Warm but stylish winter coat

Isthisit22 · 13/09/2024 13:01

During lockdown I got used to wearing an enormous, almost ankle length duvet coat and it’s ruined me for all other coats.
I wear a lot of wide legged smart trousers and am looking for a warm coat to wear that is practical (ideally waterproof) but still stylish.

Following as I'm looking for the same. Should be easy in theory - but doesn't seem to be!

minipie · 13/09/2024 14:08

I think there are two choices here

1 Buy the most stylish puffer coat or warm lined parka you can find, but accept it will always look like a practical coat

2 Buy a stylish but non waterproof coat (wool fitted coat for example) and accept you will need an umbrella in changeable weather

TheOGCCL · 13/09/2024 19:02

This is the holy grail so let me know if you find anything 😃

I think some puffer coats/parkas are more elevated than others, look for details in the collar, the hood, the hardware, the pockets, even the type of quilting. Fur on a puffer tends to lean more casual. The hood packing away is quite good as hoods immediately make something less smart looking.

The FatFace coat looks more casual than the Apricot one:

That is gorgeous.

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-wool-blend-check-cocoon-coat-multi/p112018419?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

This cocoon should still have a cosy feel. My daughter has a check coat like this and it looks great. With a wool coat, you can scotch guard it and showers just roll off.

VenusClapTrap · 14/09/2024 10:45

I don’t think puffa coats can ever look stylish. The sleeping bag vibe is too strong. I agree with pp you need a good quality, lined, wool coat. Extra layer underneath and a hat.

PadstowGirl · 14/09/2024 10:55

Lands end, Squall, long stadium coat. On sale at £172.

Osco · 14/09/2024 16:44

My mum has a lovely Tommy Hilfiger puffa navy coat. It’s long but light and warm. I think it’s quite elegant - definitely not too puffy.

itsjustbiology · 14/09/2024 18:06

Don't know anything about puffer type coats but for a stylish winter coat try Holland Cooper!

I bought a very similar John Lewis coat last year. It was ridiculously huge and had to go back. I do love a cocoon coat though. I want one long enough to cover my bum, but not so long it’s flapping around my ankles.

MadamTeapot · 14/09/2024 19:15

The Land’s End Squall coat is what we all wear up here in the Highlands. One neighbour bought it, lots of us oohed and aahed, then another bought one, and so on and so on. Never had as many compliments and people asking where it’s from for any other clothing!

KirstenBlest · 14/09/2024 19:57

@MadamTeapot , it looks nice but what makes it so good?

I've had various winter coats in recent years from Superdry that are really warm and pretty stylish.

I'd say if this isn't your cup of tea, then I would go for a more tailored wool coat from somewhere like John Lewis.

I know it's hated on here but I have a long Moncler puffer. It's absolutely warm, waterproof, very feminine and fitted cut and just so flattering. Also, the black that I have is just such a nice looking black.
I'm not a fan of sack like and frumpy huge coats.

Isthisit22 · 14/09/2024 21:36

Some great suggestions. I love the Hobbs costs but I have a few similar that I wear to work.
I bought this today because it looked really expensive on and I was amazed it was so cheap. Then think I’ll get a long waterproof. Does anyone know if Didrikson can be bought in the UK?

My mum has a lovely Tommy Hilfiger puffa navy coat. I would suggest you that

Tralalaka · 14/09/2024 22:23

The honest answer is that you have to throw serious money at it. Moncler, woolrich, moos knuckle, mackage. They’re all in a different league in terms of fit and style

drspouse · 14/09/2024 22:29

I have something similar to this, but I think a bit longer, it's waterproof but doesn't look like you're about to climb a hill, and long enough to wear a long cardigan under it.

My DD has the Superdry Fuji Jacket , I have the long one ( and it is long !)

Or there's this one ( Landsend) which is waterproof ( but it's down filled so not for me )

Have you tried Uniqlo? I got this coat from there in the January sales and absolutely love it. It didn't look very exciting on the website and I had to go and try a load on, but they have a few similar styles (sorry about the EU website link, I'm abroad atm, but I bought the coat in a UK store)

SilverGlitterBaubles · 15/09/2024 06:42

Following with interest as also on the hunt for a winter coat.

RedRedRobot · 15/09/2024 06:56

Yes Didrikson are available in the UK! I think possibly in John Lewis but I got mine in an outdoorsy type shop. It's lasted for years.
