Let’s talk about White stuff

Was passing today and I saw this lovely pair of glittery socks in the window suitable for a Christmas present.
Went in there to buy them and remembered what a pile of old shit it is.
Back in the early 2000s it was the place to go for young mums- , who remembers the velvet coats, the a line printed skirts, endless layering , the knitted tights that was quite the look then?

However, it does not seem to have moved on at all. Whilst there is the odd nice thing in there, glittery socks and a lovely gold bag I saw (can’t afford mustn’t buy) It’s just a riot of print with no kind of theme and really poor display.

Do you go to White stuff? What do you rate in there, do you think it’s lost its way?

But interesting how it’s totally dropped off my radar, I never hear of anyone talking about it. But someone must go there.

I think the quality is good. I've had some items for years. It's like all clothing choices, completely subjective. Some people think it's not cool, but that doesn't bother me.

tallegorical · 12/11/2024 18:00

It's old fashions and frumpy but lots of people like that kind of thing

KitsyWitsy · 12/11/2024 18:00

The odd thing is ok. A lot of the dresses are shapeless. I like Fat Face better.

KirstenBlest · 12/11/2024 18:03

The local shop to me has nice clothes, as does the FatFace one, and what I've had or have from those brands (very little) seem decent quality, but I have to sort of make myself go in.

WhiteStuff seems a bit like a cheaper version of Seasalt, and FatFace is sort of 'dull but safe'.

My mother wears their clothes as 'everyday'. She's a trendy 80.

LeticiaMorales · 12/11/2024 18:03

At least they don't sell those polyester tiered monstrosities that have dominated many shops for the past few years.

Abitofhassle · 12/11/2024 18:05

Thank you, you made me laugh and I needed it!

Also, I happened to go in at the weekend and it’s not for me. I just wouldn’t suit those clothes but I do like their handbags. A good one you say…

TheCanaryInThePurpleSkirt · 12/11/2024 18:05

I think it used to be lovely stuff. A bit different and a treat when I had something from them. Now it’s all overpriced tat, shapeless and ill fitting.

Very overpriced.

GetrudeCoppard · 12/11/2024 18:08

White Stuff is utter frumpsville. So many hideous patterns. I walk past one most days in town and think ‘WTAF?’ just by looking at the window display.

My MIL loves it though.

Patienceinshortsupply · 12/11/2024 18:10

Most of my wardrobe is from there Hmm I'm 54, like natural fibres and I love their tunic tops to wear with skinny jeans, nice boots and a cashmere cardie! It's my work uniform.

I'll get my coat......

Gamergirl86 · 12/11/2024 18:12

I love whitestuff and fatface!
It's good quality for highstreet and mostly cotton and wool items which last.
I don't go for all their styles and certainly avoid some of the more loud/bold prints but that's because they don't suit me particularly.

Most of their dresses are shapely and flattering, coats are warm and I like their line of soft cotton shirts to wear with jeans etc.

For reference I'm 40, mum of three and still think the 90s had the best music

I used to live Whit Stuff say 15 years ago. I remember being given a £150 voucher and was thrilled.

I did buy a couple of ponchos there last year for working from home but otherwise nothing for ages. It's a shame, I used to love it.

Walkingtheplank · 12/11/2024 18:16

White Stuff even!

levantine · 12/11/2024 18:16

I loved White Stuff when my kids were little - c 2010. They used to have really lovely prints.

What’s not to love about a woolly tabard? 😂

Coddy · 12/11/2024 18:21

I can’t find those glitter socks on the website at all. I ordered another pair for my daughter-in-law and I kind of teal colour and they feel lovely.

Knitwear quality is dreadful, pilling is awful and washes very badly. Horribly overpriced for such poor quality.

PrincessFluffyPants · 12/11/2024 18:42

I like White Stuff, it's my go to for smart/casual work wear. I do pick my pieces carefully though and never buy the horrendous large patterned tops or dresses.
I like that I can mix and match the pieces over various seasons and years, the quality is good and nothing is falling apart (yet!)

KirstenBlest · 12/11/2024 18:42

Introducing Wendy | White Stuff She looks terrific.

ApolloandDaphne · 12/11/2024 18:47

I don't really know who it is aimed at. I am 62 and think the stuff is a bit on the frumpy side. Im not loving Fatface or Seasalt at the moment either. I find the patterned stuff over fussy. I actually have no idea where to shop anymore. I mostly just go to Uniqlo now.

I think Wendy and this sort of look is exactly their demographic.

HorribleHisTories15 · 12/11/2024 18:48

I like them and then get incredibly disappointed by them. White stuff keep using dull tones. Never a deep navy blue or a rich wine red, but a dull duck's egg blue/ grey and a mild terracotta orange. The tones do not suit my skin tone. That model in one of your pictures @OP has been very good at modelling their clothes for ages, bless her, white stuff colour scheme works for her, but it really doesn't work for many skin tones, until we have a significant amount of grey hair.

Yes, I have the odd piece, but can I go in and buy something just because? No, the colour will likely be off. Fat Face seems to have understood the wider colour palette.
