@MrsLeonFarrell that's interesting as I didn't watch live so didn't see Charles' smiles and the press I've seen hasn't mentioned protestors.

There was a small but vocal group. You could hear them very faintly occasionally on the coverage but everytime they shouted the crowd responded with cheers or the anthem. I'm not really sure what they were trying to achieve. I do think though it must have been a bit off putting from the balcony.

Eaumyword · 16/06/2024 09:12

I thought at one point Charles was possibly holding back tears on the balcony as the national anthem played for him. He looked emotional to me.
I thought Camilla gave a tentative wave as if she's never sure of the reception she might get.
Kate's smile is always beautiful - a consummate professional.
I do enjoy watching the royal ceremonies.
Btw - Cam's outfit looked pale green on our tv but is reported as being cream - did anyone else get that?

themessygarden · 16/06/2024 09:27

I didn't manage to watch it all live, but it is always a wonderful event.

I thought Charles didn't look great, although it could be due to being cold and he did stand in the rain for a while, so he may have been feeling the cold even more. I think Sophie has really come into her own in the style stakes, the dress was gorgeous as was the one worn by Lady Louise. Catherine just looked stunning as usual, and the kids are gorgeous, they all have amazing hair. I did think William looked uneasy, he must bee so worried for Catherine and Charles.

Yes, I did notice the reassuring hand by Sophie on Williams back.

deeahgwitch · 16/06/2024 09:41

As @Choux writes ".....most of us who are dealing with a sick parent don't have to help do the parent's high profile job as well as worry about them. And that's before you add i his wife's cancer treatment and how that impacts his children. He is going through it."

William certainly is and he doesn't have his other parent or a sibling to support him. 🥲

smilesy · 16/06/2024 09:45

I agree that Charles seemed quite emotional. I’m pretty sure he was close to tears when the National Anthem played just before they left the balcony. I think he also seemed to smile a lot too though. The weather didn’t help and there are times when he had to look fairly solemn when he was taking the salute etc. It must have been a tiring day for him as he was on his feet a lot. So not surprising he looked a bit less than his best

NottsNora · 16/06/2024 10:01

I watched it live and I did wonder if Charles was thinking this might be his last Trooping the Colour. I watched Camilla at the end and it looked like she said words to the effect of “Well done, come inside” - I am no lip reader, I hasten to add, but that was the body language. Sorry to be morbid. If you don’t think this post is appropriate then please report it and get it deleted.

NottsNora · 16/06/2024 10:02

Back to style: Sophie’s balloon sleeves are on trend. I’ve been looking for a new dress and these are everywhere.

Everyone looked gorgeous.

Maireas · 16/06/2024 10:04

I don't think it's morbid, @NottsNora . When you face serious illness it does make you reflect, never mind when you're a bit older. Plus there are a lot of things to consider and he could be loathe to put any more pressure on William.
Here's hoping things get better all round.

Absolutely. I like Charles. May he live long as King and is given more time.

I agree. I know that he has plans for the monarchy, for the properties and the charitable organisations, so it would be nice if he could see those to fruition.

I was thinking that the Duke of Edinburgh award and The Prince’s Trust are both initiatives that directly benefit young people in a positive way. I’ve seen so many young people with backpacks this weekend doing their Bronze walk and my DS is off next weekend for his Gold.

Anyway, Louis was hilarious yesterday but can someone explain the Navy sartorial theme? Was this to include the Navy in a pageant that features the RAF and the Army?

DuchessOfPort · 16/06/2024 10:25

I only saw some snippets but I wondered if he were thinking about the late Queen and Prince Philip. It must be so odd to spend 70 years on the balcony as a supporting act then have the bereavement as your promotion.

Combined with treatment for cancer, it would be pretty hard work. I don’t think KC minds Not My King people - they’re entitled to their view and the friends I have IRL who would support a republic over a monarchy don’t mind the individuals personally, they just want a change to the way things are run so it’s all on merit. Which is a perfectly sensible view if you feel that way!

KillingMeDeftIy · 16/06/2024 10:54

I do think the Dutch and now Danish (and Spanish, though that had its roots in scandal) makes sense. Queens Beatrix and Margrethe abdicated at a time when they are well enough to carry out some duties but don’t necessarily want all the responsibilities of being the monarch and can enjoy a bit of a retirement. Plus the transition to the new monarch is less traumatic as they aren’t dealing with a bereavement at the same time.

I know the late QEII held great store in her duty but looking back, I wonder if it would’ve been better for her to abdicate after her diamond Jubilee and enjoy her last years with Phillip and her horses? God knows she’d earned it! I guess “abdication” is a dirty word with the Windsors but there’s a difference between abdicating to get married and abdicating after 60 years of being the monarch.

Maireas · 16/06/2024 10:58

I think it was different for the late Queen for two reasons. Firstly, her formative years were scarred by the abdication of her uncle and her father's accession just before WW2.
Secondly, she believed that her Coronation oath meant that it was her commitment for her lifetime.
Perhaps in the future things will change.

Kate looked amazing !
Her outfit, hat, make up and hair, all fantastic.
Apart from the ghastly white stilettos. I'm no stylist but wouldn't navy stilettos look nicer ?
Sophie looked great.
I wasn't keen on George's double breasted jacket suit style - is he getting style tips from Great Uncle Edward Shock nor did I like Cute Louis's long socks and long shorts combo.

KillingMeDeftIy · 16/06/2024 11:01

Speaking of double-breasted suits, here is a man who has clearly never kicked a ball around in the garden in his life!

gluenotsoup · 16/06/2024 11:01

It was just quite moving to see them all together, as a supportive family tbh, style seemed a bit irrelevant and I’d feel churlish if I was negative at all.
Not there was anything to complain about style wise anyway! Camilla has found a style she looks good in and is sticking to it, Kate looked very elegant, a little wistful, and I like that she showed solidarity with Charlotte in the themes, she seemed to stick by her mum throughout. Sophie looks great, I love the yellow and she’s really got it right there.
I also love the splendour of the uniforms, it’s always a pleasure to watch.

Good points @KillingMeDeftIy. Charles was de facto monarch for a few years while the Queen was declining and perhaps part of his modernisation was a view that he would reign till William's kids were say secondary school age and then pass the reins over while Charles was still around to support him and Kate.

But now ill health might mean Charles is forced to step back / slow down sooner even if he continues being King and William is not currently able to step up with young kids and an ill wife. And even when Kate is recovered the worry of her cancer returning will be ever present. With Andrew, Harry and Meghan off the squad and the Gloucesters / Kents getting ever older it's very apparent there are not many royals able to get out there for the next 15-20 years until the Wales children are ready.

Chewbecca · 16/06/2024 11:47

I loved Louis' sock / short combi!
My DS wore long socks and shorts in infants and I always thought he was extremely cute in them so will probably be forever fond of the look.

KillingMeDeftIy · 16/06/2024 11:53

I grew up in Australia and will forever think of shorts with long socks as standard male schoolteacher wear in the summer!

Yes, it was reported that it was pale green. Anna Valentine, I think.
