Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

I kind of feel like I am sure some kind of damehood or OBE for my philanthropic work in drawing attention to under-skirt issues. Will definitely be hitting up Mark's and Spencers for a slip to go under whatever dress I inevitably wear to the ceremony.

They'll be giving them to you for free as a brand ambassador 😁

I found a nightie that looks like a slip for hospital from British Boxers. Fingers crossed it fits now. All inspired by your thread.

Gok wan might be on the phone next!

Ooh and I was scrolling reels and the blonde geordie woman from dragons den was on one of them trying on dresses and appeared to be wearing smoothing undergarments and I thought of you 😊

I've been wanging on about slips under unlined dresses for years. It's one of the best ways to make cheap things look expensive. And replacing shit buttons for shell ones.

Replacing cheap buttons for shell ones? What do you mean?

@Darkdiamond or should I say Dame Darkdiamond, I do agree an OBE is a most fitting (see the pun?) acknowledgement of your sterling, educative and self-sacrificing work here.

I had a failed trip to buy a bra today but I did notice a whole rail of slips and thought of this thread!

Benvolio · 15/07/2024 20:14

So, occasionally , if I can be arsed, for something I'll wear forever, I replace buttons that look mass-produced (I do not have stringent standards) with ones that look more 'natural' ie expensive.
Shell buttons are available cheaply in loads of colours and sizes on Amazon etc.

Replacing plastic buttons with mother of pearl buttons

Mother of pearl

You could also use corozo nut or wood buttons

Ah thanks both, I only wear a fitted vest and pants/shorts in bed and can't have my shoulders covered as I get too hot
I had a look at the whole nightdress section on marks website and none of them were what I was thinking of. Thank you though.

Might take a look elsewhere. Other retailers are available I suppose 😁

I noticed the other day that Marks have a few chemise style nightdresses at the moment.

I seeeeee!😍

I'm totally subscribed to this new idea and confidently went through my cake tin of buttons, but I have maybe two (maybe they are probably nicer plastic tbh) I am wondering why and how I have collected no mother of pearl ones in all this time of building a button stash. I mean literally buying vintage buttons from markets and cutting them off old clothes for years. Nope, pure plastic and fabric covered ones.
I'm rubbish.

Why thank you!!! Absolute privilege!!
I wonder if there has been an uptick in sales of M&S slips since this thread started. Out of interest, had anyone bought one?

I was looking for one of my slips today and found a negligee style nightie that I got from Primark years ago and I popped it on. Bob's yer uncle!

Me! There are loads of M&S seconds on eBay so I have ordered two full slips and a half slip.
I won't need to report back, as I expect you will hear the thunderous sound of jaws hitting the ground all around as my dress-wearing is elevated beyond all recognition.

rainydogday · 17/07/2024 22:41

I got a skin coloured one to wear under one dress as was a bit sheer. Now I wear it with others as it's comfy! Also a bit warmer sometimes. I also wear those nude cycle short things so I don't get cold in dresses in the autumn. It's a life changer! I am mid 40's and my kids call them my grannie bloomers!

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 18/07/2024 09:20

Well, I've been influenced! I've ordered some cheapies from Amazon just to test the water. Culottes, because my thighs don't play nicely together. Not exactly a sexy look but oh well.

WorriedRelative · 20/07/2024 10:47

I have several, two different lengths of half slip and two different lengths of full slip plus a couple of different colours.

I don't wear them with everything but they are incredibly useful and improve the look of your clothes plus stopping inadvertently exposing yourself and adding warmth in winter.

I think more people should try them.

Just spotted these on the Agnès b website:

Probably not twice as good as the apparently identical John Lewis one for 18 quid, but does look super cute in its little bag.

Not quite the same as a pair of M&S culottes is it?

Well no, but I wouldn’t call those slips .

WhereAreWeNow · 17/08/2024 22:30

I got a new slip to add to my collection from Lindex. First time I've shopped there and I'm pleased with it. Nice deep V neck so it doesn't show under low cut dresses.

With you on the buttons. I need some replacing on an otherwise perfect coat.

But it's a no to slips! I don't have any dresses which require one

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 18/08/2024 07:51

I'm a great fan of Agnès b's quality so their clothes look good - the stitching is even for example, the clothes fit on my funny shoulder, and they last and last, so I think it will be better than the JL one to be honest.

But if you don't wear it everyday the JL one will be fine.

Unless all your dresses are lined every unlined dress hangs better with a slip.

CalicoPusscat · 18/08/2024 08:25

They're lined :)

Curious about where you shop - it's hard to find lined dresses these days?

Here is someone in dire need of a slip.
