What trainers for city break (Rome) as only pair of shoes?

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 12:57

I'm going to Rome very very soon for the weekend and I can only take one pair of shoes, so I need something that will do me for walking all day but also work for (not hugely fancy) dinners. So no 'running trainers' trainers, but am worried that something like Stan Smiths (which I like look of, but don't own a pair of) won't be comfortable enough.

Anyone got any suggestions of something that ticks all of the boxes?

Oh forgot!! I had got some Solamon for Christmas and they've hardly been off my feet 😀

Branleuse · 16/03/2024 10:23

Nike air force 1 are super comfy and go with almost anything.
If I'm going somewhere with only one pair of shoes I either would take those, my fabric Skechers because less sweaty, or classic DM boots

I wore these last year on our holiday. I tucked a padded insole inside because I need a bit of extra support on my instep in any trainers but they were so comfortable. We walked for miles, especially in New York and they held up far better than my Sketchers.

It's currently 12 degrees.

I was going to say. Even i it's 18 degrees during the day when OP goes, it's not going to be sandal weather at night.

I was in Rome last Easter and wore Adidas Ozwego on my feet.

Izwego

The tourist uniform last year was chunky trainers and the obligatory trench coat - everyone was wearing one. However, It did rain for 2 days whilst I was there.

@Triptastico - just added trench coat to my holiday shopping list!

Nike airforce or dunks are super comfortable and look nice with skirts, dresses, jeans, leggings, the lot!

hettie · 16/03/2024 13:31

So my air force ones are very comfy but I think they're a little round/chunky with a skirt. For skirts I think Nike Air max are better and also really comfy (plus if you're getting them new they have soft fabric on the ankle). They're often good colours and the new ones with a touch of leopard print are nice.

Lemonademoney · 16/03/2024 14:51

Whatever you wear make sure it’s comfortable! You will walk miles on very hard pavements. Loved loved loved Rome but it was very hard on the feet

LuckySantangelo35 · 16/03/2024 16:48

NO SKETCHERS!!

whatever you do OP, they are seriously uncool

what about Adidas sambas?

jimmybim · 16/03/2024 16:49

These are comfortable and have zips so you can get in and out of them quickly.

I work at a lot of trade shows and walk 30k steps on those days. I have two pairs of sketchers that have worked well for me (I've tried others but these are now my show trainers). They need to look smart enough for work and also be comfy and supportive. I love my black and gold Sketchers Unos for how they look and the black with a tiny bit of pink Sketchers D'Lux Walker for comfort. They have held up really well. I usually end up walking miles in the evenings in them too. Getting the right sock that works with them is also important. If it's warm and a bit dusty then a bare foot in a shoe can really rub. Even in August I wear socks and trainers with a dress for the shows I work at. Less sweaty and doesn't rub.

NewUser1111 · 16/03/2024 17:07

When you say “work dinners” what are you talking about? I lived in Rome a few years ago and do not underestimate how smart they expect people to be- bella figura and all that

Which ones did you get? Mine are wearing out but they don’t make that style any longer.

Never mind slippery in the rain.

DutifulDaughterWifeMother · 16/03/2024 19:47

These are the most comfortable pair of trainers and are not offensive looking considering they are Fitflop.

You will be doing a lot of walking & your feet will thank you!

Since I discovered these all my Branded Trainers haven’t seen the light of day. I didn’t even wear sandals once last year & they wash well. I cannot wear dirty white trainers & I have worn mine whilst taking my dog out. My husband wishes he could keep trainers clean like me! 😉

Normally these are £90+ but John Lewis have 15% off at the minute.

I'm also off to Rome next week for a long weekend and I'm planning on wearing my new balance. I've been before and did get more dressed up in the evening but it's such a casual city anyway I think nice trainers will work fine into the evening, that's what I'm planning to do this time!

Robinni · 16/03/2024 21:05

Birkenstock bend low trainers or if sandals mayari.

HippyKayYay · 16/03/2024 21:18

Oh my - clearly no consensus here!

When we went to Rome my mate wore Adidas All Stars. She looked super cool in everything she wore - dresses, jeans etc.

She didn't complain about aching feet either and we walked our socks off everyday.

I wore Adidas ultra bounce trainers, lightweight and comfy.

It's funny cos I'd describe myself as a Nike girl, yet here I am spreading the virtues of Adidas...!

You've picked a great city to visit :)

HippyKayYay · 16/03/2024 23:05

@NewUser1111 I didn't say 'work dinners', I said the trainers had to work for dinner as well as walking all day! No working will be happening on this trip (other than the serious job of eating as much gelato as I can stomach)

So I have narrowed it down (based purely on aesthetics and what will go with my clothes)
Victoria Berlin
Stan Smith
Nike AF1 (although have never bought Nike as always found them too narrow)
Hoff (Rome ideally!)
NB 327 (possibly, last time I tried similar on I found the soul too thick and narrow and kept on rolling off them!)

Although I am wondering if I should just try and squeeze my running trainers (https://www.altrarunning.eu/uk/escalante-3-woman-al0a7r71447.html) into my tiny carry on bag and wear my brogues so I have those for the evenings...

My birkenstock trainers were the most comfortable thing I wore, my Birkenstock boots were quite slippy on the cobblestones in the rain.

I found walking around really broke me, my feet and legs at the end of every day!!!!

ThePoshUns · 17/03/2024 08:58

That might work OP.
I don't know why people are suggesting sandals, it's not sandal weather in Rome right now and tbh Rome is quite grubby so I'd keep your feet covered up! Have a lovely time.
