AW 24, what’s in style?

Any predictions as to what is going to be on trend for 40 somethings this autumn and winter?

I used to live reading style magazines for the new season but haven’t bought one for years!

Wintery pastels or rich jewel tones? Black and white monochromes?

I’m hoping chunky jumpers and comfortable trousers are on the menu!

(ultimately I wear what I want, but I like to feel stylish when I can!)

It's all gone a bit handbags at dawn 👜

A nice thread being turned to handbags at dawn very on trend with MN these days unfortunately.

BangingOn · 20/08/2024 13:40

In the spirit of wearing what I want, irrespective of my age or what’s in fashion, whilst also being conscious of new season trends and looking current 😉I have ordered a few bits from Vinted including a lovely check/tartan/plaid (delete as appropriate depending upon your preferred term) bubble hem Zara skirt and a Me&Em black top with lace neck and cuffs that has slightly gothic Victorian vibes.

I’ve gone full on geek and itemised all of my wardrobe on a spreadsheet to see where the gaps are. All of my winter coats are too big, so I need to get them listed on Vinted and search for replacements, ideally full length and wool.

I am also struggling with shoes, loafers look terrible on me, but may just stick with long boots once it’s too cold for ballet flats.

InTheBleakMidsummer · 20/08/2024 14:05

The skirt sounds excellent, @BangingOn!

My early autumn wardrobe will perforce centre around a huge cable knit cardigan (Marni via The Outnet) and a light brown cotton linen skirt (Margaret Howell via Vestiaire) that really haven’t had enough wearing yet. I have some new-ish tan shoes from Grenson that will be fine for indoor based activities but I’m longing to retrieve last year’s knee high brown boots.

Definitely time for some heavy olive / khaki green cords - I may look for a suit. And a new raincoat.

As always, what I’m most excited about is old and new knitwear, extravagant accessories (mad hats and dark pearls) and the return to deep and smokey winter perfumes.

I'm considering a Cagney and Lacey New York housewife/cop look with midi skirts over boots, collars turned up and a little string of pearls.

Any takers?

BangingOn · 20/08/2024 14:17

@InTheBleakMidsummer mad hats and dark pearls sound incredible!

@MorrisZapp I love midi skirts over boots, very elegant.

I know exactly what you mean and I love this look. Sadly, I can't pull it off myself, I'm too large-framed. Not fat, just strapping and muscular, and I've finally learned that pretty doesn't work on me.

I have the perfect midi skirt in my wardrobe for this (vintage 70s wool plaid), but I've got it listed on Vinted.

henlake7 · 20/08/2024 14:32

Its just nice to find out what is in fashion and realiese you can shop your wardrobe for some of it, isnt it?😀

I have a lovely oxblood bag that was languishing at the back of the wardrobe and it will finally get its time to shine!
Also really glad I bought a plaid blazer ( which wasnt related to fashion but to me rummaging in my 76 yr old mothers closet, finding a gorgeous plaid blazer hiding away and wanting one!!LOL).

I will also be looking for some nice chonky brogues or loafers as I have lots of dresses for A/W. Usually I cant wear those sort of shoes as my feet blister as soon as look at them but thanks to the 'yoof' todays obsession with wearing socks with everything I have been rocking the 'socks with all footwear' look and having lovely comfy feet.😊

@sausawyee are you at a loose end or something? It’s a fashion thread. Don’t like it? Best option would be to scroll on by.

No I don't want to look like a maths teacher from the 80's

OnlyFrench · 20/08/2024 16:59

@MorrisZapp brillant vidéo, it looks like everything I've ever loved (particularly brown) is back. Now I just need to adapt it for life in a muddy field 😊

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 20/08/2024 19:13

I was in an Autumn mood and got these today from M&S. The black version of the bag was a staple this year so I’m very excited for the green! Leopard dress will be layerable and I will wear all the same wide trousers as last year. I’m not going back to skinnies even if they do come back 🤣

I used to love & wear this look last time around, but now I very rarely wear skirts in winter.

FYI have a reread - it wasn't me who started insulting.

Oh the old “there aren’t fashions for different ages” crap - like teenagers have been buying all the floral midi dresses over the last couple of years or middle aged women have been at the vanguard of the crop top trend.

@Peaceandquietandacuppa I love the green striped shirt.

Theremedy · 21/08/2024 09:49

I’ve just had a flash back to a skirt my mum had in the 80s, I need to find a reproduction of it immediately!

It was wool, midi, A line, tartan/check/plaid and it wrapped over and was held with a huge safety pin at about the knee. It wasn’t pleated like a kilt, but it was giving kilt vibes. In my head I can’t quite see the colour, but I think it was green with red or purple? Or it could have been a grey with lilac? I don’t know why I can’t remember. I need to call my mum!

I love burgundy combined with either hot pink or orange. Autumn colours make by far the best combos.

One thing I really want for A/W is a full length, oversized wool coat- the kind Army officers used to wear. Like Jenna Coleman had in The Jetty, if anyone saw that.

BangingOn · 21/08/2024 10:21

@LoobyDoop2 I am looking for similar. I had a coat along those lines from La Redoute about a decade ago which I want to replace.

I’m now hankering after a Black Watch tartan scarf.
Though I bought a beautiful black paisley scarf and I have a black / bronze Christmas-ey patterned one .
I need to replace my favourite gloves too (black and white houndstooth) they’re really past it now, but I have the matching scarf still.

so I don’t really need the Black Watch one 🤔

LoobyDoop2 · 21/08/2024 10:56

You know, I did actually order that but then got suspicious because the only photos on the site were from the show, so cancelled it.

ClippyMuldoon · 21/08/2024 11:05

How are they making a full length wool coat at that price? Has anyone ordered from there?

WhenWillWanksWildly · 21/08/2024 11:54

Oh no. I didn’t check the credentials before I posted so sorry about that. It just happened to pop up this morning when I was looking for something else.

I saw one somewhere but now I can't remember <helpful>
