"Menopausal blonde" hair - why do women do it?

Just been to lunch with a group of friends aged late fifties to early sixties whom I've known for decades. Of course we're all looking older, but none of us are the type of people who have Botox/fillers/tweakments, but we all wear some make up and at various times most have dyed their hair.
I'm a natural redhead but started to go grey in my thirties and then dyed my hair for 25 years till COVID when I grew it out and stayed white/grey, it looks fine and better than dyed red hair with an older face.
Several of the group have dark hair, brown eyes and olivey skin. All of them, as they got into their fifties, started dyeing their hair a yellowy blonde. Without fail it looks awful, it just doesn't suit their skin tones at all. They would look better if they just let the grey come through, or have it dyed a lighter brown.
I see so many women of a certain age with this generic blonde, on people that aren't naturally blonde it invariably looks wrong, why do they do it?

Why do they do it?

I'm guessing it's because they don't give a shiny shite about your opinion.

Perhaps they think your white/grey hair looks terrible, but they're too polite to say?

Because they want to. Ageing is hard.

its way easier than the option.

BigComfyTracksuit · 20/08/2024 16:37

Maybe they think your hair looks shit.

I hope so. What a snarky thread.

IWishIWasABaller · 20/08/2024 17:34

I'm a natural dark brunette and blonde just does not suit me at all . I'm currently only getting about 2/3 weeks before my grey roots appear. I keep them at bay with root spray which does disguise them but makes the hair sticky unfortunately. I get it done at the hairdresser and it costs approx 80 euro every 5/6 weeks .I'm planning on maybe going completely grey in about 10 years at 50 but I'll see . My husband is going a gorgeous smooth silvery grey evenly dispersed through his hair , mine is a wiry weird colour of grey and seems to be concentrated in patches , typical !

And the inevitable Bob or Pixie cut.
It is part of the 'uniform' like blue denim on 17 year olds.

Ilovegoldies · 20/08/2024 17:37

Because some of us aren't grey all over. I have zebra stripes. I'm not ready to embrace that. Fuck no. Anyone I know who bangs on about going grey usually has full grey coverage.

Ah misogyny bingo card. Keep going I'll have a full house.

PrincessofWells · 20/08/2024 17:40

What a misogynist thread, it's horrendous. Women can look how the hell they want without this judgy crappy stuff.

babyproblems · 20/08/2024 17:41

Agree it’s because blonde is easy when you are grey. I fully intend to do this!!! yoi clearly aren’t a dark brunette op- if you were you’d know you are absolutely stuck with dark hair for YEARS and the only time you can ever play at being blonde is when you go grey!!! Quite frankly I’m looking forward to it. You can’t stay dark when you age really because you end up looking gothic as it looks really severe on an older face. They can change their skin tone with make up etc and also the tone of the hair with violet shampoo etc. I think just live and let live!!! X

I love the look of the stripes - it’s chic and dramatic.

Notellinganyone · 20/08/2024 17:47

I’m 57 and my hair, greys apart, is still the same dark brown as it always was.

SaintHonoria · 20/08/2024 17:47

Why so t you start a chat with your friends about it? They may feel the same but are stuck in the cycle of having it coloured blonde.

Summerhillsquare · 20/08/2024 17:49

Miaow!

Hucklemuckle · 20/08/2024 17:51

Well ain't you nice

whatisforteamum · 20/08/2024 17:53

I lightened my hair yrs ago.
Now 57 I have meno blonde dip dyed turquoise shoulder length hair.
T tried a dark dye decades ago and my natural colour makes me look haggard.
I've never had some many compliments since I went blonde/turquoise.
It makes me smile 😊

Imustgoforarun · 20/08/2024 17:54

Menopausal hair - so ageist. What’s it got to do with you anyway.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/08/2024 17:54

I've watched hundreds of middle aged and older women's makeovers on YouTube and I'd say that about 90pc look better with their hair dyed blonde or at least a lighter colour.

Great?

@ISeriouslyDoubtItwhy not post a selfie?

Klippityklopp · 20/08/2024 17:54

Menopausal blond!
Maybe "all" of your friends are happy with their hair choice, you seem to be the only one with the problem, do your friends know you are so judgemental of them?

MrsCarson · 20/08/2024 17:54

I went blond. My skin and eyes were already pale, but my hair was nearly black. Menopause and changing skin tone has made my natural dark hair make me look very washed out and ill. So blond it is, my grey is patchy not a lovely colour so until it turns to an even silver I'll dye it.

Newgolddream70 · 20/08/2024 17:54

This thread is saying a lot about you, OP! Feel lacking in other areas? 🤔

Flying the bleached flag here and have done since I was 15! 53 now and not stopping anytime soon. 'Menopausal blonde' my arse!!

Purrer · 20/08/2024 17:56

Lovelysummerdays · 20/08/2024 16:35

I am gutted by this thread I was quite looking forward to having a blonde phase. I’m naturally dark and pale and had thought baby lights/ highlights to soften the grey as it comes through.

Don’t let one weirdly judgemental person put you off! I’ve literally never looked at someone and thought ‘oh you’ve got the wrong skin tone/eye colour for that hair shade’ and I’m sure most people are the same.

MonsteraMama · 20/08/2024 17:57

Counter question, why do women insist on judging other women for every fucking thing they do? Does it make you feel better about yourself?

LightDrizzle · 20/08/2024 17:57

As others have said, it’s not just about the problem of regrowth with grey roots, skin tone also changes with age and with caucasian skin very dark hair often looks harsh and ageing unless it’s a very, very good colour job; you have great makeup on, and you hair has volume. If your friends have olive skin it’s probably not so unflattering but it will be expensive and time consuming to avoid a white root stripe.

Two colleagues around the 50 mark recently went blonde, not yellow, after being dark all their lives and it took a few years off them.

eggandchip · 20/08/2024 18:01

I had a 75 year old neighbour that dyed her blond all the time.
Then came lock down she stopped dyeing it and let it go wild she did use a hair dye stripper first.
But i cant explain it the gray made her look younger and so smart.
She had it chopped off very short cut after lock down.
She went from 75 to 50 glow up.
Some can pull it off she did.
