusively, middle class area in Kent. People find their tribe don’t they? Clothes have always expressive, it doesn’t seem unusual.

Seriously, you haven't seen this? It started with teens/younger women a couple of years ago and has filtered through to all ages. Also wearing visible socks with cropped jeans/trousers rather than trainer liners, which I quite like.

I like (and wear) the visible (generally very colourful) socks with cropped jeans look. But, no, I’ve honestly not come across mums in shin length white socks over leggings. I’ve possibly seen it on teens, but I don’t tend to notice what they’re wearing. I’ll look out for it, though.

I see a lot of leggings, white socks pulled up, Newbalance trainers and dry robe or equivalent padded jacket. Hair scraped back. I don’t think it is a good look but each to their own if that’s what people are comfortable in.

Allihavetodoisdream · 15/02/2025 16:27

Stutterheim/Rains rubberised raincoat.
Or oversized wool/tweed coat from Toast or similar.
Blundstone boots/lace up ankle boots.
Carrot leg jeans, vintage Levi’s, wide leg jeans, cropped wide leg trousers.
Cashmere or wool jumper.
New Yorker or Daunt tote bag.

Nevergonnamoveagain · 15/02/2025 16:27

Working class north west area.
A bit of a mix which is nice really.
You get the mums in the dryrobes/blakely/whitefox (you can always depend on them to have the latest trendy brand)
Then you have the leggings and long top and trainers (basically mums like me who are tired and no energy or money to follow trends)

There's a group who always wear long gilets and uggs.
The ones in work clothes.
The ones in leggings tunics and ballerina pumps.

To me they all look fine apart from the tunics and ballerinas but I'm guessing they're also a bit like me, mums too tired and lost their way a bit so stick to something cosy and familiar

I must try a bit harder honestly, I've been in leggings so long I no longer know what will suit me.

Lorelaigilmore88 · 15/02/2025 16:27

Very varied where i am from, but there is one clique that goes running together after drop off and they all wear pretty much identical brightly coloured leisure wear leggings and tops and trainers :) i think its quite nice though, i like bright colours :)

Wow - I went out yesterday in a rush with ankle length jeans and fair isle socks on show; I felt a right skank but hey it's a thing! I'm a trendsetter!! But I had to Google 'Veja' (the shame) so I'm still on a steep learning curve 😂

I see it every day, too, and I also agree it’s not a good look. I would feel like a slob if I went out like that.
Then again, I’m older (40+) so feel I need to make more of an effort. It’s easier to carry that look off when you have youth on your side.

There's an equestrian theme going on at my school at the moment, only one parent actually owns horses.

There's one dad who turns up in shorts and a vest no matter the weather, it was -2°c yesterday morning and there he was in his cargo shorts and Boyzone vest.

never heard boyzone vest! lol I call them rab c nessbit vests

Oh no, this is me in leggings, tubics and flats and i am north west 🤦‍♀️ i probably need to shake it up a bit :)

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 16:29

SW London & it's quite mixed. Lots of adidas trainers, a few do the white sock & legging thing which i dislike.

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 16:30

yes to puffer coats - but most of the non mums and dads and teens have these because they are practical.

So many have that uniqlo bag

wooliegloves · 15/02/2025 16:31

don't really see Vejas anymore

Yes to roughly shin length.

Yes, looks a new thing. Reminds me of the early 90s, where it should stay.

I'm very close to you and I'm at the stage where my DC are at Uni but have noticed most of the Mum's in our street look very well put together on the school run and heading to local groups. Lots of Mulberry bags and cashmere.
Most also have 'help' even when not working too.
What's a Glam-ma @1983Louise?

I wear a lot of cashmere and we do have help. So, yes to most of this.

If anyone ever described me as well put together, I’d be extremely surprised, though. Delighted, obviously. But definitely surprised. 😆

Im not sure we have a Mum uniform here (south Norfolk) but we definitely have a “mid 40s-50s woman” uniform which I admit I’m definitely part of 😬🙈😂 Mainly Seasalt or White Stuff everything, Radley or Coach bag, brown sturdy leather farm type boots or New Balance trainers, big colourful scarf. Quilted khaki jacket of some sort. See it all the time.
