How many winter coats do you have?

For as long as I can remember I have always had a smart wool coat and a casual water resistant puffer style as the absolute minimum. Right now I also have a fleece jacket, a waterproof poncho and a ridiculously impractical but joyful jacket thing.
I need to replace my wool coat and my husband is surprised that I need to and that I can’t rely on what I have. (He’s not being a d*ck and I don’t need to LTB). For context I do hybrid working and do need to look smart often but not always, I also like to wear a smart coat if I am wearing a nice outfit for dinner etc.
So… how does this benchmark and am I being excessive??!

Just the one!

Frieda12 · 17/09/2024 11:26

Probably about 10 and I also have a selection of lighter weight ones I layer!

scatterbrain3000 · 17/09/2024 11:29

I usually have a smart wool winter coat, a light showerproof nice/interesting summer coat, a proper cagoule, plus one or two velvety or cord jacket/blazer type things.

Out of what you've listed I'd consider the wool coat the most essential to have and therefore replace!

Isometimeswonder · 17/09/2024 11:32

I have about 25 if you count denim jackets etc and rain macs.

ChungKing · 17/09/2024 11:34

I have a big fleece-lined waterproof one for the worst days, a nice fitted one for the rare time I need to look smart, and a lighter waterproof one I can wear when it's wet but not too cold.

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 17/09/2024 11:36

I have:

Smart, black, wool coat
Thin raincoat (used mostly in spring)
Big, puffy, calf length coat (everyday coat
Leather jacket

I always have fleeces, random blazers or jackets but I don't consider these as coats. The fleeces in particular I wear during autumn and winter working from home so the heating isn't on all day every day.

Whatchamacall · 17/09/2024 11:43

Thank you all, it doesn’t feel like I’m an outlier which is helpful.
For those with 10 plus coats, where do you store them? I live in a terrace house with what I think is good fitted storage but I think I’m at my max storage wise.

2 really. I have a smart(er) one - dark brown cotton twill outer, padded/insulated and with part fleece lining that I used to wear for work ( retired now). Then I have my waterproof padded one that I bought during lockdown when my entire life was spent with my friend and her 3 little ones tramping round the park in the mud and rain.

I do have a zip up hoodie and a smarter padded jacket but neither are really suitable for full on winter wear. I also have a "hippie unique" jacket that I made myself from charity shop woollen jumpers that I turned into boiled wool in the washing machine. It is very warm and I usually use it for things like camping!

Grannyinnwaiting · 17/09/2024 12:11

Black for funerals
Shearling for cold weather
Tweed for everyday
Posh tweed for socialising
Duvet coat for general running around
Think I'll buy a camel coat this year

Igmum · 17/09/2024 12:26

One. Still got my old one as well which I wore for a decade. I also have one lighter summer/spring coat.

henlake7 · 17/09/2024 13:53

long army green wool coat
long grey wool coat
black mid length puffer
black short puffer
long tweed trenchcoat
navy mid length puffer
short camel wool coat
short teal thick fleece coat

All the rest I would call autumn or summer coats and jackets! Im lucky that I have a box room I dont use so it acts like a giant storeroom/wardrobe/ clothes drying room!

I just love having lots of options! (and I also love a bargain so everything has been bought in sales or second hand....I think the most expensive coat was £40!).

Startingagainandagain · 17/09/2024 14:10

-Long wool coat
-mid length puffy coat (bought on sale last year) with hood. Live by the sea and we are battered by wind all the time in the winter.
-waist length puffy jacket used mainly for riding lessons :) and running
-a beige rain coat. Had it for years, from M&S
-a fake fur mid-length, also M&S
-leather jackets. Again have had them for years.

Writing this I realise that I have more than enough winter stuff and won't need to buy anything for quite some time!

RandomUsernameHere · 17/09/2024 14:15

3 raincoats
2 quilted
1 trench
1 wool pea coat
1 gilet

AlexandraJJ · 17/09/2024 14:19

At least 20 🤦‍♀️ I didn’t think I had a thing for them. Clearly I have as I’ve been looking at some more 🛍️😎

EternallyDelighted · 17/09/2024 14:45

Long, thick fleece lined waterproof, for when it is cold and wet
Gore-tex for very wet but not too cold
Thin black puffer jacket for moderately cold but not wet, it is a nice shape and no hood so not as casual as some of them
Waterproof poncho for emergency rainwear

I had a wool one years ago but it wasn't warm (cold draught up the sleeves), I got rid of it about 15 years ago and have never replaced it, I just don't really need a smart coat. I have worn the black puffer to funerals open with smart clothes underneath, it comes off as soon as I go inside, I haven't been to a winter wedding in about 25 years and I drive to work so only need a thin one on work days, again the puffer does the job. If I had more storage and cash to spare I might buy another wool one but I can't imagine using it much.

I have a lot more than 10 🤣

I live in a one bedroom flat, so storage is key. My secret is vacuum bags; just put the coats in neatly, vac the air out and then you can just stick them in a suitcase or under the bed, or whatever 👍

MWNA · 17/09/2024 15:57

I don't own a coat. I wear hoodies in winter and if it's cold(er), I wear a scarf and gloves too.

MWNA · 17/09/2024 15:58

Igmum · 17/09/2024 12:26

One. Still got my old one as well which I wore for a decade. I also have one lighter summer/spring coat.

So two then.

CanYouHearThatNoise · 17/09/2024 15:59

Just one (it's a waterproof Parka actually). I absolutely hate wearing coats (but am usually in a car)

MWNA · 17/09/2024 15:59

I hate them too! 😫

MazeRunner · 17/09/2024 16:11

A long blk wool smart coat from Cos. Slightly oversize. Had it about 5 years. Goes with everything.
A bright pink wool mix overcoat from Asos. I don’t wear it often, but I love it.
A vintage long heavy faux fur lined black coat (more dressy) I wear if going somewhere fancy - so not often 😆
A cream fleece from Uniqlo
An olive quilted short jacket from H&M
My trusty navy Northface waterproof jacket. I’ve had it about 7 years & it still looks new. Worth the ££.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 17/09/2024 16:22

I have 3 coats. A smart black wool coat, which is saved for nice occasions.

An everyday long length black padded superdry coat which is like wearing a sleeping bag and I wouldn't be without it!

Then another shorter coat, which is more for autumn spring as it's not as thick as the above.

I also have a dry robe which I wear to watch my son play football as it's warm and waterproof.

Pavolvaa · 17/09/2024 16:27

30 plus! Puffas, wool, faux fur, biker jackets, denim, trenches, smart zip up short ones I have been through to try to get rid of some but I wear them
all.

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/09/2024 16:32

I have four (going by those that are only for Winter not Spring or Autumn jackets). I inherited one and bought two at charity shops which are excellent I find for coats. Storage is a bit of a problem as we don't have much, several tend to live in my car boot.

OnlyFrench · 17/09/2024 16:43

Navy, grey, white and sludgy wool
Tan suede
Black leather
Cream and black long puffas
Two lightweight macs

Nothing like as many as I thought
