Warm but stylish winter coat

Isthisit22 · 13/09/2024 13:01

During lockdown I got used to wearing an enormous, almost ankle length duvet coat and it’s ruined me for all other coats.
I wear a lot of wide legged smart trousers and am looking for a warm coat to wear that is practical (ideally waterproof) but still stylish.

Pile Coat - Beige - ARKET GB
@PassTheWineAndCrispsPlease , that one doesn't do it for me, the hem would get muddy. It's a lot of money for polyester.

I bought my Didrikson parka from Amazon many years ago. Probably at least eight years ago, more like 10. It's indestructible and still waterproof and people do comment on it.

Still available via Amazon:

I have a Didrikson. Had it for about 2 years - it's been cleaned in line with instruction and the colour has faded and i've had to re-waterproof it twice.
For the money (£300ish) i'm not impressed

Mine is at least 8 years old. I wash it in the washing machine and put in the reproofing liquid. It looks like new!

I got it for about £150 in a sale.

drspouse · 18/09/2024 18:49

I quite like the look of those Didriksons. Don't suppose they are likely to be in Prime Day ..

drspouse · 18/09/2024 18:50

Though actually this looks like a good price...

I've had various winter coats in recent years from Superdry that are really warm and pretty stylish.

I'd say if this isn't your cup of tea, then I would go for a more tailored wool coat from somewhere like John Lewis.

Loving the Superdry coat!

I have a Dridriksons Frida and love it. The fact that it's windproof as well as waterproof keeps you really warm even on horrible days. Also loads of really handy pockets and doesn't have the shiny finish a lot of waterproof coats have.

drspouse · 19/09/2024 08:27

I forgot the link. Apart from the puffa coats and short jackets I can't really see the difference between these!

I got one tailor made. It was under £250 including fabrics. I could have got a lot cheaper from some of the tailors near me, but I prefer to stick with the one I know. I bought my own fabric - chose the face fabric, lining, and buttons.

I just don't see why I would pay that kind of money for something off the shelf when I could have something to my exact specifications and body shape.

I had one already from a vintage shop that I loved, but was looking worn, so I got the tailor to copy that style but add in things like an extra layer of padding so it's suitable for winter. And she was able to advise on things like making the neckline a more modern style.

Thats not very long is it? looks just past the bum. I like ones that come to my knees.

I tired the M&S thermowarm coat on yesterday, it's a lot (and I do mean a lot) nicer on than in the pictures. Its not as big and baggy as they make it look, and it was defintiely warm. I have to wait for pay day but I'm sorely tempted by it.

Not full length, no. I'm 5'6" and it is mid-thigh on me.

Some great suggestions. I love the Hobbs costs but I have a few similar that I wear to work.
I bought this today because it looked really expensive on and I was amazed it was so cheap. Then think I’ll get a long waterproof. Does anyone know if Didrikson can be bought in the UK?

I honestly do NOT need another coat, but that one, at that price …

Tattletail · 19/09/2024 15:17

This doesn't tick any of your boxes (and is expensive) but I saw it and wanted to share 😄

I have images of Phoebe from friends wearing it with wide leg trousers.

This is the one I bought in cream and am very tempted to get it in navy too, as will be more practical!
Still don’t think it will compare in warmth to the massive duvet coat I had though

Vintage works - aquascutum or old jaeger made phenomenally warm wool coats back in the day. Beautifully cut.

Southbound47 · 20/09/2024 10:31

If you already have stylish work coats covered then just go for 100% practical eg get a Didrikson and never look back. I have 2 Didrikson coats a warm one for winter and a raincoat one for summer. They are both 100% waterproof, and can handle anything the weather throws at them. Highly, highly recommend.

Aquascutum - there’s a blast from the past. I had a summer job with them, decades ago. Their coats were truly top quality, last-a-lifetime pieces.

FunWithFlagz · 21/09/2024 18:49

I have this one - https://www.seasaltcornwall.com/janelle-knee-length-waterproof-raincoat

It’s so warm and totally waterproof. I love it

I have one. Bought it decades ago because it was one I knew I'd always like. I still do.

BlueFlowers5 · 21/09/2024 19:03

I bought a Hush wool single breasted coat last winter. In dark grey.

Picklelily99 · 21/09/2024 19:12

I have 2x beautiful Hobbs wool coats, bought 3/4 years ago. One still has the label on. Never wear them, except for 'really good'! I made the mistake of buying Seasalt 'Plant Hunter' and 'Janelle' coats in the sale. Warm, waterproof, windproof, parka style. I wear them ALL the time! The one I bought for 'knocking around the doors' instantly became my favourite, and the other is now my 'off to the park' one. They need 'nikwaxxing' every couple of years, so they really are waterproof. Not cheap at approx. £160 each, but my goodness, they're worth it! No soggy thighs or knees and they have a hood. Shhh, don't tell anyone!
