Beauty advent calendars 2024

Yes I know, I'm stupidly early, but I love a beauty advent calendar and I've just seen Liberty has stopped a sneak peek at their offering this year...

I think there are probably at least 200 people in the queue with a stream joining constantly.

Well I've never seen anything like this. I came to Harrods this morning. I thought the queues of people outside were huge when I was waiting. When I found the advent calendars, they were in a separate little room and I could hardly get in because of the number of people. People are fighting over the calendars! I saw the security guards break up two fights, with drawers from the main calendar flying everywhere! There was no stock left on display within three minutes. They have now sent people outside to a new queue and claim there is more stock 😆😆😆. I wouldn't have come if I had expected it to be like this!

That's crazy! Was that for the fragrance calendar or the main beauty one?

I think it was the fragrance calendar but people were grabbing both. The fight next to me was for a fragrance calendar and I think that's what people in the queue are waiting for.

Growlybear83 · 01/09/2024 11:54

A manager has just been out to say that they will be giving out tickets at midday. Apparently the staff are very traumatised, and I'm not surprised. I've been I queues for the first day of the sales in the past and I've never experienced anything quite like this.

AprilLady · 01/09/2024 11:55

@Growlybear83 !!!! Was thinking of going much later today - sounds like it won’t be worth it as they will all be sold out by then!

Bimblesalong · 01/09/2024 11:56

Good gracious! I wonder how many were truly buying for themselves and how many to sell on.

Cyclingmummy1 · 01/09/2024 11:58

Holland and Barrett looks great for the money. But I still want to see the Bamford one. And if J L is good, I've got vouchers.

I'm loving the idea of fisticuffs in Harrods 😆

Growlybear83 · 01/09/2024 12:00

They are working down the queue handing out tickets, but strictly one calendar only and it doesn't look as though people can buy both. The manager said they may have enough for the queue but she's not sure, so I don't think it's worth coming later, unless they have got more stock that they're not putting out for now.

It was proper fisticuffs as well, two women were rolling around of the floor, drawers flying everywhere, and one of them was bleeding. They were very angry - it took two quite burly security guards to separate them 😆😆😆

pinkchampagne1 · 01/09/2024 12:06

Oh my goodness, I can’t get over people fighting like that over an advent calendar! 😮

I’m now imagining an Alexis vs Krystal Carrington fight, designer dresses with sharp shoulder pads and gorgeous jewellery.

JudgeBurrito · 01/09/2024 12:11

That's crazy @Growlybear83 ! Most of us on the thread have agreed Harrods calendars are good this year, but surely not that good a deal?? The past few years shops have struggled to shift stock so I wonder if we're going to see things selling out quicker this year.

Therightcoffee · 01/09/2024 12:13

@Growlybear83 so hilarious! What on Earth would make someone act like that over a calendar?

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 01/09/2024 12:28

Fighting and bleeding over an advent calendar? That's just awful. Poor staff, no wonder they're upset!

IlovePond · 01/09/2024 12:40

Good grief @Growlybear83 ! Thanks for the update. I had been thinking about going to the store this morning for the main Harrods calendar as I have developed FOMO, (despite having never previously considered spending £250 on just ONE calendar🤣) I am very glad I went swimming instead!

Despite the multiple DOD in the LF calendar, I was leaning towards it, but then watched cosmetopoeia and it did put me off. Unless I got a discount, I think it’s a no from me. (I almost rejoined the LF beauty box to get the £12 discount, but I really disliked the August box, so thought it was a waste of my money!)

Peridot1 · 01/09/2024 12:44

Wow @Growlybear83 that is disgusting. The poor staff.

Growlybear83 · 01/09/2024 12:46

@AprilLady I just asked about the stock levels and was told that they don't have much and it's unlikely that there will be any available by later this afternoon .

I've just left, and the queue outside goes right round the corner - there must still be over 200 people waiting. Never again!

BakeOffRewatch · 01/09/2024 13:07

Thanks for the play by play @Growlybear83 . Not exactly a luxury experience is it? I hear that about lots of things, apparently the Vampire Wife’s closing down sale was a bit of a fight too! I’m going to go on instagram now and see if anyone shared a story of the fight.

Next time someone pops up to put us down about our profligate ardour for beauty advent calendars we can say well it’s not like we’re brawling inside Harrods.

Growlybear83 · 01/09/2024 13:15

I saw a couple of people recording the fight near me. 😆😆

SoloCat · 01/09/2024 13:21

Blimey @Growlybear83 that sounds like hell! Glad I stayed away, although did contemplate for a tiny second. Although, I think Harrods may have inadvertently made it worse with all of the cancellations! I’m sure it’s not the image Harrods were going for 😂

Therightcoffee · 01/09/2024 13:27

No quite, not exactly high class!

Bimblesalong · 01/09/2024 14:00

Crikey! People really need to take a hard look at themselves.

Mind you, a few years ago I was in mns food hall on Christmas Eve picking up my food order. The security guard told me that he had just had to break up a fight between two shoppers over the last shop floor frozen turkey - the item was confiscated by the store and the police were called!

Addictedtobeauty · 01/09/2024 14:04

I went to an H store and it was much more dignified! There was a queue outside with cordons in place before opening. This was moved inside at opening and led into a small room with a pay desk. Calendars were bagged up ready with small extras for reward customers (a Sol de Janeiro 25ml Beija Flor elasti-cream sample and, a bit random, some sweat bands). They also gave a scratch card to win reward point's between £5 and I think £100 she said) - I got £20 of points which were added at the till. There was about 100 or so people in front of me and the same behind me when I left. In and out in about 20 mins, brilliantly organised and the extras were a nice touch. For the points alone it was worth going- I wonder if they’ll send the scratch cards with online orders?

Doubleraspberry · 01/09/2024 14:12

Blimey! What a picture you’ve painted there!

Finally caught up with you all. Nothing this year so far grabs me although I’m about to sneak to our outlet place to look for Penhaligons. From memory their calendar is usually one of the few that doesn’t actually offer any saving if you pay full price, so it would be a great chance to bag a rare discount! I’m also tempted by Elemis.

I’m looking for something for my teen DD too. I have hopes for Boots. Q question - is anyone aware of any monthly boxes that are more teen orientated? I’ve had Look Fantastic and Birchbox in the past but they both had quite a bit of skincare for older people.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 01/09/2024 14:18

@Doubleraspberry How old is your teen? The beauty bay AC might be suitable. Or the H&B one. I got that a couple of times for dd before they stopped doing it in Ireland. She loved it. I think she was 17/18/19 when she had it.
