What trainers for city break (Rome) as only pair of shoes?

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 12:57

I'm going to Rome very very soon for the weekend and I can only take one pair of shoes, so I need something that will do me for walking all day but also work for (not hugely fancy) dinners. So no 'running trainers' trainers, but am worried that something like Stan Smiths (which I like look of, but don't own a pair of) won't be comfortable enough.

Anyone got any suggestions of something that ticks all of the boxes?

Rome is having sandal weather so a pain of walking sandals could be an option. I've had a pair of these in the past , there is a full range of sizes but not in every colour, a bargain even for the oyster

Thanks! I haven’t actually checked the forecast (going next week)

Which ever ones you already own that are the most comfortable - you’ll walk miles!

A few days in Rome is not where I’d choose to be breaking in new shoes

marienylonette · 15/03/2024 14:40

I went last weekend for the rugby and wore Nike airforce 1s. Did a huge amount of walking and feet survived!
Hope the sun shines for you!

PoppingTomorrow · 15/03/2024 14:44

I wore New Balance. I wouldn't wear flatform trainers if I were you - not comfortable enough. Rome is tens of thousands of steps and lots of it is cobbled.

Whatever is most comfortable and supportive, not a thin sole.

AnnaMagnani · 15/03/2024 14:47

When I was in Rome most people were wearing hiking sandals.

I had trainers with the thickest soles I could find but was really jealous, it seemed a much more sensible choice.

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 14:48

@BoobyDazzler I only have one pair of trainers and they're not that comfy. I mostly wear brogues or Blundstones - neither of which are suitable for this trip!

I ignored fashion and bought my trainers at Hotter. They were comfy but the hiking sandals would prob have been better.

Bunnyhopskip · 15/03/2024 15:08

I've just ordered some Victoria inglesas for our holiday. I've had a few of pairs of these, walked miles in them and they're sooooo comfy. I've ordered white as feel they'll look elegant with dresses etc, as I want to wear nice clothes on holiday, but also want comfortable feet!

Bluloo · 15/03/2024 15:08

Skechers Slip Ins - they have revolutionised my life!!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 15/03/2024 15:10

Sketches (go walk ot yoga) are great for what you want.

I find them really comfortable and don't need to much breking in.
Colours are good as you often get them in solid single colours (=black).

Only downside is, I manage to walk off the soles within 18 months. But I do a lot of pavement walking!

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 15:20

Hmm - I've never really looked at Skechers before, but I don't hate them!

I have some sketchers but I find that all the ones around at the moment are ugly.

Fitflop Rally. Not the height of style, but adequate and really really good for city walking. John Lewis has a discount offer at the mo on some colours.

I like Fila disruptors for this type of holiday...they're quite wide so when my feet swell they're still comfy.

I just got back from Rome and I wore Replay shoes

In this style

And not a single blister or sore feet.

Fraaahnces · 15/03/2024 16:36

I have sketchers for work and they have been a pain almost from the start. If you want sandals, try SOREL. They’re great. Also Dr Martens.

Thanks for that, I've had these before and paid considerably more than £14!! So I've just ordered some 😀

Op, I buy the Skechers sandals every year and wear them all the time. I have to be careful with what I wear as I've had the agony of plantar fascilitis (cured by steroid injection but never want it back!) and these have been perfect!
And I've done Rome in them twice!

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 17:20

Thanks all. I don’t want sandals! Looking for trainers that work day and evening and are comfortable enough for walking but aren’t completely fugly!

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 15/03/2024 17:48

I've worn Sketchers Go Walk on cobbles in a hot city and they did the job.

Mine are black with a white sole and a bit of pink at the laces and tongue. Not really smart for an evening out but wouldn't stand out as especially scruffy either unless you were going somewhere upmarket.

Mairzydotes · 15/03/2024 17:55

I've always found New Balance and Rocket Dog comfy for city walking as they are quite cushioned . I imagine that Skechers will be comfy too.

Is there any way you can fit a lightweight pair into your luggage? Don't underestimate a fresh pair of shoes when you have been walking all day.

Agree with this, I went to NYC recently and was glad all the shoes/boots I took were already broken in-2500 steps a day needs comfort!

mamakoukla · 15/03/2024 18:00

I’d go for whatever keeps my feet happy. Hours of walking done in Rome; absolutely needed comfortable footwear

Me too, we go on Monday. It’s going to be soo busy.
We have 22kg luggage so planning 2 pairs trainers- cream suede puma and new balance for comfort. Plus sandals for evening.
I’d go for comfy white leather trainers if only one pair but ideally broken in

Jandob · 15/03/2024 18:07

But you can wear trainers and take thin fancy sandals or folding ballerinas.
