How many dresses do you have?

I met up with an old friend a few weeks ago for a lunch in John Lewis. We got onto the subject of how many dresses we possess in our wardrobe. My friend said she thought she owned about 8. I was shocked and felt I owned around 30 dresses minimum.

We both went home and counted up our dresses. I had 40 dresses and my friend just 20. So we were both inaccurate. 2 I haven't even worn yet!

I felt so guilty I donated 8 dresses to charity toute suite! My friend has never been that materialistic or shallow despite earning a handsome salary (60k) and she said she wd get rid of a few.

How many dresses do you all possess out of interest? I now have 32 hanging in my wardrobe....! How many is too many?

I'm guessing 50+. I was so glad when dresses finally came back into fashion that I've been overbuying ever since! In my defence I have one pair of decent trousers (never worn), probably about 5 pairs of jeans (rarely worn but feel like I should have some jeans for .....?) plus sportswear trousers which don't count of course 😉
I basically live in dresses for work and going out.

lazybrownfox · 22/08/2024 23:50

I have masses but they are in different categories. 1. Dresses which are suitable for summers in the UK eg in the high street 2. Dresses for holidays in hot countries where you still need to be decently dressed out eg shopping or in an urban area and 3. Dresses for holidays in countries that are very much resort wear eg if you were on a Greek island 4. Winter dresses but only 2 of those. The total is probably about 60. I don't wear skirts.

Zow · 22/08/2024 23:51

I have 0 dresses. Had between 12 and 15 from about 17/18 to mid to late 30s -but then just stopped wearing them. Would not be seen dead in a dress now. (age 61.)

I must admit I don't think I have ever met a living soul who has 150 dresses as a pp said they have. Or even 75 as another pp said! Most women I know have maybe a dozen tops. Shock (Many have 5 or 6, and some women have none.)

ForGreyKoala · 23/08/2024 00:16

I have four, one being a pinafore. I have more skirts however, but nothing like 20 or 30, and I don't own any good trousers.

I think I have too many clothes and am constantly having a cull. This thread is an eye opener!!

EveSix · 23/08/2024 00:20

And there was me thinking I was totally overdoing it with 11.
I always feel like I've too many clothes, but looking at some responses to this thread, I think I may just have insufficient storage...

Ruthietuthie · 23/08/2024 00:29

Not many at all.
5 summer sundresses
3 smart work dresses
2 going out dresses

So 10 total. But I don't keep things that I don't love. I am ruthless with decluttering. I would rather have a small number of perfect pieces than lots of stuff I don't really like.

Glamorous24 · 23/08/2024 00:53

I’ve counted up and it’s 31 in total. That includes my wedding dress plus a few formal dresses that have been worn once or not worn for years and I’m holding onto.

i do tend to circulate dresses though, buying and reselling again on Vinted if I’ve worn something for a specific occasion only.

I have a lot of jeans and trousers though, plus a few skirts and jumpsuits for different seasons so I don’t wear dresses a huge amount.

bigTillyMint · 23/08/2024 05:00

No idea, but I reckon about 30. Maybe more.

On the other hand I only have 1 skirt, I think!

ElizaMulvil · 23/08/2024 05:04

5

DrPeculiar · 23/08/2024 05:06

60 plus easily I’d imagine. About 30 for work.

Ten summer dresses non work, ten autumn/winter dresses non work, special occasion dresses.

I might count them out of curiosity!

CharlotteRumpling · 23/08/2024 05:58

Less than 10. I don't have wardrobe space, so I have to be minimalist.

75 was me. Realised rummaging this morning there's at least another 5 I missed.

BigSkies2022 · 23/08/2024 14:36

Blimey, some amazing dress counts here. Are you stylists? YouTube fashion influencers? Where do you keep them all? And do you actually wear each one from one year's end to the other? I find it hard to give all my clothes an outing (I pressed quite a few old friends back into service after losing some weight, and culled some stuff - and I'm a pretty thoroughgoing editor of stuff that is worn out/not working for me any longer - but even so) but would be overwhelmed by some of the choices you must have!

TheRestIsEntertainment · 23/08/2024 15:47

I have a dressing room so space not an issue! Don't think I'm particularly fashionable but I do like having lots of choice and wearing different things all the time.

QueenOfTheHighCs · 23/08/2024 16:10

Erm, I have over 100 just for work! I can go for a few months without repeating. I then have 60-80 home and going out dresses, and about 10 black tie type ones. I have 4 wardrobes! I only own 1 pair of jeans and one other pair of non-exercise trousers though. I bought 75% of the work ones second hand one way or another, and tend to take 30-40 per year to the charity shop.

DrPeculiar · 23/08/2024 16:14

@BigSkies2022 , I’ve got tons of wardrobe space, inherited, but 14 floor to ceiling doors. Two of them are taken up with dresses.

Yes I do wear them all.

Probably a dozen Cos dresses that I’d wear to the office on a regular day each season A/W and S/S. Ten formal fitted dry clean 😤 only work dresses. The rest casual or dressing up/formal dos. I’ve got three really special occasion dresses that I only wear once a year.

A few casual (think White Stuff type thing) velvet washable dresses that I might wear at family Christmas get togethers.

Five linen shirt dresses that I wear on holiday/really hot days.

A few knitted jumper dresses.

Nothing I won’t wear in a year or it would get donated to the YMCA shop.

I rarely wear trousers unless I’m doing something active.

ETA I probably buy six dresses a year/take the same amount to the charity shop.

Oldraver · 23/08/2024 16:49

68, 10 of which are Christmas dresses

AbraAbraCadabra · 23/08/2024 17:39

Why did her owning fewer dresses than you make you feel guilty and that you needed to donate them to charity?

zebranotzeebra · 23/08/2024 19:21

17
Two of these are occasion dresses which I rarely wear and three are currently listed on vinted, hopefully soon to be gone to a new home! Of the remaining 12, 5 are more wintry and I regularly wear them with tights and boots. The other 7 summery ones I would love to wear more but alas I'm in Scotland and it already feels like November...

Edited to correct formatting of numbers

SparklyBlueTop · 23/08/2024 20:08

About 8-10. Mainly summer ones and a couple of winter jumper dresses.

good grief.

Which member of the Royal Family are you ?

Summertimer · 23/08/2024 20:13

About 15, I think. I’m more of a skirt and top wearer in summer, top and trs/jeans in other seasons. That said, summer dresses are useful

Augustus40 · 24/08/2024 05:50

Quite a few of you must enjoy enormous bedrooms with huge fitted double wardrobes to accommodate all your dresses!

My bedroom isn’t enormous, nor is my house, but I have a separate dressing room. Clothes on one side and shoes on the other.

WhatNext24 · 24/08/2024 08:42

I have six:

  • Two work dresses (both LK Bennett)
  • One summer dress (Jigsaw)
  • One low key evening dress (Jigsaw)
  • One cocktail dress (some Italian brand from the Net a Porter sale)
  • One long evening gown (ditto)

I bought the cocktail dress recently despite not having been to the type of event that requires one for years. It was lovely, classic, and a decent price, and I hate to be invited to something that requires evening wear and then be madly dashing around to find a dress.

Now that I look at it, dresses are one area where I never overbuy. I really liked my 'curated' dresses wardrobe! Four of them are the same colour though 😂
