Stuck in a complete run with my wardrobe and need a bit of a refresh to look a bit more up to date.

Winter I live in skinny jeans and a roll neck with ankle or knee high boots or wellies

Summer, cropped trousers and a tunic type top, with flats or trainers (trainer socks!)

Not great on stuff being tight around my middle as apple shaped so can't get away with belts or tight waistbands.

Can anyone share some looks, ideally pictures so I can update a bit.

If you swap skinny jeans for non-see-through quality leggings in black or neutrals for the wellies/boots look that will already be better than skinnies..it's really a marker of age and wealth to be out in skinnies these days..

RockStarMartini · 31/01/2025 08:00

Is it? I know skinnies aren’t bang on trend any more but not sure how they relate to wealth or age - or is it only being ‘out’ that’s an issue. Will someone still look poor if they wear them round the house?

Ilovemyshed · 31/01/2025 10:14

But why are skinny jeans worse than skinny leggings if they are both black and skintight? The leggings were a 1980s thing anyway! Or does everyone just wear gymwear now?

I'm looking for new looks. I've found there is an endless appetite at the moment for loose trousers/jeans (wide leg, bootcut, barrel). There are loads of YouTube vids on dressing for apple shapes. Don't be afraid to loosely define your waist even if you don't have one. Tunics are awful for the figure. However, boots of all lengths appear to be in, with kitten heels and pointed toes.

Whoopsss · 31/01/2025 10:24

I like skinny jeans but they have been out for over 5 years and if you still wear them it looks like you haven't shopped in 5+ years. You know when someoje was locked up for so long and they emerge on release with their old but not quite vintage yet clothes? It's like that 🤣
Skinny jeans and jeggings have different fabric and stitching so it's not like leggings..the leggings also can't be cheap polyester stuff and definitely no baggy around knees or ankles which some jeggings have.
Fashion is frivolous and relies on consumerism 🤷‍♀️ you can ignore it and march to the beat of your own drum but I just commented in light of mainstream current taste. I personally think skinny jeans make more sense in UK's cold and rainy weather but it's not fashionable so next best thing is sporty, more expensive leggings.

no it isn't, real life is not social media influencers!

Loose fitting trousers are definitely more common now. Skinnies have been on the catwalks for a few seasons now but it takes a while to filter through to the average shopper. We had the 90s, it's natural the 00s will be back.

boxyboxs · 31/01/2025 10:34

@Ilovemyshed do you wear skirts & dresses? In the summer you could try a shirt with your cropped trousers

If you prefer skinny leg shapes you could try slim legs?

Hi OP, I think you are asking @Whoopsss , but as she explains - you asked how to be more fashionable, she replied. It is not because of Whoopss that they are more fashionable; they just are. That’s what fashion is - change.

I agree with @Whoopsss , if you like the skinny look, you need to change to posh leggings like Lululemon or Swetty Betty and sporty trainers or else wellies - à la Claudia in Traitors. If you don’t care about fashion, then you don’t need to do this. All are available on Vinted.

Personally, I moved on years ago and I haven’t worn leggings since lockdown, except to go for a run on a very cold day; but that’s just me - 12 months of living in leggings combined with WFH and homeschooling has left me with a residual hatred of them!!! Even though they are very practical!!!

How are skinny jeans a marker of wealth? If anything it would be the opposite because it means you haven't updated in ten years.

In b4 "try a jumpsuit" 🤪

DonnaGiovanna · 31/01/2025 10:45

Apple here and I've gone from skinnies and long tops to wide legs with more fitted shirts and sleeveless sweaters or longish cardigan/blazer, much more current and I feel more confident. Mostly just from M&S or Vinted/charity shop, nothing expensive. I was worried about uncomfortable waistline but buy fitted front/elastic back from marks - avoids the dumpy full-elasticated effect, looks more fitted but still v comfortable.

Yes a marker of lack of wealth, having or not having.

As a mid 40s, trying to catch up a little with fashion, a couple of things on my list to freshen up for spring/summer:
M&S palazzo jeans
Leopard slip skirt
Wide leg trousers - these are so comfy (and cheap!), really nice thick material. I have them in navy and they look great with a tucked or half tucked top or jumper and trainers. I want to get them in black however, I do recommend buying very long then washing before wearing as my navy ones shrunk up (waist still fine, just the leg) in the wash and aren't quite long enough now.

My young son's friends are all in adidas gazelle type trainers. M&S do some trainers in the style of brands but cheaper. I have these in blue, I also like these.

Also like the decent quality sports leggings look a la Claudia.

Thabks @Whoopsss and @Iloveshihtzus that makes sense.

OP posts:
Ilovemyshed · 31/01/2025 11:51

I should add, I struggle with wide legs as its rural and muddy where I live so they just get soggy hems !

Maybe I just switch back to leggings in winter with wellies, and carry on with the chunky sweaters.

I do have a couple of jumpsuits and some posh trainers (Fairfax and Favour) and I can probably get away with wider legs in the summer with those and maybe the odd dress and trainers.

Thanks for the links as well. Off to do some homework! Maybe a personal shopper appointment in the Spring.

boxyboxs · 31/01/2025 12:08

You could wear wider legs in a cropped length with boots & a jumper with a shorter hem.

These any good

I wouldn't say those trainers were particularly fashionable but you need to wear things that fit your lifestyle and that you feel comfortable in.

boxyboxs · 31/01/2025 12:17

a retro style coloured trainer is more "in"

boxyboxs · 31/01/2025 12:19

@cannaethink I have 2 pairs of those, I love them!
