"Menopausal blonde" hair - why do women do it?

Just been to lunch with a group of friends aged late fifties to early sixties whom I've known for decades. Of course we're all looking older, but none of us are the type of people who have Botox/fillers/tweakments, but we all wear some make up and at various times most have dyed their hair.
I'm a natural redhead but started to go grey in my thirties and then dyed my hair for 25 years till COVID when I grew it out and stayed white/grey, it looks fine and better than dyed red hair with an older face.
Several of the group have dark hair, brown eyes and olivey skin. All of them, as they got into their fifties, started dyeing their hair a yellowy blonde. Without fail it looks awful, it just doesn't suit their skin tones at all. They would look better if they just let the grey come through, or have it dyed a lighter brown.
I see so many women of a certain age with this generic blonde, on people that aren't naturally blonde it invariably looks wrong, why do they do it?

Easier to deal with the grey? If you are going to do it though you need the right shade for your skin tone.

ActualChips · 20/08/2024 16:19

Because they want to. Ageing is hard.

Garlicfest · 20/08/2024 16:19

Yes - because grey regrowth shows immediately on hair dyed a darker colour.

Wafflefudge · 20/08/2024 16:21

It's because if you have dark hair you'd need to dye it all the time whilst greys blend more with the blond.
It's not my taste but obviously they like it.

Overtheatlantic · 20/08/2024 16:22

It can be incredibly difficult to figure out what to do when your hair and skin tone change and sometimes you don’t even realise it’s changed.

Littlebluebird123 · 20/08/2024 16:23

It was recommended by my hairdresser to ease the grey regrowth. Dying it to my natural colour is too dark so the contrast is stark. It's important to get the right shade of blonde though. Perhaps they don't realise or their clothing choices are washing them out?

StormingNorman · 20/08/2024 16:24

Grey blending.

EternallyIrked · 20/08/2024 16:25

I echo the above, it's because of the greys.

I'm 37 and started going grey at 17 years old. In the last two years, keeping up with the greys has become almost unmanageable.
I suit my hair darker but went to a coppery red to lessen the maintenance. I don't like it very much but sadly, it's the alternative to dyeing my hair at home every 2 or 3 weeks. With the lighter colour, I can stretch it to 4 or s weeks.

I also tried going to salons, in the hope the dye was a better quality and would last longer.. but nope.

A purple toner would help, yellow blonde is 😳

MrsTerryPratchett · 20/08/2024 16:26

Blonde is traditionally associated with youth. Because hair tends to darken over time.

Littleducksallinarow · 20/08/2024 16:27

I think it's easy to criticise others. Have you asked them what they think of your style? Sometimes others see faults that we don't recognise in ourselves. It would either help you to be less critical of others, or perhaps help you to get some tips too.

Easier to blend in greys - they clearly aren't ready to go grey yet as it can be terribly aging. I can't quite believe you need to ask this.

My dd has naturally yellow blonde hair. It's gorgeous!

Shiningout · 20/08/2024 16:31

I think it's obvious it blends with grey better. I'm only 30 and I have very dark hair and my greys are showing through very clearly

ChanelBoucle · 20/08/2024 16:32

Hair goes lighter as we age. I had dark brown hair when young and now naturally have light ash brown / grey. I have a blonde high lift put through it along with ash tones to disguise the grey.

Also, dark hair can look very severe on a Caucasian older face.

BruFord · 20/08/2024 16:33

Yes, it’s grey blending. I’m naturally dark blond and my hair’s turning white rather than grey-my Dad’s hair did the same. I have it dyed my natural colour and the white strands blend fairly well.

I’ve tried darker shades and the white was obvious after three weeks. Your friends are trying to avoid constantly touching up their roots and temples!

Lovelysummerdays · 20/08/2024 16:35

I am gutted by this thread I was quite looking forward to having a blonde phase. I’m naturally dark and pale and had thought baby lights/ highlights to soften the grey as it comes through.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 20/08/2024 16:35

Do they all go to the same hairdresser?

I'm exactly the same. Started going grey while I was at uni and now at 37 it's getting ridiculous. Do you do the light colour at home or at a salon?

Currently I'm using a semi permanent medium brown at home...
I was considering a pixie cut to make dying it easier but that in itself needs a lot of maintenance I think

God, don't listen to this thread! Pretty much all the women I know have blonder hair and it looks lovely. "Menopausal blonde" is a really bitchy description.

BigComfyTracksuit · 20/08/2024 16:37

Maybe they think your hair looks shit.

Beautiful3 · 20/08/2024 16:37

It's because the grey roots blend better with blonde hair.

If you haven't already, try root sprays. My hair is quite dark but I can't be bothered dyeing it every 4 weeks. A root spray can give you a few extra weeks before having to dye it again.

henlake7 · 20/08/2024 16:38

Could be worse....I know a lady who is in her 70s and dyes her hair jet black....it fools absolutely no-one!

I feel judged though. This is me!😄TBF I dye mine a couple of shades lighter then my mousey dark blonde and it has become a lovely bright blonde instead (pretty much the colour of my early twenties).
Given that Ive also turned the clock back by losing so much weight (now weigh what I did in late teens!) Im going to go with it!! (and ignore my odd looking black eyebrows, Ive always had black eyebrows and blonde hair!😙).
