Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

Can someone show me what kind of dresses and skirts we’re talking about?

Presumably all have sleeves? And aren’t tight?

I would appreciate photos of all these dresses people are wearing that can accommodate a slip.

Are we talking about the ‘uniform’ of floral maxi dress and white trainers? 😖

Why would the dresses need sleeves? Slips generally have tiny spaghetti straps, certainly narrower than all my bra straps, so any dress that can have a normal bra under can have a dress shape slip. And there are skirt slips too.

Tightness - if you can’t physically fit a slip under, your clothes are too tight for you. If you’re wearing slim fitting dresses and skirts, they’d probably benefit from a slip because the fabric will slide over a slip better and you get fewer rucks and creases as you move. It’s like saying “how can I fit a bra under?”

I wear mine a-line dresses, shirt dresses, sleeved, sleeveless, jersey… Also the occasional floral maxi.

But no one is making you try one…

No need to be horrible!

I thought you were deliberately goading and repeating @Wantitalltogoaway

I apologise.

GettingStuffed · 13/07/2024 22:44

I've bought a couple of dresses that came with their own slip

@Rainyblue you put them in sideways. Along the hem. I use a tiny safety pin (or pins) horizontally, it's never shown for me.

But I see your point!

I am curious about this - can you clarify , a little safety pin on the hem stops static build up ? Not pinned to anything else, just pinned into the hem ? What is this sorcery ?

More science than sorcery- the metal will attract the electrical charge that is static build up.

Pottedflowers · 14/07/2024 01:28

Fabrics are often so crap and thin these days that slips are essential.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 14/07/2024 03:46

I am old but I still wear them where needed. Most skirts I buy are lined but they aren't all so I usually wear one then, and I wear one under my lined white skirt to stop it being see-through.

Not quite the same as a pair of M&S culottes is it?

GoldFrame · 14/07/2024 06:46

I feel quite glam in mine, especially when I’m doing my slap in it. Better than seeing my belly 😃

greengreyblue · 14/07/2024 07:14

I think people are more likely to wear shape wear than a slip.I had some in the 90s when I started work but was always worried about it peeping out under my hem.

WhereAreWeNow · 14/07/2024 07:32

Mine are all quite short and I wear them with longer skirts/dresses so I've never had an issue with them peeping out under the hem.

These are a lot nicer than the plain M and S ones!
The ones on all these links look very shapeless. I wonder where you can get lacy ones like this?

They also look a lot lower so more practical, although they still wouldn’t work with a lot of my dresses.

GoldFrame · 14/07/2024 07:40

They are not shapeless on. They cling a bit so there’s not loads of excess fabric. I feel quite slinky in mine

.i wear a lot of low cut tops and dresses : if they’re the wrong shape neckline I wear a half slip. But I don’t wear them with everything, it depends on the clothing

greengreyblue · 14/07/2024 07:42

@WhereAreWeNow yes that’s true- in the 90s it was above the knee pencil skirts or A line skater skirts.

Doesn't work in my experience though.

borntobequiet · 14/07/2024 08:03

My slips are by Kayser (TBH an old name in lingerie) and have deep lace at the top. They’re cut to skim the body so have a good shape of their own (which is why “slip dresses” became a thing). I got them from the local independent underwear shop, they were no more expensive than those from M&S. As well as being practical, they’re a bit of everyday glam.
Of course I don’t wear them under all dresses as not all dresses need one, but pp is right - if you can’t fit a slip underneath, your dress is too tight.

Google chemise rather than slip and you'll find sexier, lacy ones.

When I lived abroad for a short time as an older teen, I was deeply envious of my friends silk Intimissi slips which were then in vogue. Is Intimissi still about? I think Next used to stock their pure silk underwear, but haven't seen it for a while.

Yes, Intimissimi is still around and still has some nice silk stuff but I couldn't see any slips when I checked recently.

EvelynBeatrice · 14/07/2024 08:30

They have some slips - just checked. In 'lingerie' and ' nightwear' categories

I have some lace ones and more fancy ones, I think I might have got some from M&Co, who don't do underwear anymore.

If a slip doesn't work under a particular dress, then obviously, you wouldn't wear one. Back in the day, everything would be lined, so there wouldn't be an issue. I don't wear them under every single dress, but my work dresses aren't really short with cut outs, so it's perfectly possible to wear a slip, if I want to.

Oldraver · 14/07/2024 09:29

I have one of the M&S microfibre ones and wear it under a couple of 'best' dresses. I wouldn't wear for everyday. I have a shirt dress and the slip underneath goes quite well as it sorts of looks like a cami underneath

I've also got a couple of tiered cotton ones I wear under flared dresses in the winter. They give a bit of extra warmth to dresses in the cold

GreyDuck · 14/07/2024 09:30

Well this thread has been a revelation! I am mid 40s and have never worn a slip. I'm not aware that anyone I know wears them.
If they are as magical as pp suggest, I'm amazed they are not discussed more often on TV shows etc. I don't remember Gok Wan or Tinny and Susannah ever putting anyone in a slip, but there was plenty of discussion of torture control underwear.

Even having read the full thread, I am not convinced. I understand about the movement thing, I have lined clothing, and it flows better. I am not sure about the polyester next to the bodyvthough.
Are the posters who wear them also the same people who wear m&s and Uniqlo thermals in winter? I bought these following a similar thread and ended up a bit sweaty and stinky.

Would a cotton slip work as well as the poly ones? It's not as, well, slippy! I can't afford silk.

GoldFrame · 14/07/2024 09:31

I don’t wear thermals 🙈
