Does nobody wear slip any more?

I have 3 slips, a mini skirt style one, a midi dress style and a long maxi one. I would never ever wear a dress or skirt without a slip underneath, unless it's really well lined. It smoothes out lumps and bumps, makes the dress less see through if light in colour, and stops it from getting stuck up my bottom if I stand up. I see so many dresses from behind that would look so much better with a slip underneath. Have slips been confided to history? Is it like wearing a corset, codpiece or hoop under my dress?

My slips are by Kayser (TBH an old name in lingerie) and have deep lace at the top. They’re cut to skim the body so have a good shape of their own (which is why “slip dresses” became a thing). I got them from the local independent underwear shop, they were no more expensive than those from M&S. As well as being practical, they’re a bit of everyday glam.
Of course I don’t wear them under all dresses as not all dresses need one, but pp is right - if you can’t fit a slip underneath, your dress is too tight.

Kayser Bondor used to manufacture for M and S. My great aunt used to run one of their factory outlets. Great bargains!

@GreyDuck I wear my cotton ones with very flared dresses (Lady V, Lyra's) which I think are polyester, so there's no clinging. Mine give a bit of extra swirlyness and volume without having to resort to those net ones

rubytubeytubes · 14/07/2024 09:46

Matalan have good ones too

Well this thread has been a revelation! I am mid 40s and have never worn a slip. I'm not aware that anyone I know wears them.
If they are as magical as pp suggest, I'm amazed they are not discussed more often on TV shows etc. I don't remember Gok Wan or Tinny and Susannah ever putting anyone in a slip, but there was plenty of discussion of torture control underwear.

Even having read the full thread, I am not convinced. I understand about the movement thing, I have lined clothing, and it flows better. I am not sure about the polyester next to the bodyvthough.
Are the posters who wear them also the same people who wear m&s and Uniqlo thermals in winter? I bought these following a similar thread and ended up a bit sweaty and stinky.

Would a cotton slip work as well as the poly ones? It's not as, well, slippy! I can't afford silk.

Yes I am a slip person and a Uniqlo thermals person!
I don't find either to be sweaty or smelly. They're very breathable. But I'm generally freezing cold and not very sweaty.

Same here - Uniqlo and M&S slip wearer - don't find either sweaty or smelly but like you, I'm not a particularly sweaty person 🤷🏼‍♂️

There are loads of very pretty/detailed slip/chemise available but I prefer the plain M&S slip as, personally, I hate fussy lumpy bumpy lingerie under clothes where you see the outline of them. It's why Gossard Glossies are my preferred bra - my clothes hang, move and look better.

elQuintoConyo · 11/07/2024 18:18

I made some as I couldn't find any in the shops! Dresses and skirts are so bloody see-through in the sun! So I got my sewing machine out <shows age>

M&S have plenty. And John Lewis

Rainydayinlondon · 14/07/2024 10:46

If you wear a knitted dress with tights, the dress clings unless you wear a slip?
Sadly M&S don’t make nice attractive slips anymore.

BobbyBiscuits · 14/07/2024 11:01

I have one of my mum's old slips from the 70s that I used to wear as a dress, with grungy bovver boots. I didn't realise exactly how see through it was!?

Cantonet · 14/07/2024 11:04

I only wear cotton slips. I really dislike the feel of synthetic slips. I bought up several of the cotton M&S waist slips in the sale several years ago when they were discontinuing them. Now my preferred ones are the Hanro ultralight cotton full length slips. So light they're suitable for tropical weather conditions.

I hate the feeling of the Uniqlo thermals & just can't wear them.

No I don’t wear thermals, unless in sub zero conditions. I tend to run hot.

The M&S “cool comfort” ones I find are much comfier than a traditional polyester lining. But unlike some other posters I would not wear them on a really hot sticky day. I haven’t got any cotton ones at the moment but have been planning on buying one as I have some thin cotton dresses that I love but are far too thin to be worn alone.

The Gok Wan etc point is very good. I think they became unfashionable and replaced by Spanx. They’ve never been away but recently making something of a come back!

HoppityBun · 14/07/2024 11:22

It depends what they’re made of. I loathe nylon slips but a silk skirt slip under a dress or skirt helps them hang better and stops them being see-through. It also stops the dress from clinging to tights. But many dresses and skirts are lined for that reason

BigAnne · 14/07/2024 11:41

@greengreyblue people used to say "it's raining in Paris" if your waist slip was showing 😂

BigAnne · 14/07/2024 11:57

@BatshitCrazyWoman I bought this from BHS easily 30 years ago

BlackSwan · 14/07/2024 12:00

I do. Trying to emulate Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on A Hot Tin Roof. Sadly, not the same figure.

So basically, you've never worn one but your superior knowledge means everyone who does is wrong.

Very few skirts and even fewer dresses are lined these days, and that's at any price point.

GoldFrame · 14/07/2024 13:07

What I also do sometimes if a dress is pretty but comes with a horrible nylony inner slip is to cut that out and use a nice cool one instead

Oh dear, I didn't intend my post to be insulting to people who wear slips. Perhaps I should have clarified that I'm not convinced that they'd work for me.
That was why I raised the question of the thermals. I presume the people who wear them happily don't smell bad, but I can't wear them. I wondered if the same might be true of the slips.
I do wear a lot of dresses so am curious about options that would make them look better.

sugarbyebye · 14/07/2024 16:00

well I was going to try my new slips out yesterday as I was going to a village fete and it seemed fitting, but it was too fucking cold and drizzly so I was in jeans and a hoody. Wish this weather would piss off.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 14/07/2024 16:32

Wantitalltogoaway · 14/07/2024 07:36

These are a lot nicer than the plain M and S ones!
The ones on all these links look very shapeless. I wonder where you can get lacy ones like this?

They also look a lot lower so more practical, although they still wouldn’t work with a lot of my dresses.

Every time I've seen a narky or dismissive post on this really quite nice thread... it's from you. Nobody, but nobody is making you look at them, or buy one or wear one.

As for shapeless well, I suppose you have to have some shape yourself. The slips follow your form, they certainly do mine so, if you're lacking a figure then no, you're quite right, they will be shapeless. They are foundation clothes, not miracle workers.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 14/07/2024 16:41

You've been very bitchy to someone who made a perfectly pleasant and neutral post @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe .

Nothing 'really quite nice' about this thread thanks to you and other ridiculously defensive posters.

(Edited with my apologies for confusing you with one of the other posters ripping people's heads off for no reason. )

To answer your questions I don't think a cotton slip wouldn't work under a cotton or silk dress. Cotton sticks to cotton and silk. A cotton slip would work under a polyester or similar material which is itself slinky.

Markies thermals are brilliant.

EBearhug · 14/07/2024 16:58

I'd be prepared to try fine lawn cotton anyway.

Cantonet · 14/07/2024 17:00

I wear my cotton slips under everything. I wear predominantly natural fabrics & they work under all my summer dresses.
I've just been investigating silk slips but Hanro only sell satin ones. They're made from Viscose though & not polyester & therefore should be more breathable. I should imagine Bamboo ones made by Boody will be the same.

BashfulClam · 14/07/2024 17:08

My gran could always tell if you weren’t wearing one just by the way your dress/skirt hung. They definitely make a difference and I need to get some.
