Things that S and B hates but are actually pretty great

I have just leaned into being unfashionable and bought a pair of Fitflop trainers, after looking everywhere for comfortable city walking trainers. I expected them to be hideous given the flak they get on here, but actually, they look ok. Minimalist even. And are supremely comfortable. I had trendy Adidas before and they were so hard on my feet. Hate the large, ugly branding on NB, Hoka and other trendy trainers.

I feel the same way about my Seasalt Janelle, now in it's third year, much reviled on here, but I think it looks fine on me and is such good quality. Also my Land's End coat and swimsuit.

What other things do you like that are not trendy, but great quality and you wear all the time?

Skinny jeans. MN looks down on them now but I keep going back to them. They don't look amazing on me, but that's a me problem (short chunky legs) and I still wear them most days.

BleachedJumper · 29/12/2024 13:30

Fleeces! I bloody love a fleece jacket/three quarter zip top.

Supersimkin7 · 29/12/2024 13:37

Uggs. I am in the classic short with a vibram sole and they are delicious.

CheeseTime · 29/12/2024 13:39

Yes. Fleeces. Warm and light and easy to wash and dry. So practical. I sometimes think some people still think style and beauty = suffering.

MrsWhites · 29/12/2024 13:43

Another post for Uggs, can’t beat them in winter. I got a pair of Chesnut minis for Christmas.

I also love a good fleece, I got a lovely black fleece bomber jacket yesterday actually.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/12/2024 13:44

I'm with you on the Fitflop trainers OP

Chocolately · 29/12/2024 13:46

Crocs. I wear them with warm socks instead of slippers.

Floisme · 29/12/2024 13:51

Elasticated waistbands.

I don't like my Seasalt Janelle but, when the weather's spectacularly bad, nothing else does the job quite as well.

ClementsR2024 · 29/12/2024 13:53

I still quite like a heeled pump for the right occasion

AnyFucker · 29/12/2024 13:56

Crocs
Uggs
Dungarees
Teddy jackets
Bobby hats
Love them all

SushiWarrior · 29/12/2024 14:01

Leggings

TheOGCCL · 29/12/2024 14:03

I don't wear them really but I controversially prefer (good quality, well matched) nude tights to bare legs with closed toe shoes for Caucasians. Especially if it means people aren't badly streaky tanning their legs. Ankles are so tricky. And especially for formal occasions.

Fleeces are a tricky one because they are very much having a fashion revival. It's the too sensible, full zip in a single colour which aren't de rigueur.

Lentilweaver · 29/12/2024 14:16

I think I have just got older and am no longer prepared to suffer for beauty. Or handwash stuff.

I am currently loving a pair of Berghaus hiking boots, half price in the sale. Not cool or stylish. But so comfortable and waterproof.

I haven't looked closely at fleeces but certainly will now! Those Borg ones seem to be everywhere.

Radley bags. The quality is great for the price and the design involves pockets which are always the right size for all the things you need. They are well thought out.

Patienceinshortsupply · 29/12/2024 14:27

I take no notice of recommendations on S & B as frankly most of what is shared as the holy grail of clothing looks like something that an inmate in a Victorian asylum would have worn.

I love Seasalt, White Stuff, Fatface, Uggs and Fitflop. Don't give a fuck what I look like as long as I'm comfy - life's too short.

Cottonheadedninhymuggins · 29/12/2024 14:44

Barbour. I love my Barbour jacket.

Floisme · 29/12/2024 14:51

I don't think I've ever suffered for beauty.
I don't wear clothes that are uncomfortable but neither do I praise them to the skies if they are - it's a minimum, baseline requirement.

Floisme · 29/12/2024 14:54

Sorry I missed out a viral word:
'I don't wear clothes that are uncomfortable but neither do I praise them to the skies if they are comfortable.'

IlooklikeNigella · 29/12/2024 15:08

Fitted dresses above the knee. Yes I know they're not fashionable but you know what I've worked hard for my figure and I love showing it off. The oversized stuff just makes me want to hurl.

SushiWarrior · 29/12/2024 15:15

Longer line tops (I lost a lot of weight and I have a lot of excess lower stomach skin like an apron) and if I tuck tops in or wear shorter tops it looks horrific.

NordicwithTeen · 29/12/2024 15:17

Fleece.
I know, fashion hell, but sensibly warm and easy to wash which ticks my boxes for dog walking.

I keep looking at uggs but haven't had any in about 15 years and all I remember is walking on the sides of them andy feet getting soaked! I take it they are better now?

Fifiesta · 29/12/2024 15:28

Good to hear that so many of you are taking back ownership of your own opinion!
I am convinced that if you met the naysayers in real life, you would only think that about 10% of them deserved even a minute of your consideration.
Life really is too short.

RealHousewivesOfTaunton · 29/12/2024 15:28

Dry robes. Not glamorous but sooo cosy when standing on a windswept football pitch for DS's Saturday morning matches. Particularly when paired with snow boots and a fetching woolly hat.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/12/2024 15:31

I hate my Seasalt Janelle, mostly because they hadn't got black in stock so I bought green when they were half price in lockdown. I've probably only wore it 3 or 4 times. It works like a dream, but is so very, very ugly.

I like lots of things that get derided in here - biker jackets / denim jackets / short dresses with opaque tights / turtle and polo neck jumpers even though I've got a biggish bust.

I don't share the MN desire for things to be 'flattering' ir 'my colour' - if I like it and it fits and I don't think that I look like a pillock, then I'll wear it.
