I am in such a terrible state, I've nothing nice t wear, I've been buying fast fashion in horrible material and nothing goes together 😔.
Looking to you gorgeous lot for inspiration for Spring. I'm thinking of buying a camel wool coat in the sales, and really having a glow up....but where to start?!

Thanks Mewkins. It’s the fabric I’m struggling with. Linen is too thick, as is double gauze. Imagine the thinnest cotton, that’s been washed for years until it’s as soft as spiderwebs. It’s not something I’d want to risk buying online, but am keeping my eyes open.

Yes I know what you mean. I have a dress like it but couldn't say what weight the cotton is. Dalston Mills is rather brilliant if you've not ordered from them before and all of their fabric has the weight included so you may be able to sort of guess.

I have this (which will become a top soon) and it is a lovely lightweight cotton so maybe something around 75gsm would work.

Dobby is a good call. Thank you.

I’ve got my day wardrobe sorted for holiday clothes tbf - Arket shorts and vests, with Marks thin cotton beach shirts that I’ve chopped and hemmed the sleeves on.

I can’t find any lovely thin cotton or I’d certainly be making a couple of dresses. The kind that Indian hippy dresses used to be made of is what I want, if that makes sense to anyone!

I know exactly the fabric you mean, I had a beautiful ivory skirt was like a fine cotton lawn so soft & comfortable hope you find some.

I'm going to try and not buy anything new this year. Some of my favourite bits from last summer, all look nice with sandals or trainers and a denim/leather jacket.

I got some smiley face jeans from Hollister last spring (actually got them really cheap from Tkmaxx) And I really like the heart print ones, also Tkmaxx.

@YetAgainAgain I want them to wear with my barrel leg and baggy jeans and joggers, just ankle grazing length. This kind of thing (see pic attached, takem from instagram)

I wear mine like this, but also love them with oversized dresses. God I can’t wait for the weather to warm up!

A camper van … and only two tea shirts 😂 🥹

I eyeing up Birkenstock clogs for this spring too!

Astronaut79 · 22/02/2025 19:39

I want a rain jacket that doesn't look like a rain jacket.
Got a city break in a warm county coming up, but not warm enough in April not to take a coat.

Wondering about a trench, but I wonder whether camel/ beige and pale skin and blonde (fake) will wash me out.

I have bought primark wide leg trousers which are long enough for an over 5'8 person. I can't bring myself to wear wide jeans again, but I can do trousers.

HansHolbein · 22/02/2025 19:46

I've lost 4st (still have some more to go) so I am really excited about buying some new clothes in the next few weeks. I'm thinking some mum jeans & a few nice shirts. Not sure about shoes yet. Mary-Jane's seem to be coming back?

PearlLemur · 22/02/2025 20:04

I'm not buying anything,I have enough clothes already,I don't need anymore

Blazers with gold buttons are doing the rounds again. Good with jeans and loafers or trainers. Just dug mine out today and wore it with comfy jeans and pair of Russell and Bromley tan tassel loafers and I felt ok shopping in Flannels (the Dior lady gave me free samples). I may invest in other one with different lapels. Although the weather was nice today, not quite warm enough for the frocks yet.

Well thanks for the replies and questions.

I'm an autumn so can pull off camel, and as an absolute freezer I could definitely wear the coat for a few months yet.

My youngest DC has started full time school and I'm in a new job where I don't have to wear a uniform, so feel like I'm entering a new phase, I've been in skinnies and trainers at the park, or scrubs at work, for so many years I don't know where to start!

I'm thinking of basing the whole lot on camels and beige, then having a few accent colours, I've had my colours done and I'm armed with a load of swatch samples 😁

What id really love is a personal shopper and a huge budget, but I have neither at the moment 😕

Fraser and John Lewis offer a free personal shopper service, if local to you, you could try that?

I make my own clothes. I have lots, but have a few dresses and another few tops planned. I am currently resisting buying some new trainers in red. Apparenty red will be big this spring and summer. I may also make myself some red wide leg trousers. I don’t need another pair of trainers. I bought two gorgeous pairs of Nike Cortez in blue, with a yellow swish and in green, with a pink swish from last year. So I will continue to try to resist the gorgeous red ones .

Beesandhoney123 · 22/02/2025 23:20

Just bought some Adidas gazelles in a fab spring colour

Wide leg low rise dark jeans and light blue cotton cargos.
White, pink, pake blue cap sleeve t shirts, a military blazer and a very fitted gilet with a hood- no faux fur.

Pastel plain underwear. Matching sets.

Swap out winter for spring/ summer handbag.

Just had my hair cut into choppy french bob which so far 5 random strangers have stopped me to tell me how elegant and chic it looks:) did have uber long hair before. Feel very not me.

Some pastel matt eyeshadow.

Swapped winter perfume for spring

Pale pink nail narnish. Wear red in the winter.

That should be it for now:)

Ritzybitzy · 23/02/2025 00:15

Vinted is your friend.

Thomasina79 · 23/02/2025 08:13

I’ve bought the marks trench coat in black and I love it. It is definitely waterproof too, as tested the other day!

DaphneduM · 23/02/2025 09:31

I realised I needed to get more up to date shapes of jeans. Despite the Mumsnet debate about skinnies still being worn, I have now got used to wider leg during the winter - I bought M and S wide leg cords and they're so comfortable and stylish. So I've been embracing that style and also barrel legs. I have bought wide leg white, cream, pink, pale green, black and camo jeans. Grey very high waisted mom jeans, pale blue denim straight legs and pale sage barrel legs. The straight legs were Vinted, the rest from John Lewis, T K Maxx and M and S.

For tops I have shopped at Vinted - about half a dozen varied pure silk shirts and tops to go with the above jeans. Knitwear has been Primark - a pale lemon jumper and cotton knit striped tank. Merino wool tank and two crochet cotton jumpers are on their way from T K Maxx. Phew, sounds a lot, but it's nice to update my wardrobe.

notwavingbutdrowning1 · 23/02/2025 10:20

I’d really recommend Uniqlo at the moment if you’re looking at a wardrobe update. The quality for trousers and t-shirts is great and they’ve got more of a fashion edge then they used to. They’re fulfilling the place in my wardrobe now that Gap did 20 years ago. They put garment measurements for every size online and do different lengths for some trousers. I’ve recently bought these:

and these:

and these amazing, luxurious thermal tops with cashmere in several colours:
