AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

I’ve just had a flash back to a skirt my mum had in the 80s, I need to find a reproduction of it immediately!

It was wool, midi, A line, tartan/check/plaid and it wrapped over and was held with a huge safety pin at about the knee. It wasn’t pleated like a kilt, but it was giving kilt vibes. In my head I can’t quite see the colour, but I think it was green with red or purple? Or it could have been a grey with lilac? I don’t know why I can’t remember. I need to call my mum!

House of Bruar probably has what you are looking for! It won’t be cheap and you will have to take a deep breath first and accept you are shopping in a posh grandma shop.

(I get their catalogues after a previous poster on a S&B petite clothes thread mentioned HofB had cropped cashmere cardigans massively discounted at end of season and sat at the waist of a petite woman, my black one I bought is still going strong 4+ years later and each autumn since I’ve loved looking at their “things to wear to kill the wildlife in the Scottish countryside with some minor royals” range )

@LoobyDoop2 John Lewis has some gorgeous ones in stock, I just fell down a bit of a coat hole on the app. 😂

JudgeBurrito · 21/08/2024 15:01

I love them @AllTheDucks , square-toed flats and brown both seem to be trends so they're ideal. A little reminiscent of the Prada mules. It's really wet where I live so I wouldn't get the wear out of them unfortunately. Could be tempted by the black leather though, or pink for spring maybe.

JaneJeffer · 21/08/2024 15:35

I can't walk in really flat shoes any more. Love the colour of them @AllTheDucks but also live in a place where the material wouldn't suit the weather.

Because of this thread I keep thinking of a jacket I gave to the charity shop which would be perfect now Angry

I have one of these in charcoal from Celtic and Co, which I haven't worn for 2 years as didn't look right. Are we saying this is in again?

I bought a tartan skirt from Brora last winter - the one Claudia wore on Traitors but in a different colourway. Might be worth a look when we get a bit more into the season (not much doing on their website at the moment).

Apologies for being a smug git, but I nabbed this exact same skirt for a bargain price on eBay last year. It is absolutely beautiful, moss green and a misty purple. But I didn't wear it much - too much for Sainsbo's, and my friends are definitely not into vintage, so I feel a bit out of step if I wear my tweedery with them.
However, it is too beautiful to hide away. I shall style it out this year!

That is very nice actually.

I bought this lovely bag at the beginning of the year - really perfect for autumn. My favourite outfit with it was an olive green Arket jumper, brown Hush cords, and the brown/wine Adidas SL72 trainers, so I feel like I was ahead of the curve colour-wise.

AW 24, what’s in style?
MotherWol · 24/08/2024 09:06

Im not sure I can pull off the Claudia W in The Traitors look, so this AW might not be for me! I started on my shopping list and it’s a bit costly because I need a couple of coats, so far I’m after:

  • Hobbs black trench coat
  • Uniqlo t-shirts
  • new straight jeans (Levi’s rib cage?)
  • Whistles wool wrap coat or &other stories wool coat
  • M&S beige cashmere jumper

I’ve spent relatively little on clothes so far this year, but I don’t have an office-appropriate winter coat so that’ll be a big outlay, and my jeans don’t fit. Frankly if AW24 is tending towards gothic hunting lodge style that’ll keep me out of the shops which is probably a good thing!

ErnestClementine · 24/08/2024 21:03

I was feeling uninspired about my cold weather clothes and didn't know how to start upgrading. Dressing like I'm solving crimes in Copenhagen is an excellent steer - and one that fits with my lifestyle (although not a detective or danish) and age.

GettingStuffed · 25/08/2024 10:49

I was watching a YouTube video this morning and what I took from it was that jeans are looser, not necessarily wide but even skinnies should not touch the skin all the way down.
For shoes both pointed and rounded square toes and heels are coming back. Blazer back to fitted.

Burgundy is the in colour.

Denim jackets are out in the standard shape but denim bomber jackets are a thing.

Finally leopard skin is back.

It's trend suggestions not government pandemic rules. Do you take everything so seriously?

InTheBleakMidsummer · 25/08/2024 11:35

Not at all! But any fool can post a You Tube video - so I would want to know whether the person concerned was a clothing / fashion expert, or not.

How is that odd?

Princessfluffy · 25/08/2024 15:18

Trends that I can get on board with are
Bright red
Fake fur
Green
Burgundy
Plaid
Cardigans
Leopard print

I'm personally going to be exploring headgear this winter- headbands, Alice bands, head scarves balaclavas and hats. Will probs be leading this trend rather than following 😝

Balaclavas??

Izzynohopanda · 25/08/2024 17:46

@GettingStuffed

”Finally leopard skin is back.’

Wal k through a large M and S yesterday and noticed a huge display incorporating leopard skin. Remember thinking haven’t seen it thus strong for ages as a dominant feature rather than accent.

Izzynohopanda · 25/08/2024 17:49

Also noticed 80s style hair bows. Haven’t really seen them since, well, the eighties, or in kids.
