@MiaN whats your favourite floral summer fragrance?

SOTD is Halfeti Leather. The sun was shining when I woke up today & although I wanted something lighter I realised I don’t have many lighter perfumes that I loved. Ended up picking Halfeti Leather from my discovery set as I liked the description but it was a mistake I think. It’s too strong. I know it’s the same vibe as Halfeti but for me it’s missing the smooth spicy warmth in the dry down which makes me want to sniff it all day. DH liked HL but said it’s much too strong. Wondering if I can wash this one off (Penhaligon fragrances usually last forever on me) & go for Empressa again. This is the lightest in this collection so far.

I got mixed up yesterday. I was wearing (& not loving) Legacy of Petra, NOT Constantinople. I’m yet to try that one.

Please can someone recommend a lighter discovery set? I’m looking for longevity (Penhaligon’s have spoiled me), something floral/sweet but not sickly sweet which I can wear on a sunny winter or spring day.

Edited

I have the sana Jardin discovery set arriving soon, 9 x 2ml for £24 I think with £35 towards any full bottle, may be worth a try.

Testing ianthe oud today. All I smell is parma violets! Not for me I think...

Byredo like a violet undertone in lots of theirs. I really don’t like it overpowering stuff but a couple have been ok.

SOTD boemia by granado. I love the stuff but eking out a small bottle

@happytobemrsg light and lasting fragrances are not that easy to come by. Some suggestions though:

Jo Loves and Jo Malone do lots of light, pleasant perfumes (it’s not the season for it, but actually wearing Lime, Basil and Mandarin today and enjoying it.) They are mostly Colognes so longevity isn’t great.

Some of the Diptyques maybe - Eau Rose, Eau Capitale, Philosykos?

Parfums de Marly women’s discovery set. I know @MiaN likes Athalia. I think Meliora or Cassilli might meet your brief for relatively light, relatively sweet and lasting fragrances.

Some more expensive lighter favourites of mine you may need to find somewhere to try in store would include:

  • Chanel Beige
  • Chanel Comete
  • Frederic Malle En Passant
All florals and more traditional perfumes, none of them particularly sweet though.
happytobemrsg · 09/12/2024 15:57

@IDontHateRainbows That was in my basket so I’ve gone ahead & bought it with the discount ☺️

Thank you @AprilLady. This one looks like a nice discovery set Parfums De Marly
I’ll put it on my list. I’m Wondering if going back to my old favourite Flowerbomb might be the answer. I was considering JM Peony & Blush Suede but like you said, I’m concerned about longevity. I think it can be layered with JM Velvet Rose & Oud which I’m getting for Christmas

MiaN · 09/12/2024 18:01

I agree with Parfums de Marley recommendation. if you like oud you likely like different things then me but for the variety I would try

Power tuberose - Carnal Flower Frederic Malle
Bubblegumy tuberose - Gvenchy linterdit rouge ultime for colder months
Complex rose patchouli - Portrait of Lady Frederic Malle

Oriental floral - Thameen Pelegrina
Have you tried baccarat rouge 540?

Going towards softer florals that are my type
Flower shop type fresh - Florist Ellys Brooklyn
Fruity floral - chanel chance eau tendre
Green floral - La Tulipe. It's like tulip with the stem, my only problem is the Longevity

I think some designer perfumes can also offer options such as good girl, valentino born in roma

The few I like from PDM - Athalia ot my nose is incense more then flowery, Delina La Rose fresh and clean rose, Valaya musky fresh rose. They have great sample set and the price goes against purchase and enough versatility to suit different tastes.

CorneliaStreet · 09/12/2024 18:06

I found Peony and Blush Suede to be one of the better lasting Jo Malones, but none of the ones I’ve tried have been great for longevity (though the clovey dry down of Pomegranate Noir unfortunately goes one for hours!).

Have you tried Miller Harris? Their fragrances are pretty good for longevity and they have some lighter options, like Lumiere Doree (neroli) and Secret Gardenia (white floral, but with some fresher notes).

IDontHateRainbows · 09/12/2024 19:33

SOT evening is byredo mumbai noise mixed with kayali vanilla 28. They really balance each other out imo. The mumbai on its own can be a bit heavy, the vanilla 28 a bit too sweet. Perfect as a pairing.

