Anyone not bother to get nails done for holidays?

Does anyone else not bother with nails etc for their holidays?
It's usually a standard thing but costs are up!

Always get gel toes for my holiday. I get them done year round tbh.

Only like clear polish on my finger nails and I do that myself.

ontheflighttosingapore · 12/04/2024 19:18

I always get mine done for holiday but no other time. Gel on hands and feet cost me 47 last time but makes me feel good

I don't. I feel gel nails are a bit tacky now but maybe that's just me. I got them done a few years ago before I went on holiday and one of the nails popped off when I was in the pool on the second day. Was really annoying! Now I just do my own nails and take the bottle of varnish with me for any top ups.

I've never heard of gel nails popping off. Are you sure they weren't acrylics?

pharmachameleon · 12/04/2024 19:35

@ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey no I've never had acrylics. Maybe it was because I'd spent so long in the pool? The whole nail colour thing fell off. Looked awful!

AtrociousCircumstance · 12/04/2024 19:45

It’s not negativity @NotmySundaybest - it’s people having a variety of different norms! I think everyone’s been light hearted apart from you, with that last comment!

effoffwind · 12/04/2024 19:51

I used to have gel but stopped once I realised how damaging the so called " not damaging to natural nail " stuff is
Now I just do polish at home before a holiday and take it back off for work in return

Sunnnybunny72 · 12/04/2024 19:58

Only had my nails done once for my wedding day. Then sat on honeymoon the following week and picked them all off.

Dargawn · 12/04/2024 20:06

I don’t like the nails done look. I think it can look a bit tacky. It’s only in the last ten or so years this was a thing and when I was in my 20s no one had polished nails that I mixed with.

what I am thinking though is a manicure which is an underrated thing to . It makes such a difference. Then just put some clear on. I like the gel of the colour is right but agree after two weeks or so I wish I had not bothered!

Beginningless · 12/04/2024 20:07

Another here that’s only ever had nails done once, to be a bridesmaid. I love how MN opens your eyes to wee things like this - there is no ‘done thing’ really, OP, and you can do whatever you like (within reason lol)

RaraRachael · 12/04/2024 20:08

My hairdresser rents a chair in a beauty salon and it doesn't matter what time I'm in there, the 4 nail girls are busy. People seem to get their nails done just for everyday use, not just special occasions. I'd never dream of doing that.

I used to get mine done for holidays but last time, one came off 2 days in to the holiday and when I got home it took me ages to get it off my toenails so this time I'm just going to do my own.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 12/04/2024 20:09

I do get my nails done for holidays as it's a special treat - I keep my nails short and no varnish for my work, so a holiday is when I can get vibrant colours and fun designs! I get fingers and toes in gel and they last well, even with lots of swimming and sun cream. I've never had them chip until around 3 weeks and I'm home by then and it's time to come off again (I'm self employed so take a longer break over the quieter summer months).

I would say of my friends nearly all will have colour on toes for hot holidays and most will have fingers done too.

MN is not a reflection of real life.

Runningbird43 · 12/04/2024 20:10

Put it this way o/p, what will happen if you don’t get them done for your holiday?

I’ll give you a clue- absolutely nothing.

so do them or don’t, no one else will care.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 12/04/2024 20:15

decionsdecisions62 · 12/04/2024 18:55

Are you talking about those ludicrous gel plastic things that get stuck onto your fingers? If so, absolutely never. They look horrific. If you are talking about a bit of nail varnish applied by either myself or someone more skilled then I have been known to.

Do you mean acrylics? Ie fake nails added on .

Gel polish isn't "stuck on", they are painted on just like standard varnish but last a lot longer.

Fizbosshoes · 12/04/2024 20:17

I do a practical job, my nails and fingers show it! They usually look their best (and suitable for spending money on) at the end of a holiday! I occassionally do them myself and I have a manicure once a year half way through the Christmas holidays

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 12/04/2024 20:19

I had a manicure c 2003 on a girls hen weekend. First and only time. I don't get it. Money, disposable waste and chemicals and cheap labour. What is the attraction?

VampireWeekday · 12/04/2024 20:20

I have never had them done, and it's never stopped me from enjoying a holiday.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 12/04/2024 20:24

Nobody has ever tried to stop me getting on a plane because my nails are naked.

MichaelAndEagle · 12/04/2024 20:25

MaryFuckingFerguson · 12/04/2024 18:42

😂no! It was a swanky hotel in Caribbean where I had little to do but look at toenails.

Ah toenails? Yes I agree most women on a beach holiday will have their toenails done. Maybe done by themselves we probably wouldn't know.

DamnNutella · 12/04/2024 20:28

I don’t bother. The last time I had a manicure I ruined two nails before the day was finished. I went to the salon today to get my eyebrow shaping (£12.50 😮) and she tried to talk me into getting my nails done as I told her I’m going away next week. I politely declined. I got a a lovely blue OPI nail polish and a good quality topcoat that will last me all spring/summer and I will only do my toenails. Just a clear polish on my fingernails as I like the smooth feeling.

Daisy12Maisie · 12/04/2024 20:31

I used to get my nails, eyebrows and eyelashes done regularly so would time it to look nice for holidays. Now I'm having an expensive year due to driving lessons for one son and the other son needing private tutors so I just don't get anything done. I can't afford it any more. I am going on holiday but all I can afford is to buy sun cream.
If I was to get just one thing done it would be toe nails for a beach holiday.

PersephonePomegranate23 · 12/04/2024 20:36

I never have time before holiday for all that (or any other time, really). A coat or two of Dior Glow does me.

WimpoleHat · 12/04/2024 20:39

I usually do my own in the car on the way to the airport. Much complaining from the rest of the family about the smell of nail polish….!

ThatGutsyOrca · 12/04/2024 20:45

Cancel the holiday!!! How do you even leave the house without nails done?! 💅😂😂😂

Magyk · 12/04/2024 20:49

Milkydumplings · 12/04/2024 17:44

I hope you all at least look after your feet, nothing worse than uncared for hoofs in flip flops, toenails look infinitely better with nail varnish. Bare, buffed fingernails are lovely, though.

In your opinion they look infinitely better, I think painted nails and toenails look tacky. To be honest as long as my feet take me where I want to go I am happy. I am on holiday at the moment and only have walking boots with me so I doubt my hooves are offending anyone.

I agree. I really dislike the look of “done” nails. I don’t like the gel polish that looks really thick or the long nails that go with.

Much prefer neat, short and practical.
