AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

I agree @JudgeBurrito it’s just when we can rewear what we already love and look a bit more current. I bought this onehundredstars.co.uk/products/midi-kimono-stork-burgundy?_pos=6&_sid=5c8370acc&_ss=r in the Winter sales way before the colour trends for this winter came out and will thoroughly enjoy being my best Edwardian self.

Love greens and burgundy. Sick of big baggy jeans they just add more width to me!

CobaltQueen · 19/08/2024 18:40

I am 39 but don't want to dress like a sensible older lady. It's a tricky age I think between late thirties and early forties. I have a few slogan tops and jumpers which I'm not sure I am the right age for anymore and that I look silly in them.

myladyjane · 20/08/2024 05:33

I am here for the brown and leopard but burgundy and olive are 2 of the very worst colours for me. I shall have to aim for a kind of tonal brown look I think.

What about bright red? I noticed quite a bit around recently and was hoping that may continue as I do need something bright (am a 'spring' colour wise who can manage a jewel tone easier than a muted warm colour).

MorrisZapp · 19/08/2024 11:20

Burgundy is a beautiful autumn choice for those of us who look dreadful in bright red. And no, there isn't a red lipstick for everyone.

I think everyone who wants to can wear red lipstick but you need to look at lipstick in the broadest sense.

I wear a red tint or stain or matte sheer like VioletteFR Bisou balm or glossier Generation G but I don't wear an opaque solid intense red lipstick

----What shoes have people spotted? I keep seeing Margaret Thatcher/ queen mum shoes- small block heel, round toe- and can see how it might look retro on 20somethings (like 50s/,granny chic I rocked in my 20s), but I think it might make me look like my nan.

Wheelbarrowracer · 20/08/2024 08:51

Oh those shoes are a bit sensible Nan shoes.

Decaffeinatedplease · 20/08/2024 09:06

It's one of the ironies of life that only the young can truly rock granny chic. The nearer you are to granny age, the harder it is to carry that look off- although I wear block heel (very low) shoes anyway, I have felt a bit like the Queen on occasion!

Decaffeinatedplease · 20/08/2024 09:08

I always like the idea of burgundy or olive, but they always look sludgy on me, see khaki as well. Beige and cream or navy and black work better.

I made the mistake of googling red coats, thinking I might find a dark red one on Vinted. My eyes!

OKbutwhyplease · 20/08/2024 09:15

Oh god no please tell me every jacket I like this autumn winter won't be cropped or a Mac?!
It's like the dress thing that every time I go oooh lovely dress and it's bleeding collettes. Noooo!!
Happy with the colours.
Off to dust down the tweed look blazer that lives in my boot of my car for when I need a throw on -- it's having a hayday whoop.

Decaffeinatedplease · 20/08/2024 09:17

@OKbutwhyplease cropped and Macs are chilly, I'm going to stick with long wool coats myself, and was wearing the tweedy/wool blazer last year and got lots of compliments, am carrying that on as well! The Claudia Winkleman look can't be over yet...

Decaffeinatedplease · 20/08/2024 09:19

As for long boots, I wore them last year, either ahead of the trend, or deeply unfashionable, long flattish ones with midi or even mini dresses (fairly high neck though). Long wool coat on the top. Felt fine. I think I might be doing fashion wrong, I think I looked ace!

These.

It's a no from me on those.

I don't wear heels anymore anyway - I always feel like a giraffe, even when they're low. I just can't walk well in them.

I have a pair of patent burgundy Russell & Bromley loafers, though, they'll do.

I suspect whoever has designed them wasn't alive when Saturday morning town centres were the natural territory of legions of grannies in macs, pleated skirts, pouffy blow dries, shopping bags and shoes like these.

Or, more likely, they saw an old picture of exactly that and—being a terrible hipster fashion person—thought, "totally fucking Mexico".

JudgeBurrito · 19/08/2024 11:35

@BangingOn Exactly. I got a lovely pair of knee high kitten heeled boots about this time last year from Zara actually. I also got a nice burgundy shoulder bag about 5 years ago but have barely used it what with covid (wasn't going anywhere worth using a nice bag) and then smaller crossbody bags being more on trend. It just didn't look right. I'll probably bring it out this winter, as it'll look more fitting given the burgundy trend.

You said to me

"I don't think anyone is avoiding wearing something because someone hasn't said it's okay to wear"

yet here you are stating that very thing 😂

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/08/2024 09:38

Must say, having a busted shoulder at the mo and long hair that leans into the “witch of the wilds” when left to air dry, I’m warming to the idea of going for a regular pouffy blow dry.

i also have a pretty fabulous Mac that’s about 5 years old now. And there’s a couple of pleated skirts in my wardrobe from when we were doing that a couple of years back. I’m going to have to hold the line against those shoes aren’t I?

Nope, it's not about whether someone has said it's 'okay to wear' or not. It's about choosing items from my wardrobe that I want to wear. I didn't want to use the shoulder bag recently as I felt it made me look like I wasn't aware of current trends, but I use a backpack for work. Nobody has said it's not okay to wear a shoulder bag, and certainly nobody would think my NHS-issue backpack is the height of fashion. I choose to use it because it's practical. Not sure if you're deliberately misunderstanding, or if the distinction is too subtle for you.

But do you have the rainproof headscarf? And fluffy polo mints?

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/08/2024 09:50

@Wheelbarrowracer - im sure fashionable types are due to revive the plastic headscarf.

OKbutwhyplease · 20/08/2024 10:37

Hey, what's wrong with my plastic Head Scarf ;)

MorrisZapp · 20/08/2024 11:08

I bumped into a friend yesterday who was wearing a gorgeous battered old oxblood leather satchel, turns out her grandfather made it by hand for her father.

She was delighted to be bang on trend! Beautiful heritage pieces always bring joy but it's just an extra bonus when they manage to look 'intentional' too.

You specifically said on here

" it didn't look right " due to smaller bags being in fashion.

That says you didn't use it because it wasn't deemed fashionable. You will use it now because of the colour which is deemed to be " in"

There is no need to be rude or imply that I am stupid because I picked you up correctly on something you said.