Bonfire bash for me tonight

I've tested Guerlain Mitsouko today. It's an old-school chypre and wow, what a perfume. It's quite overpowering at first, but then settles into a soft powdery scent with very strong projection. It reminded me of Chanel no 5 a bit. The longevity is out of this world - I can still smell it after 10 hours. It also smells very comforting. If I wasn't looking for a different scent profile this time, I would have been tempted by a bigger bottle.

Have also tried Montale, Ristretto Intense Cafe and not too sure about this one. I thought I would really like it since I am a coffee addict, but it turns out I don't really like smelling coffee on myself all day long, plus it turned slightly sour after a couple of hours.

Howmanyroses · 09/12/2024 20:37

MiaN · 09/12/2024 06:07

Rating 1 to 10 is interesting as what would I rate them on?
Versatility - Naxos is masterpiece but also not crowd pleaser. I smell something different every time I smell it - sweet, smokey, citrus, medicinal - I have limited use for such perfume and wearing it is more experience than signature scent.
Longevity - Orange Sanguine - is fantastic fresh cut orange but longevity is poor.
Seasons - Bal D'afrique - if I can save only one from my collection this is the one I will be saving, but it is little too little when it's under 5 degrees out and I am spending time outdoors.

I tried to narrow down to 5 current favourites in my collection but can't. My favourite 10 if I must own only 10 and I feel if I can have 20 full size I can have perfect size collection. I have bit more than that and there is some repetition/redundancy in the citrus category.

1&2 Easy reach versatile for spring summer/Bal D'Afrique and fall winter - Gris Charnel. They will both work for me day and night in the relevant season.

3&4 Take me places picks - PDM Athalia/incense takes me to yoga studio. Oaui hair st Barts and body spray - takes me on beach vacation. I love yoga and the beach.

5&6 Fresh and clean - Arizona Bloom Floral Street (like warm skin after sea water swim, salty, slightly coconutty, so good) & Frederic Malle Acne Studios - shower fresh, laundry vibes at time.

7&8 citrus - Orange Sanguine Atelier Cologne - for fresh but sweet citrus & maybe Ingenious Ginger as it's my latest purchase. Ingenious Ginger that's bit ambery to my nose, it may appeal to someone who likes ambers but wants something for heat/warm weather. It has abit of a bite form ginger & amber notes.

9&10 shampoo fresh - Mojave Ghost, Chanel Change eau Tendre - soft fruity florals, I enjoy them and they tend to be more crowd pleasers then Acne Studios for example which can lean too clean.

I will be very sad leaving behind Clean Reserve clean, PDM Delina Rosee, Xerjoff LIra, Kayali Burning Cherry, Queen of the Night Merchant of Venice, Sea Salt and Wood Sage Jo Malone, BDK Vanille Leather and all atelier cologne perfume. But in reality the first 10 will suit my preferance and lifestyle. So while I venture to vanillas/gourmands in the coldest months I naturally gravitate to soft clean and fresh scents.

I am really surprised I didn't feel the need to include single Givenchy L'Interdit, considering I have most of the flankers.

@AprilLady could you narrow your top favourites to 10? you have fab collection of great perfumes I am curious to know.

I didn't really think too hard about the criteria, just rating overall across a number of things and see which ones come to the top of the list before committing to a full bottle. Some questions I would ask myself - Would I want to wear this everyday or almost every day for a year? Does it have longevity? Do I still like it after 2 hours on my skin? How does it make me feel when I put it on and wear it for some time? A perfume needs to make me feel like I warm comforting hug, when I feel cozy, happy and content, I know it's the one :) I don't go by seasons and happy to wear the same 2-3 perfumes year-round, but would probably just pick something based on my mood.

Millymollymine · 09/12/2024 21:09

SOTD was FM Musc Ravageur - I read all the reviews and really expected to like this - I have a discovery set and hadn’t realised it was in it - but sadly I really disliked it. I think it’s just a bit too musky for me - I can’t put my finger on it but there is something in there that makes it an off putting smell for me

AprilLady · 09/12/2024 21:28

@MiaN sadly, having thought about it, I’d find a top ten really, really hard. I tried and ended up with a list of 25! Will think a bit more about which of those would make a top 10.

@Howmanyroses if you are tempted, Notino often has very good deals on Mitsouko.

Thanks AprilLady, I think I am looking to invest in something less 'classic' this time, ready for a change!

