What trainers for city break (Rome) as only pair of shoes?

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 12:57

I'm going to Rome very very soon for the weekend and I can only take one pair of shoes, so I need something that will do me for walking all day but also work for (not hugely fancy) dinners. So no 'running trainers' trainers, but am worried that something like Stan Smiths (which I like look of, but don't own a pair of) won't be comfortable enough.

Anyone got any suggestions of something that ticks all of the boxes?

I've just come back from Rome and I bought white leather sketchers.

You will walk thousands of miles (or at least feel like you have).

@QuestionForHelp

Do you have some kind of foot phobia ? It really is not normal to have that kind of reaction to seeing people's feet in normal sandals which people buy to actually walk in for comfort . Utterly over the top and weird reaction and post .

I had these for disneyworld last year. They are not like normal converse as they are wider and were like walking on air. Plus they can be worn with a dress or jeans/tracksuit bottoms.

New Balance or Asics, plenty of arch support (you could also add supportive inner soles)

I cant talk for that other poster but what I will say is when I first saw crocs, they made me hugely angry, not sure why, really ragefull. I had a real reaction to them

I love shoes though, Ive got hundreds of pairs so am a real shoe lover, the shapes, the designs etc. Im fussy about them, perhaps they are the same

Epidote · 24/03/2024 20:45

Get the pair you walk more comfortable in it, no a new one that will have to adapt form the beginning to your walk etc.
If they are rusty and old, on the day back buy a new pair, pay it in euros and treat yourself to a coffee/ pastries with the few pounds you had saved and leave the old pair in a Roman bin.

Deichmann Graceland trainers - very comfy. If walking sandals Free Spirit (used to be called Earth Spirit) are brilliant

QuestionForHelp · 24/03/2024 20:50

In your opinion.

Yes but some people think Botticelli's Venus is rubbish. Lots of people buy the National Enquirer and think it's fantastic.
Some opinions are clearly right. Some are clearly wrong.

No I don't have a foot phobia. Tevas are ugly. Dirty feet are unpleasant. most people don't have nice looking or cared for feet. Wear your Tevas and your birkenstocks for your comfort but know that plenty of people are looking at your ugly shoes and skanky looking feet and judging you!

LOL glad you didn't have to shell out. What did you think of Rome?! It's an amazing place isn't it?

Brilliant time thanks! Although I spent a lot of it looking at what people were wearing on their feet! (Not a sandal in sight, btw, ugly or otherwise)

Fitflop Rally, I had plain black as duty shoes, I'm currently on my 3rd pair of white ones, so comfortable. I tend to overlap them so my newest for smart and the older ones for everyday, can't be beaten for comfort, all leather too so they clean well

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 27/03/2024 19:43

If it rains as much as it has the past 2 days, make sure your shoes are waterproof or bring changes while others dry! A very soggy experience

Doubt it !! I was the only one in sandals on the first day🤗

merrymelodies · 28/03/2024 02:50

I went to Rome when 6 months pg and developed painful bunions from all the walking in flat ballerinas. What was I thinking?! Wear something like Birkenstocks, which are supportive and comfortable and go with almost anything.

I judge people who judge people for what they choose to wear, so even stevens 🤷🏽‍♀️

bingohandjob · 28/03/2024 11:27

Do you have any that you know are comfy? I wore Marimekko Activeride for 5 days there and walked around 25km+ a day and not one blister - but I knew they were going to be comfortable as I'd worn them loads previously. My worry was I wouldn't look smart enough for certain evening activities but I quickly realised it didn't matter. I was SO glad I went for comfort over style - if you've already got something you know is a good workhorse comfortable trainer, take them! I took Teva and "smarter" Fitflops - didn't wear them.

Thanks! I haven’t actually checked the forecast (going next week)

I’m going next week as well and was having the exact same dilemma though I am going to allow myself 2 pairs. I have FITFLOPS and have ordered a pair of New Balance. Weather forecast is beautiful at the moment so walking sandals would be great. Look at Fitflop, they are usually great. Thanks by the way and have a great time!

NCfor24 · 01/04/2024 18:23

My FitFlop trainers were comfy from day one. But I'd still take some super flat minimalist sandals too....maybe in a pewter or metallic shade to glam them up a bit.

NannaKaren · 01/04/2024 19:58

look at Fitflop website !

NippySweetie16 · 01/04/2024 21:40

Just chipping in to say Sketchers are microfiber lined. Make my feet burn so beware if that's you too! Honestly, breaking in new shoes - even trainers - in Rome is to be avoided if at all possible. Any older classics lurking at the back of the wardrobe? Take blister plasters as a backup!

JMSA · 01/04/2024 22:03

My platform Converse hi-tops are incredibly comfy. Like walking on air.
