Warm but stylish winter coat

During lockdown I got used to wearing an enormous, almost ankle length duvet coat and it’s ruined me for all other coats.
I wear a lot of wide legged smart trousers and am looking for a warm coat to wear that is practical (ideally waterproof) but still stylish.

Great coat ...

I agree. I've just replaced my Landsend stadium coat & this one is definitely more stylish!

The Land’s End Squall coat is what we all wear up here in the Highlands. One neighbour bought it, lots of us oohed and aahed, then another bought one, and so on and so on. Never had as many compliments and people asking where it’s from for any other clothing!

Are they warm and waterproof? My school run is along the north east coast.

Yes Didrikson are available in the UK! I think possibly in John Lewis but I got mine in an outdoorsy type shop. It's lasted for years.

Got mine from Cotswold Oudoors

malificent7 · 15/09/2024 07:23

Ive got a Craghoppers coat. Padded but not puffa. Lond, sleek waterproof. I think it was £60. Lasted 3 years and still going strong. I ordered the seasalt janelle but sent it back when this came through the post.

How strange! You've reminded me I have this coat in black.. must be 3 years old now only worn a handful of times. I'm going to dig it out! 😆

LookItsMeAgain · 15/09/2024 07:35

I think that you're really looking for the holy grail of coats. You should be looking for a waterproof coat and the warmth will be from whatever you're wearing under it.

I haven't bought one from this crowd but they look like coats designed for women rather than rectangular duvets sewn together to make a puffa jacket.

Coats for Colder Weather

If you are looking for the perfect Autumn and Spring coat, we got you covered. Made from high quality membrane fabric with a fleece inner layer these coats are more appropriate for colder weather. We suggest wearing them in temperatures ranging from 0°...

I gave up for winter, as I needed mine for rugby mum/football mum days. I got a Trespass Audrey which is a knee-length duvet coat. For general wear though I got a Seasalt Lill Cove which is a bit shorter.

I'm not sure that there's such a thing as a warm waterproof (not water resistant) that also looks what I would call "corporate". I've got a Burberry wool one for conferences and the like so I just use an umbrella.

anxietyaardvark · 15/09/2024 07:53

I just bought a Seasalt Janelle. The hood is removeable. I'll get a wool coat for wearing to the office when the weather allows but if it's really awful then I'll have to live with being a bit less smart.

The lands end squall coat is brilliant. Worn every day for dog walks once the cold kicks in and has definitely kept me dry.
I'd argue with the 'stylish' tag though - it's a nice looking yet v practical coat. I can't escape the feeling that I look a bit like Arsene Venger in mine.

OllyBJolly · 15/09/2024 09:07

Seriously tempted by the Hobbs coat. Gorgeous and the Merlot colour is fab.

The Squall coat looks more sensible (and considerably less spendy!) Arsene Wenger! That made me chuckle @SparrowFeet !

Great ideas on this thread!

BatFacedGirlll · 15/09/2024 09:12

I have a million coats (not particularly an exaggeration!) and my current go to is an Isabel Marant wool cocoon coat which I picked up for a good price from Vinted

minipie · 15/09/2024 14:16

Oh that Monsoon one is interesting - puffer type fabric but styled like a belted wool coat.

I don’t love that one but would like to see some more of that kind of cross over between the different types of coat. For example more wool coats with hoods please (not just duffel style).

I would LOVE a Rainsisters coat. I intend to get one as I can afford it but even for me the price tag is ridiculous for what it is.

I am shocked that not a single Amazon company (who copy absolutely everything popular) haven't started making more affordable dupes of these, or even just prettier rain coats than the boxy or puffy or waxy things women are left with. Everyone deserves to look nice in a rain jacket (and I have yet to find a single one that is pretty and feminine outside of RS), not just the well paid and well off.

drspouse · 15/09/2024 18:09

I couldn't wear a Rainsisters coat! I'm too short and don't wear flared things so I don't look any shorter.

SpiderPlanter · 15/09/2024 18:43

VenusClapTrap · 14/09/2024 10:45

I don’t think puffa coats can ever look stylish. The sleeping bag vibe is too strong. I agree with pp you need a good quality, lined, wool coat. Extra layer underneath and a hat.

This. Puffer style coats are practical but not smart or stylish at all.

Look for a long, nicely fitting wool coat.

DodoTired · 15/09/2024 19:10

Didrikson are the best.
They don’t even need to be super thick to be really warm, I wear mine at ski holidays with temperatures below zero
Because of that they look slim and stylish

SpanielPaws · 15/09/2024 19:28

I got a below the knee Barbour puffer jacket from the outlet at Bicester for £79 this summer. It's super warm, and a lovely olive green with a checked lining. I've resisted walking the dogs in it so far and have been trying to keep as a work coat but it's so tempting when I know how snug it is!

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 15/09/2024 19:28

I bought my Didrikson in an independent outdoors type shop. Warmest coat I have ever owned. I bought one for DD - her favourite colour is purple. That year, they did mine in purple - I looked all over Europe online to get her size in purple and found one in a Scottish shop.

StasisMom · 16/09/2024 10:19

I got a Rains puffer coat and I do love it, I got it on sale at Asos last summer.

Edited to add I got it to wear to watch DS's football and rugby in the NW and it is excellent.

popsickle555 · 16/09/2024 20:02

I think it is hard to make the super warm / duvet coat look stylish. I bought a Barbour one last year and I LOVE it but it is not glam but I think as far as those type of coats go it's decent. I can no longer find the exact one but this is close...although mine is green and fully waterproof.

I have a Didrikson. Had it for about 2 years - it's been cleaned in line with instruction and the colour has faded and i've had to re-waterproof it twice.

For the money (£300ish) i'm not impressed
