Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

WHERE ARE YOU FINDING THEM?!?

I've got maybe 4 dresses that I wear and immediately regret due to them riding up my bum crack and have only found M&S which are a bit above my budget. Any other ideas?

There are plenty on Amazon cheaper than M&S and very similar to the ones they sell. I have one I wear with bias cut dresses, much more flattering as the dress skims over it rather than clinging to bumpy bits

WhataPithy · 14/07/2024 17:18

Slips are definitely making a comeback. I recently bought a bias cut skirt from Uniqlo and it came with a separate slip! Amazing value.

TootsyPants · 14/07/2024 18:33

I regularly wear a full slip of the dress is not lined.

That skirt is fab. I'm going to buy the black one.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 14/07/2024 20:54

EBearhug, I love ALL of those.

I've always been put off the satin/silk ones because of the straps. If I wear them to bed then I've somehow managed to snap one or both. I must toss and turn like anything.

Stretch satin though, they should be safe...

Or, I could just not wear them in bed!

I'm finding this an oddly compelling thread and keep coming back to the updates!

Just wondering if I could wear those marks and Spencer ones as a nightie? I have surgery next month and it occurred to me that I might need a nightie in case I have a catheter.

Would they be decent?

Blimey you're lucky. The last time I purchased a skirt with a separate detachable slip was nearly 20 years ago! Haven't met another since. I've never shopped in Uniqlo before, perhaps I ought to correct that.

Rainyblue · 14/07/2024 22:20

Does anyone have any suggestions where to get cotton slips?

WhereAreWeNow · 14/07/2024 22:21

I'm now thinking of buying the Uniqlo skirt just for the slip 😂
It is nice but I'm not sure about any of the colours.

A choice of silk ones here (though might depend on your budget.)

I've fallen hard for the Leonora and Isabella 😍😍

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 15/07/2024 08:23

I've never shopped here but kept the link for when it might be useful. Which seems to be now:

Your link just came up with the main M&S page, Drooly, if it's the cool comfort, I wear those to bed and they're lovely but they are thin and slinky. Would I wear one in hospital? I might, they're not see-through but I'd take a long cardi or dressing gown.

I don't know if that helps gauge what you have in mind?

I wouldn't wear them in hospital. They're really close fitting, that's the point, and would be uncomfortably revealing in a public space without a bra.
I'd go for something like this, opaque, not close fitting, not too short.

Droolylabradors · 15/07/2024 09:47

Ah thanks both, I only wear a fitted vest and pants/shorts in bed and can't have my shoulders covered as I get too hot
I had a look at the whole nightdress section on marks website and none of them were what I was thinking of. Thank you though.

Might take a look elsewhere. Other retailers are available I suppose 😁

Droolylabradors · 15/07/2024 09:47

Am hoping to avoid the 'hotter than hell' hospital peri meno sweats.

I got the navy one. The fabric has a nice weight to it.

DysonSphere · 15/07/2024 11:59

Can someone provide a link to the uniqlo skirt or did I miss it?

Uniqlo is very utilitarian in it’s offerings but they have some great stables.

I’ve had their microfibre camis as an under garment for years. And this year they also have halterneck dresses with built in bra. Really well designed, I’m an E cup and felt very secure.

shatteredmum1 · 15/07/2024 12:12

I always wear a slip. Dresses hang much better with them. Fabric doesn't cling.
Marks and Spencer!!

Darkdiamond · 15/07/2024 13:22

I kind of feel like I am sure some kind of damehood or OBE for my philanthropic work in drawing attention to under-skirt issues. Will definitely be hitting up Mark's and Spencers for a slip to go under whatever dress I inevitably wear to the ceremony.

The idea of slips reminds me so much of my Nan who never ever in her life wore a pair of trousers and always had a slip under her dress or skirt 💗 my sister and I were also put in them as children but it's never occurred to me as an adult to wear one... now I'm genuinely thinking how much better some of my summer dresses could look with a smoothing slip underneath!

Darkdiamond · 15/07/2024 14:36

I am quite slim but have a c section apron. I'm on holidays so couldn't find my slip in a pile of clothes shoved back I to a suitcase and threw a dress on without one, but feel so concious of feeling my overhang in a way that I've ever noticed before. Am dying to find my slip to make this horrible feeling go away!
