Anyone not bother to get nails done for holidays?

Does anyone else not bother with nails etc for their holidays?
It's usually a standard thing but costs are up!

OP posts:
Lavenderandbrown · 12/04/2024 22:29

Nail salons busy near me. I do think a natural nail is having its moment. I do-my own pedicure and I always do it before a holiday. I like a salon manicure and pedicure for the shaping and cuticle care but not varnish. I’m amazed how much nicer my nails look after someone else does my cuticles. I have unvarnished finger nails always due to work but I prefer my toes pink My nails seem to grow better with a bit of varnish.

I was on holiday in March and can honestly say I didn’t see any woman without their nails done.

I don't even notice if women have their nails done or not.

Upinthenightagain · 12/04/2024 22:34

Hark at all these mumsnetters who are so superior and comfortable in their own skin that the very idea of having your nails done and putting fake tan is completely absurd. The rest of us are such desperados 🙄

That's your spin. Has anyone said "it's absurd" ?

The OP asked a question; posters answered it. Many posters simply have no interest in having nails done. It's not something I even notice.

Whatever. I love fake tan and make up just dint like getting my nails done. We don't all have to like the same things you know.

Nobody has said that. That's your own interpretation. I don't think women who do their nails are "desperados". DD does her nails. I am just not interested.

There are a lot of beauty conventions I am not interested in. Doesn't make me worse or better.

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/04/2024 22:50

No, never done it!

OP I’m equally as shocked by the responses. Everyone I know gets theirs “done” for holidays.

Interestingly, I’ve just been thinking today about what to do with my hands (toes will definitely be painted by a professional). I’m leaning towards the more natural look. I always go for a very natural colour anyway and I do like the look of my nails when they’re done but gel always makes them so weak - I’m thinking I might go and get them filed, cuticles trimmed but no colour/gels

See I find the idea of getting your toes painted by a professional even more odd. Regular polish doesn't chip easily on toes, so I don't see what you are gaining by paying £30 (or whatever it costs these days) to get them 'done' by a professional.

What I resent most is the time - faffing about making an appointment, getting to the salon on time, sitting there bored out of your brains for however long it takes - then after a week it starts to grow out and look shit, so you've got all the hassle of trying to get it off. I honestly don't know how anyone can be arsed with this.

DaoineSidhe · 13/04/2024 00:01

I think done nails are awful. I can't bear them, not a phobia but really hate them, the longer the worse they are. I don't mind French manicures on natural length nails. This is maybe because I can't bear anything stuck to or covering my hand nails.

suki1964 · 13/04/2024 00:17

Not especially for holidays because I do keep my nails looking good with gels or press ons

Theres those who like eyelashes and brows done, theres me and my nails

babyhiding · 13/04/2024 00:19

If I'm going somewhere hot I will get my toes done as I have ugly feet but with gel pedicure, my feet look a bit more humane in flip flops and sandals.

This is your insecurity talking. No one has said this.

nothingsforgotten · 13/04/2024 00:57

I've never had my nails done ever.

Doteycat · 13/04/2024 01:29

Painted toes make me want to gag.
And nailvarnish on fingernails is manky stuff.
Horrible stuff.
My hands and feet and nails are v well cared for, i cant stand polish.

I like having gels done but because I do a practical job it's impossible to keep my nails nice....so it's a waste of time and money for me
I also hate anyone touching my feet so wouldn't like a pedicure, but I do normally do my toenails for a holiday.

I know some people who have their nails done every fortnight, some occassionally and some never have them done. I've always assumed it's personal preference rather than feeling superior or desperate...Confused

Guineaguineaguinea · 13/04/2024 06:51

On holiday at the moment. I did my own toes. I do sometimes have gels on my hands before a trip but couldn’t fit it in and don’t mind leaving them bare. On the plane I noticed most women around me had them done, haven’t looked whilst I’ve been out here but I will look around the pool today and report back!

As I get older I get lower maintenance so maybe I just don’t care anymore. I’d rather put the cash towards the trip than my nails nowadays.

See I love the time away from everything/my DC to switch off and relax. I find it much harder to carve out the time to do them when I’m at home. Whereas having them done professionally (whether normal polish or gel), means that I’m out the house for something that is solely for me.

NeedWineNow · 13/04/2024 09:17

I used to but don’t anymore. I do have a pedicure with gel nails though as my toes are pretty grim due to doing ballet and tap and I like to have pretty toes on holiday 😁

Gwenhwyfar · 13/04/2024 09:18

Sunflowersinthehaze · 12/04/2024 17:10

Never had them done at all!

Exactly. I'm interested in how I look, but a coat of nail varnish is enough.

piscofrisco · 13/04/2024 09:58

I get my nails downs every two to three weeks-fingers. Toes I do myself.

anonima · 13/04/2024 10:00

Never had mine done, for a holiday or otherwise 😁. Not something I want to spend my money on at this point.

Exactly this. I don't go for the 'done' thing either, but that isn't to say I don't give a second thought to anything grooming-related. Quite the contrary. I don't 'do' professional manicures because they weaken my nails. I invest in moisturizing oils, handcreams and cuticle softeners and use them daily, and I use a glass nail file. Because they're not dry I don't suffer many breaks, and the glass file prevents peeling.

Yes, fake nails and the gel polish might last. But a couple of weeks into those manicures you can see where a gap has started to appear between the cuticle and the nail base. Plus cuticles have often been left to grow back. My 'personal preference' is that I couldn't tolerate either the look or the feel of that.

I keep them filed to neat, mid-length ovals. Others may dislike an 'undone' look; my own particular hang-up is that I can't bear the sight or feeling of dry, raggy cuticles and hangnails.

To each their own. I personally couldn't care less what other women's nails look like.

DustyMaiden · 13/04/2024 10:54

I do my own, semi cured wraps. Excellent invention . My nails are so brittle, couldn’t stop them breaking.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 13/04/2024 11:00

No, but I never have had them done regularly. I wear them short, neat and unpolished.

I do paint my toenails a warm neutral shade during sandal season.

MidnightMeltdown · 13/04/2024 11:04

I can't say I noticed whether people had their nails done on the last beach holiday I went on (long haul), but the majority of other tourists weren't British, so I don't know whether that makes a difference.

To be brutally honest, very few people looked good (loads of very overweight women wearing bikinis, lots of tattoos on show, people with unnatural skin shades, ranging from lobster red, to leathery Donatella Versace orange-brown etc).

Perhaps I'm holidaying in the wrong place but virtually nobody looked in the slightest bit glamorous. I wouldn't have noticed if they'd had their nails done.
