How many dresses do you have?

I met up with an old friend a few weeks ago for a lunch in John Lewis. We got onto the subject of how many dresses we possess in our wardrobe. My friend said she thought she owned about 8. I was shocked and felt I owned around 30 dresses minimum.

We both went home and counted up our dresses. I had 40 dresses and my friend just 20. So we were both inaccurate. 2 I haven't even worn yet!

I felt so guilty I donated 8 dresses to charity toute suite! My friend has never been that materialistic or shallow despite earning a handsome salary (60k) and she said she wd get rid of a few.

How many dresses do you all possess out of interest? I now have 32 hanging in my wardrobe....! How many is too many?

About 25 if you count long tunics. Both summer and winter, maxi and midi,

Two pairs of leggings (one on, one in the wash), two pairs of jeans (ditto), 6 t-shirts, two cardigans. And that's my lot.

ShowOfHands · 22/08/2024 10:31

I only have summer clothes out at the moment. Just been and counted and have 27. I wear them all. Lots I made myself, most from charity shops.

I probably have another 12 winter dresses. I tend to wear dresses to work so they are regularly worn.

In comparison, I own one pair of jeans and almost never wear them.

Enko · 22/08/2024 10:33

Just counted 40 exactly I wear them all

Purplecatshopaholic · 22/08/2024 10:37

A lot. Too many to count. But I do wear dresses most of the time. You need short, midi, maxi, etc, some for work, some casual, etc etc. I’m about to sell a stack of them soon as I have numerous I never wear. But that will just mean I buy more, lol.
Edit - a quick check shows 38 in my mainly-work wardrobe. There’s two other wardrobes I haven’t time to check just now. But having had a clear out recently (hence the stack to sell/donate), I wear all of them.

eggandchip · 22/08/2024 10:52

None i dont own skirts or a dress.

Sandwichgen · 22/08/2024 10:59

I daren’t go there.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 22/08/2024 11:04

I’m going to guess 30 - 40 which is too many- many are too tight and collecting dust. Time for a big clear out!

henlake7 · 22/08/2024 11:07

I have 28, which sounds about average but at the beginning of the year I only had 2 I never wore.....then I dieted down to a size 10, discovered Vinted and now the numbers are rapidly rising!😃
I seem to have collected everything from floaty summer numbers to jumper dresses, with lots of shirt dresses as I find them really flattering. Only thing I dont have a lot of is flowery dresses, I prefer bold or quirky prints.

TBH I also have a decent amount of trousers, jeans and skirts! I alternate depending on how I feel and the weather (its jeans today as its colder and windy!).

longdistanceclaraclara · 22/08/2024 11:12

If we are including all dresses eg work, summer, winter, wedding guest outfits I'd hazard a guess around 40. Most of the wedding guest ones haven't seen the light of day for about ten years. I really need to have a clear out.

twentysevendresses · 22/08/2024 11:26

Very many 🫣

To be fair though, I don't wear trousers or skirts as I just don't suit them, so I'd say 85% of my clothing is made up of frocks 🥰

I do have one pair of jeans and some t-shirts/blouses that I can wear with them - but I rarely wear them 🤷‍♀️

I also have some sports gear...I don't do sports but have to wear my 'PE Kit' when it's PE day for my class - I look and feel ridiculous 🤦‍♀️

StoatofDisarray · 22/08/2024 11:32

One, plus a skirt and top combo. They're for summer holiday wear. I don't wear them otherwise.

Kaleidoscope101 · 22/08/2024 11:38

I guessed 10, it's actually 25 🙈.
Includes 3 formal dresses that would actually only be suitable for special events.

Augustus40 · 22/08/2024 12:15

An interesting range of answers. I don't feel quite so guilty now.

DoublePeonies · 22/08/2024 12:17

I'd guess 3.

Some of you have more dresses than I have dresses, skirts, trousers & shorts combined! I now feel justified that I sometimes feel I have nothing to wear!! Not that I'll be going shopping soon. It's a task I detest, and truly saved for when I literally have nothing to wear!

halava · 22/08/2024 12:24

I have eight dresses. Three Summer dresses for hols, Four nice ones for special occasions (two Autumn/Winter and two Summer), and one funeral dress - I'm older now and more of my peers and friends' parents are going home sadly.

I am not a dress person, so will only wear when necessary to look scrubbed up or when roasting on holiday.

Trousers are my thing. I have far too many of them!

SingingSands · 22/08/2024 13:09

I'd guess about 40 myself, but I don't feel guilty.

Genuine question: Why did you feel guilty? What makes you feel this way?

SaintHonoria · 22/08/2024 13:22

Yikes! Over two hundred, easily. I do have quite a lot of vintage clothing and everything is carefully stored and preserved.

Knittedfairies2 · 22/08/2024 13:31

One, which I've never worn. I bought it to attend a wedding which was called off, attempted to wear it to Christening, but I was ill on the day. The third attempt was a Golden Wedding party which was cancelled due to lockdown. My husband calls it 'the dress of doom' and thinks I should hire it out to people who have an event to attend but they don't want to go to it.

I have such an event coming up! I can cover postage!! 😆😆

BatshitCrazyWoman · 22/08/2024 13:36

I would say I have about 40, maybe more. I wear them to work, I don't own any trousers I could wear for work (we have a strict no jeans, no trainers dress code). I also wear them on non-working days - have t-shirt dresses for the summer, knitted dresses for winter. Love my dresses. Also have 4 or 5 skirts I wear to work. No florals, as I don't wear them. No flounces, tiers or puffed sleeves either.

Only have a couple of pairs of jeans though.

Chickydoo · 22/08/2024 14:56

Just counted
I have 37. There's a few that should probably go to the charity shop as I don't wear them anymore. That said I have space for them and I don't want to regret getting rid. I think I will wait a while.
Only have 2 pairs of Jeans but another 15 pairs of trousers.
I have an embarrassing amount of gym leggings and sports wear.

Everlore · 22/08/2024 15:05

I own a frankly obscene number of dresses, so many that I'm embarrassed to name a figure on here! In my defence, I wear nothing but dresses all year round, so I have casual and smart day dresses, casual and smart evening dresses and formal dresses as well as different types of dress for each season. I do not own a pair of trousers. I am usually a very frugal person, dresses are my only real extravagance and, even then, I buy them in the sales and try not to spend more than £20 on one unless it's for something really special. I still feel guilty though!

JustJazzy · 22/08/2024 15:28

4, 3 tea dresses I can wear all year round and 1 fancy dress I bought for a wedding last year. I rarely wear skirts(have 2) or dresses, I do however have a ridiculous amount of jeans, I live in jeans.

UnfriendMe · 22/08/2024 15:29

Probably about 150, ranging from decent high street quality to designer.

cleanasawhistle · 22/08/2024 15:30

I have about 25
