Warm but stylish winter coat

During lockdown I got used to wearing an enormous, almost ankle length duvet coat and it’s ruined me for all other coats.
I wear a lot of wide legged smart trousers and am looking for a warm coat to wear that is practical (ideally waterproof) but still stylish.

I find my wool coat warm in general low temperatures/crisp, dry days, but it's no good in wind or damp air. You need the taped seams for that.

I have one wool coat and one parka which I love. Unfortunately it isn't waterproof though, only water resistant. I got caught in heavy rain last year and it took ages to dry out. Is there something I can spray on it to make it waterproof or at least more resistant?

I couldn't wear a Rainsisters coat! I'm too short and don't wear flared things so I don't look any shorter.

They do them in petite!

Wool IS warm. Some of the "wool" coats are in fact mainly polyester and they definitely are not. I don't really get why sellers get away with describing coats as wool with such low wool content.

Agree, if you get a 100% wool coat it will be really warm. I have several padded coats from Icebreaker with wool inner lining and padding and they are much nicer to wear and warmer than those with synthetic lining and padding.

They also have synthetic outer fabric which is water resistant with DWT. Having looked on their website they don't seem to sell them anymore, but you might find something similar.

In the past I have had 100%wool coats too and with full coverage they will be really warm. However, any gaps will let in the cold, which is often the case with more stylish long wool coats.

It's the look - not the sizing - if I make myself look wider, I automatically look shorter.

I've had various winter coats in recent years from Superdry that are really warm and pretty stylish.

I'd say if this isn't your cup of tea, then I would go for a more tailored wool coat from somewhere like John Lewis.

@ForeverDelayedEpiphany thanks for this, that super dry coat was on sale so I’ve just ordered it!

I'm by no means petite and find that quilting often makes a coat stiffer, so it stands out and makes me look vast. I've had parka-type coats (synthetic rather than cotton) in the past that were padded and waterproofed but not quilted so were more flattering - I just can't find anything like that this year.

I’m looking for the holy grail of a hooded pure wool coat. Used to have several in the past but they seem to be as rare as hens teeth these days.Pure wool is warm & shower proof if not waterproof, works for sheep.
I have a hooded sheepskin duffle coat but you really need icy conditions not to be in danger of overheating!

Etsy. Various options, be careful to read descriptions and check reviews, but you’ll get a pure wool hooded coat on there.

Sheepskin is incredibly warm, if you can find one that doesn’t have Rodney vibes. Not waterproof of course.

Rodney vibes! 😆

now there's a happy blast from the past reminder.

I bought a similar coat to this in navy from Z & V a couple of years ago. It’s stunning and very good quality. (Albeit v expensive !)

<I know this is a few weeks on but>

I have this in the long version (navy) , I bought the black one for DD (she wanted the jacket length)
Nice and warm, narrow padded lines so no Michelin Man bulk.

I took the hood off as the fur was attached (don't like fur )

And it isn't down or feather , it's recycled material ( feather/down is a No for me)

Very discreet logo on shoulder .

BestIsWest · 23/11/2024 11:07

They may not exist any more, although John Lewis still have a handful but the best coat I ever had was from Four Seasons. It still lurks in the back of my wardrobe in the hope it will fit me again one day.
