What trainers for city break (Rome) as only pair of shoes?

I'm going to Rome very very soon for the weekend and I can only take one pair of shoes, so I need something that will do me for walking all day but also work for (not hugely fancy) dinners. So no 'running trainers' trainers, but am worried that something like Stan Smiths (which I like look of, but don't own a pair of) won't be comfortable enough.

Anyone got any suggestions of something that ticks all of the boxes?

I am going after Easter and planning on taking my adidas grand court trainers. Really comfy and they have a leopard side stripe bit so a bit dressier than standard trainers ( I wears them at work in the city/Canary Wharf without a second thought)

but I agree that I wouldn’t test out new trainers in time unless I was Very sure of the first/likelihood of avoiding blisters.

I find my Stan Smiths really comfy and have worn them on many city breaks including Rome as they look good with jeans & dresses (take plenty of socks) means you don’t have to change if you want to go straight from sightseeing to apero to dinner. Word of warning though you DEFINITELY need to break them in a few times. I took these pumas on my last city-break hol and they were also really versatile.

Avoid Vejas - they are not comfy. I have had supergas but found sole wasn’t comfy enough for full days walking. At the end of the day you’re in Rome, there’s plenty of shops for you to pick up some cheap sandals if it’s nicer than anticipated :) https://www.designerwear.co.uk/product/womens-white-black-puma-army-trainer-36524?variant=1336&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw48-vBhBbEiwAzqrZVGDnym9f-k1iReLS49zjMPR3OlSRQv7h6mQYRGBJOrWeHFruzoBJgRoC_XsQAvD_BwE

I went a couple of weeks ago and wore Adidas gazelles. Did an average of 20k steps a day, wouldn't dream of going in unbroken in new shoes! Decide and get some asap so you can wear them for a few days before you go.

TheDuck2018 · 15/03/2024 18:25

I'd avoid trainers if it's going to be really hot, that's why I suggested sandals, especially as this year's Skechers are glittery so would go from day to night easily. My feet would ache like mad all bundled up when I'm doing loads of walking and it's really hot!

Revelatio · 15/03/2024 18:32

I wore lace up ankle boots. They’re Russell and Bromley so buttery soft with a decent sole. Looked good with dresses and skirts (I only wear dresses and skirts), and they were so comfortable, I walked for miles.

But you can wear trainers and take thin fancy sandals or folding ballerinas.

I don’t have either! Seriously it’s brogues or heavy boots. I also don’t think it will be warm enough for sandals in the evening next week!

I don’t think it is going to be really hot next week. Low 20s maybe, during the day. Around 10 degrees at night.

But yes - I know I should have thought about this ages ago!

keep in mind that lots of the parks and gardens have gravel paths. If you plan on visiting these sort of places you need something that will cope with the dust and are easy to clean.

unless you are going to high end places, you'll be absolutely fine in whatever style of trainer you feel most comfortable in.

I’m also going to Rome and have bought these. They are very comfy.

This may not win fashion awards but you can get it tomorrow, it is breathable mesh and super comfy.

Not the colour in that link though - mine are pale blue.

Fashionandcomfortlover · 15/03/2024 19:07

Russell and Bromley have gorgeous range of trainers, comfortable and look cool too 😎

Salacia · 15/03/2024 19:15

Is there any reason why you don’t want to wear your brogues? I’m not a trainer person and wear brogues/monkstraps most of the time - they’re my comfiest shoes and I normally wear them on this sort of break (was in Italy last month and did over 20,000 steps a day in them with no issues). They’re already worn in and go with my wardrobe. I don’t find them any warmer than trainers when worn with cotton trainer style socks (so they’re not visible).

I’d just worry that any new shoes, however comfy they are to others, are a bit of a gamble - especially if you’re only taking one pair. Suppose if they are it’s a good excuse to go shoe shopping and whilst there though…

fruitpastille · 15/03/2024 19:17

I've got some M&S ones that are similar to new balance and I've found them really comfy and bouncy. When I went to Rome I had some rocket dog trainers that I thought were comfy but I had to buy compeed plasters in a pharmacy! We had heavy rain so was glad to have a second pair of shoes.

I find my vejas super comfortable

Monstermunchy · 15/03/2024 19:29

@HippyKayYay I’ve walked miles in my stan smiths - they’d be perfect.
I’m also off to Rome next week (weather has been described to me today as summer during the day and winter at night!)

EmmaGrundyForPM · 15/03/2024 19:31

I second those who say take you're comfiest trainers as they are already worn in.

I wear trainers in Greece in the summer if we're walking. Yes, I know they're not as cool as sandals but they are better if the track is dusty/stony/rutted.

Is there a reason you can't take two pairs of shoes? When we went to Rome a few years ago in November I wore trainers but took a pair of slightly fancier evening shoes. Even if you're doing hand luggage only you should be able to squeeze in a pair of shoes.

soupfiend · 15/03/2024 19:38

I took 4 pairs of boots/shoes

No matter how reliable and comfortable they are (and all mine were), my feet really killed me at the end of each day, the cobbles are really difficult to walk on for me, plus all the shuffling round. We were walking about 8 miles a day

I tried to make sure I wore different shoes each day so that my feet got a rest from the previous day shoes if that makes sense.

MillicentFaucet · 15/03/2024 19:41

OP you need a pair of Hoff Rome 😁 I've a few different cities & my Viennas were extremely comfy on a 3 week tour of Namibia last summer.

Adidas gazelles or sambas

Weelegs29 · 15/03/2024 20:18

I have a pair of beige Nike dunks that work perfectly from day to night, I actually took them on my last trip away and wore them for plenty of miles during the day with jeans and then with a satin skirt for restaurants at night

ThePoshUns · 15/03/2024 20:20

I was in Rome last week and certainly not sandal weather!
I'd agree with PP about Nike Airforce 1s go great with wide leg trousers/ jeans.
