What trainers for city break (Rome) as only pair of shoes?

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 12:57

I'm going to Rome very very soon for the weekend and I can only take one pair of shoes, so I need something that will do me for walking all day but also work for (not hugely fancy) dinners. So no 'running trainers' trainers, but am worried that something like Stan Smiths (which I like look of, but don't own a pair of) won't be comfortable enough.

Anyone got any suggestions of something that ticks all of the boxes?

Rome is having sandal weather so a pain of walking sandals could be an option. I've had a pair of these in the past , there is a full range of sizes but not in every colour, a bargain even for the oyster

I’ve had similar for walking and they are really comfie! Op I ‘ve got s. smiths cos I love the look but for me they are defo not comfortable enough for a weekend sightseeing in hot weather.

Icecoldtulip · 23/03/2024 18:08

I’m just taking my Nikes. They are comfy and broken in. They will just have to do for dinners too, we won’t be going anywhere posh so don’t think it’ll matter.

QuestionForHelp · 23/03/2024 22:43

I can enormously recommend these. Covered miles in Naples in them. So so comfy and no breaking in requires.

but unfortunately hideous to look at. I don't know how anyone can go out in public in those kind of things. It's like Birkenstock sandals especially on men but also women.

I don't care how comfortable they are, they are repellent visually. Urgh.

if you are desperate for comfort, what's wrong with a stylish pair of trainers.

Issorryreallythehardestword · 23/03/2024 23:46

White trainers go with everything, I have leather ones from Clarks but if you prefer canvas then Superga are good. I love my white leather trainers and wear them everywhere including work! Birkenstock also do some of you need extra support.

My Dd got these in the sale - they were used to walk round a big city for a long weekend and were incredibly comfy. There are lots of versions. They are specifically for walking along streets.

I took a pair of Ecco lace ups to Rome for sightseeing. By the end of the first day, I was hobbling and could hardly walk, they proved to be so uncomfortable. They looked as though they should have been ever so comfy. However, the leather was hard and wouldn't give, and they rubbed terribly on my feet, even though I had bought them a good time before and I thought I had worn them in. I ended up limping to a Camper store in Rome and buying some sandals to wear going out of the shop, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to walk home.

HippyKayYay · 24/03/2024 09:48

Folks! I love how invested you all are in my mini break footwear…

Trip has come and gone. In the end I didn’t have time to get anything new. So I made do with my grubby running shoes which I squeezed in my tiny carry on and I wore a pair of chunky boots on the plane. Worked a treat - feet were happy after 11 miles of walking each day.

For the record and as suspected while it was a lovely temperature it was not sandal weather!

Was it these ones? They do loads of lace- ups but the ones with the holes in the sole are very bouncy. Dd tends to do a springy walk when she puts hers on!

OP glad you had a lovely time. Useful thread! I wore teva sandals for 5 months solid when travelling as my trainers got muddy and confiscated in New Zealand!

edit to add: trainers were confiscated at the airport as deemed a danger to New Zealand flora and fauna as they may bring alien species (seeds) in! Bit embarrassing…

In your opinion.

Lots of stylish/cool/trendy/young/whatever people wear Teva and Birkenstocks.

Exactly! I remember threads where people were saying Tevas were what the cool trendy people were wearing so this is just an opinion.

I have a pair of Tevas for practical reasons mainly, and the aesthetic was nicer than other alternatives. Last worn for crossing a river during a hike, then shoved back in my bag in favour of warm socks and hiking boots once over the water 😊

I'm just baffled that anyone would find these sandals too hideous to contemplate. I would happily wear them for city sightseeing in hot weather. I wonder whether the poster was actually clicking on the right link?

Oh that's so funny - we are all still blathering on about various sandals v trainers and you have already been ! At least your old trainers were comfy - hope you had a lovely time !

HalfasleepChrisintheMorning · 24/03/2024 17:42

I haven’t been yet.
I’ve massively over packed and have 3 different pairs of trainers and 2 pairs of sandals 🤣

Wow you got very offended by a pretty benign pair of sandals. I’m not sure how anyone could consider them ‘hideous’ but each to their own 😂

Er... what?

When I click on the link it goes through to a pair of thin-strapped flat sandals in cream leather. No actual foot at all, tattooed or not.

What link are you clicking on?!

Er... no. You are missing the point. Some people (mostly supermodels who would look good in a bin bag) with near perfect highly manicured feet, very expensive designer clothes, styled to the nth degree wear Birkenstocks and may just about look passable but the shoes themselves remain hideous.

Tevas are worse. They are grotesque for many many reasons. First is that they are ugly looking in design and shape of the sole and straps. Second is they look ultra naff in that "I'm a hippy on a treking holiday and I eat tofu and read the Guardian way". Third is that few people have pleasant looking feet and certainly not after treking around a dusty city. No one wants to see other peoples feet on full display especially dirty ones. Tevas especially show too much foot - bunions, hammer toes, etc etc. Even foot model feet aren't nice to look at. Finally the basic designs (strap along side of foot and strap across widest part, and ankle strap) are deeply unflattering and that's before you get to nasty patterns.

Ugly and revolting.

How weird, maybe it clicks through to different things at different times or something? Hence all the wildly differing opinions on the sandals!

Yes, they truly were horrendous, not surprised at the previous posters outrage about them!!!

Kleavers · 24/03/2024 19:54

We are just back from Rome. I'd suggest Skechers or something equally comfortable. I can't remember a time when I've walked so far, queued so long or gone up and down so many hills!
