How many dresses do you have?

I met up with an old friend a few weeks ago for a lunch in John Lewis. We got onto the subject of how many dresses we possess in our wardrobe. My friend said she thought she owned about 8. I was shocked and felt I owned around 30 dresses minimum.

We both went home and counted up our dresses. I had 40 dresses and my friend just 20. So we were both inaccurate. 2 I haven't even worn yet!

I felt so guilty I donated 8 dresses to charity toute suite! My friend has never been that materialistic or shallow despite earning a handsome salary (60k) and she said she wd get rid of a few.

How many dresses do you all possess out of interest? I now have 32 hanging in my wardrobe....! How many is too many?

Two sun dresses, which only get worn on holidays to somewhere hot!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/08/2024 16:04

No idea- at least 50, probably more. I wear dresses all the time, very occasionally skirts. I don't own jeans, trousers or jumpsuits.

I wear a dress almost every day in the summer. Not so often in winter, but still have a fair few warmer styles. I’m not counting though!

ilikeeggs · 22/08/2024 16:38

I just counted and have 25 which is a lot more than I thought! I almost always wear a dress to wear to work though.

Partylikeits1985 · 22/08/2024 17:09

I think about 10

HideTheCroissants · 22/08/2024 17:23

I’m going to guess….. 12 plus 2 evening dresses….

Now I’m going to go up and count…. bear with……

Okay so it turns out I have 20 that I wear for work etc., 2 “fancy dress” (50s and 20s theme) and 2 evening dresses….

Is that too many?

2 MaxMara cool wool winter/autumn ones - 10-12 years old.
1 MaxMara summer one - actually, so old now that it's very much a gardening dress. But it was a great thing in its day!
2 DVF wrap numbers. About 15 years old. I probably only really wear one of them now, and that usually over trousers, but the other was my wedding dress, so I keep it for sentiment.
1 COS cotton billowy shirt dress - summer with bare legs; autumn/spring with tights and a skinny jumper underneath. Going into year 5/6 and doing well.
1 Ganni seersucker dress, bought because I thought it was cotton, turns out it is 40% plastic, so I wear it with diminishing pleasure and it's not going to last well. Won't buy from them again.

So 7 dresses, 6 of which are successes.

I haven't worn a dress for 3 years, the last time was for my father's funeral, that black dress is the only one I own.
Even at my son's wedding I didn't wear a dress, I wore trousers and a Bombshell coat and hat.

Probably about 150, ranging from decent high street quality to designer.

Wow. Think you win The Most Dresses award here!

Quickly counting in my head 25ish I reckon

Stardustmoon · 22/08/2024 18:04

About 45. I love dresses!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 22/08/2024 18:36

Off the top of my head without seeing wardrobe, I'm at 75.

Bilbonne · 22/08/2024 18:48

About 8 but I don't wear dresses such a lot

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 22/08/2024 19:05

12, all plain block colours, as I like to wear colour in a jacket / accessories.

Ineffable23 · 22/08/2024 19:27

I can think of north of thirty in my head without looking so I am going to guess at least 50. I am only counting ones that fit as I have ones for when I am different sizes boxes up in the loft.

I will go and count ...51

Pretty pleased with my estimation there.

I literally live in dresses so that seems okay to me!

Howyoualldoworkme · 22/08/2024 19:50

I only wear dresses and I think I must have about 30. I'm not sure as I rotate them seasonally so the winter/autumn ones are packed away at the moment.
Every year, when I buy any new, I take the same amount to a charity shop.
I've got favourites of course that come out every year 🙂

HarpyBirthday · 22/08/2024 20:41

2 but one's a dressing up dress for Halloween that I got in a charity shop.
I don't like dresses.

HarpyBirthday · 22/08/2024 20:43

If I have to buy them for a do I will ebay them straight after as in the past they have sat in my wardrobe becoming out of date.

PlumPeony · 22/08/2024 21:59

I have 3 that I sometimes use (one for summer, one for weddings, one for fancy winter parties). Then a few that I might take for summer holidays.

Josette77 · 22/08/2024 22:01

50?

S0CKPUPPET · 22/08/2024 22:08

I had to go and count, I have 25 spring / summer dresses hanging in my wardrobe right now. And about another 15 winter and 5 occasion dresses that are packed away.

Im shocked at how many I have but in fairness they are all high street purchases ( not high end brands ) and have been acquired over about 10 years.

Ive bought 4 this year - 2 very cheap from Uniqlo and 2 linen ones from Cos sale .

halfthesun · 22/08/2024 23:05

About 50 or so ... I'm 52 years. I have always been a size 10 and thus have kept most of my dresses. So easy to wear - dress up or down ... most very simple and classic Daffodil

puppyparent · 22/08/2024 23:10

I have maybe 6-8 (including my wedding dress!). Each one has only been worn 1-2 times. It's awful! I buy dresses for specific formal occasions but never wear them in day-to-day life. So they just hang there mostly in mint condition.

PeachyKeane · 22/08/2024 23:16

Absolutely loads, but I get all mine from boot sales, rarely pay more than £5 for them. Must have perhaps 50 or 60 at a guess 🤔
