Is there a ‘mum uniform’ where you live?

I was at a play group the other day and noticed that, despite being of varying ages (although mostly 30’s, I’d guess), races and sizes, the mums (including me) were mostly wearing slightly battered Vejas, straight cut jeans, baggy jumpers and some sort of tote (predominantly Mulberry). It’s apparently the uniform in this particular SW London suburb.

Is there a mum ‘uniform’ where you live? If so, what is it?

Chunky trainers, leggings, hoodies and knee length puffer gilets (apparently nobody gets cold arms round this way).

Im not surprised its pretty basic though. I dont have kids but see the mums congregating around the school gates when I walk the dogs in the morning and TBH Ive just chucked on thermal leggings, oversized sweatshirt and a puffer coat coz Im not 'officially' up.
I assume alot of people are the same!

AliceMcK · 15/02/2025 15:41

No, there is a massive mix of classes, backgrounds of families around here. I do tend to see a lot of dryrobe wearing but wouldn’t say it’s a mums uniform.

Jennifershuffles · 15/02/2025 15:27

Sounds nice. I'm gonna guess Hebden Bridge?

I was going to suggest the same!

Wisenotboring · 15/02/2025 15:42

Lots of these combinations sound quite practical. Comfortable, easy to pull on, non-iron and warm!

Cakeandcheeseforever · 15/02/2025 15:43

I wear whatever I can pull on fastest. Usually leggings or jeggings plus a jumper or t-shirt, then a warm coat over the top. Most mums seem to wear the same from what I see in the blur of the school run.

Horses7 · 15/02/2025 15:45

My kids told me months ago that white shin length socks are the only ones to wear … I still don’t but I do have a very long puffa coat with hood - it’s wonderful and surprisingly slimming.

Newposter180 · 15/02/2025 15:50

Crocs 😱
I’m Edinburgh and have never ever seen a sleeveless puffer coat. Maybe everyone needs sleeves for the cold here.
Big mix where I am - some of the veja/mom jeans look; others far more arty and quirky. Mostly casual though. I usually have a wool coat and leather boots rather than puffer/trainers and tend to be the smartest.

CurbsideProphet · 15/02/2025 15:54

I have a toddler and on my days off at soft play/ toddler swimming/ playgroup type things everyone wears joggers / leggings / jumper / big coat. Maybe more scope to mix things up in spring/ summer...

Londonmummy66 · 15/02/2025 16:00

Dryrobes, Baggy cashmere rollnecks in navy camel or pink, hiking boots, 7/8 length Me&Em side stripe trousers, handknitted fairisle jumpers (ideally bought when on holiday in Scotland). Good quality leather totes without an obvious logo except when dog walking when its a uniqlo cross body to hold treats, a roll of poo bags and keys.

Schoolrunstyle88 · 15/02/2025 16:01

There’s a lot of semi transparent leggings with white socks and knock-off crocs round this way. Nightwear also seems to be acceptable. There are at least 2 mums that I have never seen wearing clothes, only pyjamas and dressing gowns!

VivaLaSpag · 15/02/2025 16:03

@somewhereinsuburbia My money is on either Stoke Newington or Bristol 😆

Veja’s still common in SE London

DonningMyHardHat · 15/02/2025 15:18

So bloody glad my kids go to a rural school 😂
It’s mostly a sensible waterproof coat (possibly a dry robe if you’re very fancy), jodhpurs or leggings, and wellies here!

Agree, same here. No standard uniform but lots of schoffel, wellies with jeans or leggings. Some dubarrys or occasionally some fairfax and favour reginas

some in more formal office wear.

Delphigirl · 15/02/2025 16:05

somewhereinsuburbia · 15/02/2025 14:58

Real wool jumpers, tan brogues or those leather gnome like shoes, some form of legging or flowing skirt (depending on whether mum is cycling or not), ancient leather bag probably bought in India or Morocco, walking windproof anorak.
Guess where I live?

North oxford?

27Maisie27 · 15/02/2025 16:06

No uniform here, or not that I’ve noticed. I drop the kids off and go straight to work. So smart trousers, boots, long woollen jacket for me. Others go from the school to the gym so are dressed for that.

ValentineValentineV · 15/02/2025 14:38

Long black puffa coat, leggings, longish white socks, trainers or small Ugg boot things, a truly awful look.

I was wearing this today minus the longish white socks 😆 It’s just so comfortable and warm!

Ours seems to be leggings, jumpers and socks and trainers (usually New Balances) but I do mostly frequent soft plays active places at the moment! SE.

Gosh. I didn’t start this thread to be critical, but I have to agree with you - that does sound like quite the look.

Seriously, you haven't seen this? It started with teens/younger women a couple of years ago and has filtered through to all ages. Also wearing visible socks with cropped jeans/trousers rather than trainer liners, which I quite like.

Trebormints74 · 15/02/2025 16:11

Stroud?
Glastonbury?

Completelyjo · 15/02/2025 14:39

I can’t say I’ve seen anyone wearing vejas in years.

Me neither, we are in North London. Haven’t seen many Mulberry bags for ages either, apart from one lady in her late 40s, but she wears full formal office attire and heels. Apart from that there no heels at all at nursery drop off.

Sorry that was in reply to @somewhereinsuburbia

MumCanIHaveASnackPlease · 15/02/2025 16:15

Glasgow here and some of these are hilarious to me. If you turned up to the mum group with a mulberry bag you’d be considered a snob and likely avoided 🤣🤣

Lots of Adanola but the mom jeans, stripy jumper and samba crew is most prominent.

Mulberry bags everywhere. It appears to be the standard everyday bag. I’m in Wimbledon, whereabouts are you?

I'm very close to you and I'm at the stage where my DC are at Uni but have noticed most of the Mum's in our street look very well put together on the school run and heading to local groups. Lots of Mulberry bags and cashmere.
Most also have 'help' even when not working too.
What's a Glam-ma @1983Louise?

Lollipoplol97 · 15/02/2025 16:17

It's either them ticktok leggings that part the arse cheeks and go so far up you can see everything going on🤣🤣 or the sleeping bag coats. Me I'm pregnant with my third and a 7 months old. so it's probably a pair of jogging bottoms that are like 3 days old and a jumper with a stain poo? Wee? Baby sick? Who knows 🤣 and can't remember the last time I ran a brush through my hair

Airbrhdhdh · 15/02/2025 16:17

Countryside, abroad. No, not at all, beyond insulated boots and long puffers (much colder than the UK).

Also not for the kids at school. No uniform, area mixed and have not seen any designer labels in school. Complete range of things work to school.
