What shoes do you wear if you can’t walk in heels?

I’m really, really bad in heels. Broke my ankle a few years ago and I’m like Bambi if I try anything over two inches. Anything strappy presents an even worse issue.

I’m also very tall and don’t like towering over people constantly.

I’d like to buy this dress for an event but I don’t know what to do shoe-wise.

Any ideas, and ideally, links please oh wise ones?

I wear trainers.
Haven't worn heels for years. I think heels are outdated now.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 11/07/2024 09:59

Brogues would look absolutely ridiculous with that dress.

I can walk in heels but I don't. To go with that particular dress I'd probably get a flat pair of sandals with gold straps, or if in winter time, a close toed flat option.

I live in trainers and Birkies like someone else mentioned upthread, or boots in winter. But I do like the idea of one versatile pair of flat shoes that are maybe more expensive than cheap n nasty ballet flats!

I have a pair of Vivaias that are sooo comfortable, look good and are the only slip on shoes I've ever had that don't slip off when I walk

I have these, they’re really comfortable and look good

@DonnaChang What's the event? Love the Donna Chang episode!

Classic episode!

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Will click through them today.

For those asking, the dress is called Kinley and it’s from Jolie Moi. I bought from a local boutique but I think Next carey Jolie Moi ranges. I got it on sale so I’m guessing it’s not current or recent line.

Event is a corporate awards event in September. Starts late afternoon and goes into evening.

I have these shoes that I bought from ASOS but never wore. Think they’re still at the back of the wardrobe so might see how they look. They’re completely flat though- as much as I hate heels, do they give a better leg shape.

Leg shape is hardly seen in a long dress though! I like those blue shoes.

No one really wears traditional "heels" so flats / wedges / block heel / platform/ flatform / smart trainers / kitten heels and of course you have some flats.

DoYouSmokePaul · 11/07/2024 12:14

I can’t stand heels and had a couple of evening gown type events recently. I wore these Dune sandals which were perfect.

These are great.

Sparkly flat sandals.
Next do nice ones. Moda In Pelle too.

rainbow126 · 11/07/2024 15:06

Block heel sandals. New look do great ones with a two inch heel.

Topoftheflops · 11/07/2024 15:23

I won't wear heels. I live in my sexy Nike running shoes. Sometimes with dresses, shorts it's Doc Martens. Pointed ballet flats if I fancy a change - I prefer the look of them to rounded toe. For work I wear patent black lace up brogues. Kitten heel sling backs begrudgingly, if I really HAVE to look formal and dressy. I'd rather die than wear high heels.

MadameMassiveSalad · 11/07/2024 17:31

Gold birkis

Freesiabritney · 11/07/2024 17:32

I have these in every colour. I used to be a prolific heels wearer but a foot injury means I struggle now. These are not very high and they are EXTREMELY comfortable. I could walk miles in them.

There is no getting away from it a dress loses something without a heel. I am very tall and share your pain, I would go for a pair of kitten heels with a dress. Sorry but I think some of the links you have been sent with regards to ballet pumps, Mary Jane shoes and brogues would not look right and are definitely frumpy but this is just my view.

TWmover · 11/07/2024 18:26

I'm very tall and whilst I can walk fine in heels I can rarely be bothered anymore. I'd choose a low block heel sandal or something flat but go for something a bit unusual or special details. New Look are a good go to for low block heel sandals for this as they are cheap and comfortable for something that I hardly wear and have loads of colours usually. Otherwise Kurt Geiger usually have some interesting unusual flats...e.g.https://www.kurtgeiger.com/women/shoes/flats/pierra-mj-flat-open-back-multiother-leather-kurt-geiger-london-2123069109
