Warm but stylish winter coat

During lockdown I got used to wearing an enormous, almost ankle length duvet coat and it’s ruined me for all other coats.
I wear a lot of wide legged smart trousers and am looking for a warm coat to wear that is practical (ideally waterproof) but still stylish.

Look on vinted if you don't mind second hand. I got several last year and all were like new. Didn't pay more than £10 for any of them.

Jedstre · 21/09/2024 19:29

A few people mentioning the Janelle from Seasalt. I got one a few years ago and I like the length and it is waterproof but the hood is useless. It just doesn’t fit well around my head (and I really don’t have a big head!) If it’s raining my face gets wet. I’ve got a Didrikson which is years old and a bit scruffy looking but I’d like a longer one. Can anyone recommend a longline Didrikson?

I love my Didriksons Elvy parka which I got on Brand Alley earlier this year.

Op, please share your FAVORITE wide-leg, smart trouser pant/brands with me. Thank you 😊😩

I just go to Uniqlo for everday practical or MaxMara for good stuff

ArthurChristmas22 · 22/09/2024 07:37

Didrikson are fabulous coats Op, last for years and do what they say, ie fully waterproof, very warm and anything in between. They give clear ratings. My whole family have had then for last 10 years however are they smart? Not sure.

TimelyIntervention · 22/09/2024 07:54

I have the seasalt Janelle. I like that it has a nice simple line to it, I do think it looks nice for such a practical coat but I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say it is stylish!

By far my favourite coat is a long wool one I bought on Etsy. Not tailored precisely, but custom in that I could choose the arm length, overall length, colour, waist, etc etc. Having looked there are some gorgeous looking ones on there with hoods exactly as a pp described. But not suitable for a downpour without an umbrella!

I agree the hoods on Seasalt waterproofs are rubbish. I would recommend the Didrikson Leya for length. I picked one up almost half price from New Forest clothing.

I have to say that I agree with the people who said that it's worth investing in a coat--it's the one piece of clothing that you wear again and again and that can last 10+ years if it's good quality!

The main thing is to look at the fabric; wool and cashmere are much nicer looking and waterproof enough for light drizzles.

I love MaxMara coats (the 101801 is particularly great as you can layer underneath but it still looks stylish without being trendy). On the more affordable side check out this Canadian brand (they know a thing or two about winter gear): https://www.soiakyo.com/products/ilana?variant=43348176535746

They even have puffers that are more "tailored" looking: https://www.soiakyo.com/products/lita-v?variant=44583870857410

That wool coat is stunning. I wonder if the bib can be removed.

The Land’s End Squall coat is what we all wear up here in the Highlands. One neighbour bought it, lots of us oohed and aahed, then another bought one, and so on and so on. Never had as many compliments and people asking where it’s from for any other clothing!

The red version reminds me of this, sorry!

I love the look of this wool winter coat, but it might not be the style you are looking for. Unlined, so no horrible polyester, hand washable and waterproof to some extent: mamaowl.net/products/disana-womens-boiled-merino-wool-coat-cassis

Disana wool clothes are made in Germany and the quality is excellent. When my DS was young I got him a child hooded version of this type of coat and it was beautifully made and worn in the rain and cold.

I washed it on the hand wash setting in the washing machine sometimes and it lasted years. I bought it quite oversized for DS1 at first so he wore it for 2 or 3 years and it then got passed on the DS2.

At the end of last winter in a sale I bought myself one of these in the mustard colour as I used to always wish I could find a coat like my DS had and then Disana brought out an adult version so I couldn't resist. I've not worn it yet, but it is beautiful quality: www.cambridgebaby.co.uk/catalog/women/jackets/womens-organic-boiled-merino-wool-parka

diddl · 22/09/2024 15:30

Well I now have a Squall & I like it for what I'll use it for but I wouldn't call it stylish.

Love to know more abut your ankle length duvet coat Op!

Gwenhwyfar · 22/09/2024 20:36

Doesn't exist.
It's one or the other.

I think there are two choices here

1 Buy the most stylish puffer coat or warm lined parka you can find, but accept it will always look like a practical coat

2 Buy a stylish but non waterproof coat (wool fitted coat for example) and accept you will need an umbrella in changeable weather

Wool is not very warm either so it's not just an issue of it not being waterproof. And a non-waterproof coat is a silly choice for UK winters.

This coat in black seems to be on M&S site - reading the reviews it’s warm and maybe could size down.

Cherrytreat · 23/09/2024 18:44

I bought the Seasalt Janelle from vinted and I love it.

I tried it on in the shop and it looked awful, so bought a size smaller and petite and it was totally different on me when it fitted properly, even nips in slightly at the waist.

NotbloodyGivingupYet · 29/09/2024 14:50

Wool IS warm. Some of the "wool" coats are in fact mainly polyester and they definitely are not. I don't really get why sellers get away with describing coats as wool with such low wool content.

I just don't believe a wool coat, even totally wool, is as warm as a good parka. This is basically what both Corbyn and Bernie Sanders got criticised for - wearing actual warm coats rather than smarter pretend warm coats to important outdoor events. They were right imo.

To be honest nothing has been as warm as my down filled hooded coat from fat face. I was gutted when I started sneezing every time I wore it.

minipie · 29/09/2024 18:00

Sheepskin is incredibly warm, if you can find one that doesn’t have Rodney vibes. Not waterproof of course.

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 29/09/2024 18:08

I buy wool coats, and I don’t recall ever having one as warm as my Didrikson parka!
