With just under 3 months to go until 1 December, there are some big decisions to be made! Thread to discuss advent calendars while we wait for more content revelations and release dates.

Does anyone know if Boots are doing the premium one this year? I've only seen the No 7 advertised.

It was released today? The li k didn’t seem to work but it is 2 pages back or Beauty Detective and Beauty Calendars have the spoiler

Thanks @virgocatlover @MrsBnow12

It's not on the Irish site yet but it was later than the UK one last year so will presumably turn up soon.

virgocatlover · 10/09/2024 18:53

I'm getting a bit 'panicked' as they've almost all been announced and I still haven't decided! None of them have immediately grabbed me, and even the trusty M&S is poor (for me anyway) this year. My favourite so far is JL but I think it's slightly over priced.

Im hoping for some good discounts as the weeks /months go on. I could be tempted by some others if their price dropped .

JudgeBurrito · 10/09/2024 18:56

@virgocatlover I think JL is excellent but agree slightly overpriced. I bet it's been overpriced on purpose so they can offer discounts to rewards members etc.

IlovePond · 10/09/2024 18:59

I like the JL apart from the three retinol products, which rule it out for me.

I am really disappointed by M&S. Looked at it again and disliked it even more second time around 🙀

virgocatlover · 10/09/2024 19:02

@IlovePond I agree. The leg and foot spray is the wtf product for me

In the meantime, I have been making a concerted effort to use my existing stash/horde. In the shower today, I went wild: Face scrub, body scrub, aromatherapy oil, leave in hair oil and body cream. If I’d been doing this all year, I wouldn’t have so much stuff left and would feel better about splurging!

On the plus side, I now smell nice.

IlovePond · 10/09/2024 19:03

😹indeed @virgocatlover indeed!

Fedupandstressed · 10/09/2024 19:06

I just got the Boots one. Haven't looked at the contents this time Just happy to have got one as I haven't been impressed by the £200+ ones this year.

Housewife2010 · 10/09/2024 19:20

I have found this to be a very disappointing year for ACs. I know that after about 15 years of them, we can get very spoilt. I was so excited by the early Liberty ones and now the sizes look very small! I was still impressed by a few last year and bought several during 2022's fabulous AC offer/sale year. Apart from Space NK & F&M, I haven't been interested in any others this year. Possibly Sephora or JL if there was a very good discount.

I think the problem is there are too many repeats. Some brands put the same product forward all the time.

@Isabelle70 I can’t believe Harrods have cancelled your order again. I finally got mine on on Sunday . It is very good so maybe fourth time lucky? or just accept it’s not meant to be and buy SpaceNk instead!

Branster · 10/09/2024 20:35

Isabelle70 · 10/09/2024 17:15

I don't know what's going on with Harrods as I have had a 3rd email confirming my 3rd Fragrance calendar has been cancelled!

Try a different email address?!
How annoying for you! I do hope you manage to get one.

Did you manage to speak to them?

OchonAgusOchonOh · 10/09/2024 20:45

So on the positive side of the Boots one out today, there is no black eye liner or mascara. On the negative side, there are 9 DoDs, although 2 of those (the lipsticks) are because I have too many already rather than I dislike the colours.Setting spray is the same - I have several and always forget to use them. The same one was in last year's I think.

Brow gel is even worse than black eyeliner to me and I haven't been in to body sprays since my Impulse days. The liquid blush is also a definite no as is the bronzer and the eye masks.

Housewife2010 · 10/09/2024 20:48

I watched Random Lifestyle Blog's listing of the Boots AC contents today. I found myself saying "no" out loud to nearly everything.

I think it's because we've been bombarded with beauty stuff over the past few years. Not just advent calendars but also non stop beauty boxes and 'edits' throughout the year. Everybody has too much stuff and so is getting more and more picky about they buy.

It must be a tough market for beauty brands - esp. those that don't do calendars.

That is true but there is also a lot of repetition which gets boring. The only one I got is H&B and its main attraction is the fact it is mainly new stuff and there is no make up. The only DoD is the bath salts.

AprilLady · 10/09/2024 21:35

So I’ve finally updated my spreadsheet - includes all the luxury multi-brand calendars that have been announced. I looked at LF, but none of the other sub £100 calendars.

My methodology isn’t at all perfect (@BakeOffRewatch was right to say that the counts of products can be misleading as they don’t take size into account) but it has been helpful.

Conclusion is that most offer “value” in the sense that if you bought the calendar, disaggregated and sold it all on Vinted/Ebay you’d probably get between 1.5 and 2 times what you paid. But the value to me - looking at what I really like and will use - does vary a lot.

Having now worked through the lot, one observation is that the contents of the calendars are actually a lot more diverse than in previous years. There are very few products that appear in multiple calendars - some still have AB rich cream, quite a few have AA bath oils and Neom candles, and quite a few have one of the Sol de Janeiro perfume mists, but other than that they are (mostly) different. And different content to last year - for example, not a single CT eyeshadow palette, whereas in the past there have been quite a few.

As expected, Harrods and Space NK are good for me. Sephora and Next are also decent. I was surprised that Niche beauty came out well - I think if I was paying the euro price (299 euros, so roughly £250) I’d be very tempted.

@OchonAgusOchonOh I assume you would pay the euro price for Niche Beauty - may be worth a look?

I haven't seen that one. I will have a look. Thank you.

AprilLady · 10/09/2024 21:39

And a final point to add: I am definitely not the target market for Latest in Beauty this year, which is decidedly aimed at much younger women. For example, the Medik8 retinal is No 1, the very weakest version so of no use to middle aged women like me. With the £25 off it’s not bad value though, so could be one to consider for older teens or DDs in their twenties.

IlovePond · 10/09/2024 21:44

That’s such an impressive spreadsheet @AprilLady - thanks for sharing!