Iandhd23 · 09/12/2024 22:02

Today I tried Duchessa by Gritti and was pleasantly surprised as someone who isn’t the biggest lover of cherry. The opening was a bit too loud for me but the dry down is so beautiful. However I kind of regret getting a sample of this as the price of a full bottle makes me want to cry…
I’m interested to see if any of you have tried this fragrance and any other (cheaper) cherry fragrances and how they compare to you?

happytobemrsg · 09/12/2024 23:24

@MiaN I've taken a screenshot of this list, thank you. I’m very new to perfumes really. Would a trip to somewhere like Liberty give me a good variety of brands such as the ones you have mentioned? Or are samples the better way to go? I have not heard of baccarat rouge 540 but I am compiling a list on the sniff app of perfumes to try.

@CorneliaStreet I wonder if layering it with another perfume would help with longevity? It’s crazy how with my previous JM perfume (Poppy & Barley) I really had to spritz it on whereas one spray of anything from Penhaligon’s at the moment seems to last forever. I’ve not heard of the brand you mentioned but will look into it! Thank you

MiaN · 10/12/2024 06:59

You will save a lot if you can go to a good perfume shop few times and sniff things and only get sample sets that you can't find on store. You can still get sample set for brand you are interested in testing better. I still recommend skin testing a perfume and walking out letting it drydown fit few hours before spending your hard earned cash.

I think I choose the wrong full bottle of spicy vanilla. Wearing BDK Leather Vanille today, I have 10ml only and I enjoy it a lot more then Ginger Biscuit Jo Malone. I think it is the 4, those two, Penhaligon's Babylon and Merchant of Venice Queen of the Night, BDK of my favourite. I will need to wear it few days to compare properly.

IDontHateRainbows · 10/12/2024 07:38

Gris Charnel for me today. It's like a cup of warm spicy tea as i thik @MiaN described, and I'll be needing a cup of warm spicy tea later after a heavy day of meetings - this will have to do.

Sounds interesting (the leather vanille) although I really don't need to get any more samples! I have a love-hate relationship with vanilla, I don't like the overly sweet ones but a good spicy deep one, now you're talking!

hughiedoesntfight · 10/12/2024 07:50

I wore Hera reigns yesterday for my meeting. I like it more, the more times I wear it.

I wore angel dust to bed last night. It’s so comforting and snuggly.

To I have on Dear Polly. I am really enjoying Ted scents lately. Which I have never been bothered by before. But something about them is very uplifting for me at the moment.

MiaN · 10/12/2024 07:51

A lot of very sweet vanilla perfumes smell like burned rubber to me.

I need to read my posts before posting- my autocorrect and predictive text are messing up my posts!
"I think is the" 4 should read out of the 4
"BDK of my" should read BDK is my

Ooh I have BDK Leather Vanille but haven't tried it yet! Really excited to try it out in the next few days. LM Ambre Vanille for me today, I really like it but I think oversprayed in my excitement :)

Howmanyroses · 10/12/2024 08:13

I have also worn Ginger Biscuit again and liked it a lot more the second time around. Looks like I may need to expand out of my top 10 soon...

evtheria · 10/12/2024 10:56

Glad to find the new thread, missed reading about new-to-me scents!

Today I am trying out Le sel d'Issey - was going to automatically pass the sample to DP but then read it has ginger, which I didn't expect, so spritzed some on. It's very 90s. Fresh, marine, but not simple 'male aftershave'. Quite like it! An easy wear.

happytobemrsg · 10/12/2024 11:41

@MiaN Thats exactly whet I did before I bought Halfeti. I sprayed it on in store then carried on shopping. I went back a couple of hours to buy it after I knew for sure that I loved it. Regarding your vanillas, I absolutely LOVED Babylon. After the first hour, the warm vanilla really came through for me and it was really comforting. Do you prefer the one you are wearing today (BDK)? Why is that? I might put it on my list of samples to try.

@IDontHateRainbows I’ve heard Gris Charnel mentioned quite a lot on this thread. Seems very popular! Is it one of your favourites?

@Howmanyroses funny how some perfumes need a few wears! Is the ginger really strong? Is that the main note? I don’t like eating ginger biscuits so I don’t know if that would put me off 😂

SOTD - Halfeti. After wearing a few others in my Trade Routes set I missed this one. It already feels signature scent worthy to me. Like coming home. Can I ask - do you think it can be worn all year round? Or cold weather only?
