lovely dress
but how fat we talking?

Oblomov24 · 09/06/2024 10:16

I liked it, Shame it's sold out, the Boden green top similar has also sold out, irritatingly.

TheFairyCaravan · 09/06/2024 10:19

They’ve got it in M&S @CurlewKate

HoneyButterPopcorn · 09/06/2024 10:21

Oh I think it’s lovely! I’d definitely get it (in a colour I could wear again and again).

BCBird · 09/06/2024 10:27

I agree it a nice dress. Re the older couple who got married she said on radio u still get flutters and still get some action🤣

WhoUsesTypeWritersNEway · 09/06/2024 10:27

Lovely dress! I tried one in this style and the bust area was all wrong for me- I tried an 8 and I’m a 30HH, so if you have a large chest you might want to go up a size or just be aware the bust area isn’t very forgiving!

henlake7 · 09/06/2024 10:33

That is such a gorgeous dress (and so many patterns, suitable for all kinds of wear).
I could see anybody from a teen to a 90 yr old rocking it.
Makes me wish I had some spare cash!!LOL😄

Well you can be too fat, as the dress only ever went up to a size 18.
I do think it is pertinent to consider our age and size when buying clothing (I am a size 20) and it is worth considering that just because they make it in your size doesn't mean something will be 'flattering' to wear.
If you genuinely have no fucks to give about what people think about your clothing choices then obviously go for it and wear what you like, I think most people want to wear something that brings out their best features so taking age and size into account is perfectly normal.
That said, I do think that style of dress would be suitable for most ages/sizes.

I'm 65, 14 on a good day , 16 on a bad. I have no idea what my "best features" are. (Not dead?)

I buy clothes entirely on the principle of "wow, that is an amazing dress/ jacket/ coat - does it come in my size" Does it "flatter me" or bring out my "best features" never enters my head. There isn't a week goes by without at least one person telling me what a fabulous dress etc I'm wearing. I guess my "best feature" is a good eye for clothes.

I hope the OP finds this thread useful. It's a wearable, pretty dress.

  1. I genuinely give no fucks-but I want to look nice. And not stand out at this particular wedding which will have many very traditional people at it. I don't want people to be looking at the pictures, and saying "Bloody hell, what was great aunt Curlew thinking??" Which is why I was canvassing opinions. As I say to my children "context is all"

  2. For information, in case anyone else is interested, these dresses do come in bigger than an 18. Just not this colour now!

YorkNew · 09/06/2024 10:55

It doesn’t look like a thin you young dress.

SiobhanSharpe · 09/06/2024 11:25

It's a lovely dress, great for a summer wedding and would suit almost any age or size but as a 38DD I think I'd be falling out of the top!
i don't tend to go for styles that emphasise the bust for the same reason. Just me though.

stayathomer · 09/06/2024 11:40

I think it’s gorgeous and will suit all ages and sizes and is fab!!!

CurlewKate · 09/06/2024 11:46

@beetr00 Thank you! I've bought it! Fingers crossed......

I love that story about the 96 year old bride. I don't know what work she's had done, but she looks fabulous!

The dress is a good all purpose fits pretty much anyone style I would say- definitely can size up to any size, I think the bust is flattering for the bigger chested people, although I see what you are saying about wearing a cami. I much prefer the v or cross-over though to the high necked/crew neck dresses, I think they rarely flatter the bigger person, only the very thin models, and then their arms and legs stick out amid the billowing layers!

WayOutOfLine · 09/06/2024 11:48

Fab, OP, I think it'll look great!

Sedgwick · 09/06/2024 11:49

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle “best feature - not dead” 😂.

@CurlewKate oh good, I love threads like this.

FionaP1959 · 09/06/2024 11:51

Looks a lovely dress and perfect for such an occasion. If it suits you go for it.

bookish83 · 09/06/2024 11:52

Its a lovely dress, ive tried it on as a 16.
Their puff sleeves can sometimes be a lot on a very short frame thats all but the petite range works well

Sainsbury's TU also have a dupe style in green check and rust btw x

RosesAndHellebores · 09/06/2024 11:59

I have it. I am an M&S 14 and needed a 16 in this. I'm almost 64.. 36DD. It's a lovely versatile dress.

Inspireme2 · 09/06/2024 12:07

Love it!
As long as it fits you right then buy it.
Love the green best

CurlewKate · 09/06/2024 12:24

I think it will be too long-but I have time to have it taken up professionally.

LuluBlakey1 · 09/06/2024 12:29

No idea what is too old but a size 20 is too fat as it only goes up to an 18 and some colours only have smaller sizes left.

Height probably significant too looking at the skirt and the style.

WayOutOfLine · 09/06/2024 12:32

It's up to you, but I'm off midi length for most things, if it has a long length and you aren't tripping over, it might be great. I prefer maxi or short, more dramatic. Midi is just 'mid' as my children would say (although I do have a few left over midi dresses I still wear).

Commonsense22 · 09/06/2024 12:32

That was a gorgeous dress! Hope you find something else you like.
