How many dresses do you have?

I met up with an old friend a few weeks ago for a lunch in John Lewis. We got onto the subject of how many dresses we possess in our wardrobe. My friend said she thought she owned about 8. I was shocked and felt I owned around 30 dresses minimum.

We both went home and counted up our dresses. I had 40 dresses and my friend just 20. So we were both inaccurate. 2 I haven't even worn yet!

I felt so guilty I donated 8 dresses to charity toute suite! My friend has never been that materialistic or shallow despite earning a handsome salary (60k) and she said she wd get rid of a few.

How many dresses do you all possess out of interest? I now have 32 hanging in my wardrobe....! How many is too many?

50 plus in current use - but I don’t wear much else in summer
Probably similar amount that don’t fit at the moment
Autumn winter dresses guessing another 20-30, as also wear jeans/trousers and jumpers

Lj8893 · 24/08/2024 09:26

I reckon I own more than 40 but only wear about 10 of them!
However, I don’t own any jeans and the only trousers I have are gym leggings and shorts. Same for tops, gym wear or basic vest tops to wear under some dresses.
I basically only wear dresses!

I used to never wear dresses. I thought they were fussy. How wrong I was. They're so easy to wear and it looks so effortlessly nicely dressed.

I'm also at about 30. I've recently bought slips so that I can wear them in cooler weather without them climbing up my tights.

About a 3rd of them are more for work, and I have to be careful not to buy any more as I'll be retiring before these dresses do.

Although I don't own any clothes that aren't comfortable, dresses are the most comfortable.

I just counted out of curiosity and it's 34 but I only have my summer dresses out atm. I have less winter dresses so maybe another 10 or so packed away. I wear dresses a lot when it's warmer as I find them more comfortable. Many are secondhand.

I just counted because of this thread. Expecting about 30.. I have 106 dresses.

I am horrified

Bouliegirl · 28/08/2024 22:47

I should point out that some of them have been with me for about 10 years.

Probably only wear about 10 all year round (cheap t shirt dresses from next or Asda to wear with leggings when wfh) then another 10 that I wear in summer and another 10 in the winter.

i need to put the ones I don’t wear on Vinted or olio

I have about 50.

I’ve just ordered this one. Dresses are my go to as they are flattering on me

I have five that I keep for sentimental reasons (including wedding dress). I don't fit them any more but have happy memories of life in them.

I have two I wear all the time, three I wear occasionally and two I need to throw out as they are now tatty because I wore them so much.

So that's 12. Only five of which I wear.

(Edited because i forgot one.)

That's stunning. I used to wear dresses like that in my twenties all the time. They don't suit my body shape now but I still adore that cut.

Meadowwild · 29/08/2024 08:59

This thread has made me realise I could get a few more dresses, especially for autumn and winter.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/08/2024 09:01

One more then before I saw @WingBingo’s link 😬

stopringingme · 29/08/2024 09:12

One - my Wedding dress from 1996.

Same. I thought over 50 but not as many as 117 🤣
I'm not horrified though. They are more comfortable, look nicer and are easier to put together as outfits. I'm glad I have such a good selection. Work/holiday/long/short.
I use the spare bedroom for them.

I told my husband that I had 106 dresses and he wasn’t surprised. About a third of them are black.

im going to pop them on olio

TheChosenTwo · 01/09/2024 19:03

About 30. I wear a dress most days when I’m not in leggings and a sweatshirt!
Much easier imo to just chuck one on - no need to have to choose 2 separates and consider what might match or go with something else, I’m lazy so prefer the one and done method of dressing 😂

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 01/09/2024 19:18

18, being big busted means I struggle with dresses as I'm smaller on my bottom half. The dresses I do own are all Bravissimo/Pepperberry, except my graduation dress which came from Warehouse and I keep for sentimental reasons (and the fact I was a size 12).

I'm more of a skirt person.

Holidayhell22 · 01/09/2024 19:25

Oh blimey.
I really don’t know. Dd counted 40 years ago. Since then I have sold some and donated some to charity. However I have bought plenty more. 4 this summer off the top of my head.
I would say at least 50.
I have a suitcase full of winter dresses in the loft.
I do wear dresses though. I enjoy wearing dresses.
Dd once said that ‘Mum would wear a dress to go to the supermarket.’ She isn’t wrong.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 24/10/2024 19:46

Six.

LucyLocketLovesPollyPocket · 24/10/2024 19:48
