What trainers for city break (Rome) as only pair of shoes?

HippyKayYay · 15/03/2024 12:57

I'm going to Rome very very soon for the weekend and I can only take one pair of shoes, so I need something that will do me for walking all day but also work for (not hugely fancy) dinners. So no 'running trainers' trainers, but am worried that something like Stan Smiths (which I like look of, but don't own a pair of) won't be comfortable enough.

Anyone got any suggestions of something that ticks all of the boxes?

Adidas samba or gazelle. Nike dunk, air force or gamma. New balance 327. All of them are very comfy and I've walked miles in and also trendy with great colour ways!

Colinorpercy · 15/03/2024 23:52

I’d probably go for Nike waffle, dunk or air max 90. Or new balance or adidas Gazelle bold.

Don’t forget a thick moisturiser/foot cream and thick fluffy socks for the end of the day. I found Rome was exhausting especially in August. The cream/socks were bliss.

Wow - thanks for all the new suggestions! Lots of good ideas here

I love Liu Jo platform trainers, and they have served me well in Rome, London and Paris. The platform really cushions the foot. Decent socks are a necessity too. I wore Marco Moreo trainers last year in London and it was my socks that made walking uncomfortable! Liu Jo are Italian so you could probably buy them in Rome - I did see a pair I lusted after but didn't buy in the end! They've been comfortable from day 1.

These aren't the ones I have (I have several different pairs and love them!) but this is what they look like. You may be able to buy them locally to you - I have.

I also wore Marco Moreo boots in Paris last week for a couple of the days I was there. They have good thick cleats on the sole, so they were also very comfortable. Marco Moreo are also Italian and the quality is fabulous. I didn't see any though when I was in Rome, but I was only there for a couple of days and I am sure they are somewhere to be found!

I echo others - wear your trainers during the day but pick up a lightweight and cheap pair of ballet flats or scrappy sandals for her evening. It's really nice to change your footwear for dinner if you've been done 20k+ steps that day in your trainers, no matter how comfy they are.

I agree, I exchanged my boots for my trainers one night and while they hadn't hurt my feet, my socks had got uncomfortable and it was good to be able to change.

Enjoy Rome, it's amazing! Hoping to be able to go back again soon!

I have no issue walking miles and miles in Converse but I understand they’re not as comfortable for everyone.

Baycitystroller · 16/03/2024 05:58

Walked miles in Paris recently in Nike dunks. Very comfy.

Fabricwitch · 16/03/2024 07:14

I would bring a neutral pair of TOMs. I have several and know they are comfy and my go to for city breaks. They didn't take any breaking in for me but I know different people find different shoes comfy, for example I can't stand Superga already mentioned, so you should definitely bring something that you know you find comfortable.

PoppingTomorrow · 16/03/2024 07:52

I would add - Rome v dusty underfoot. I made the mistake of taking a new pair of cream canvas and suede trainers - they got dirty v quickly

ASighMadeOfStone · 16/03/2024 07:55

Another vote for Rally or Skechers.
You won't need sandals for the evening. And the evenings are still cool. And will be for at least another month, if not more. It's getting up to low twenties in the day, but going down to below 10 in the evening.

ASighMadeOfStone · 16/03/2024 08:04

Just checked the Italian weather forecast for Rome for the next week and it'll go up to 18-19 in the day and down as low as 7 in the evenings. That's up to next weekend.
The forecast tends to be very accurate.

Pozz · 16/03/2024 08:22

I agree that Sketchers are comfy but if it rains they soak up water through the toes like a sponge!

Skechers Slip Ins - they have revolutionised my life!!

I second that! 😂

Also agree. A slim light weight pair of sandals in your hold bag.

itsgettingweird · 16/03/2024 08:37

I'd go for white reebox classics. They are leather and can be worn with dresses for evening or jeggings. Plus are comfy.

However you say you can't take another pair of shoes. I'd try and for a pair of Birkenstock style flip flops in if I could as they don't take up much room and it's really hot there atm.

ASighMadeOfStone · 16/03/2024 08:54

It's currently 12 degrees.

Hi OP

First off, I'm so jealous! I ADORE Rome ❤️ you're going to have a wonderful time!

Depending on any specific foot/ankle support you generally need for lots of walking i actually wore a pair of almost all black Nikes last x 2 times we were there. I found the still looked really nice with all my outfits (I tend to dress in tue smarter side of casual). I also favour lots of black/navy/grey/tan so while the soles and some piping on the trainees were white that black just blended in.

It meant I could not only walk miles but if any cobbles (Rome is LOTS of cobbles) were wet I didn't slip.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 16/03/2024 09:03

I also wore these for x 2 walking around Naples in last summers heatwave. Bizarrely my feet didn't even sweat

schuh tiara flatform

Sorry, link fail

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 16/03/2024 09:10

See even in the height of a Mediterranean summer I still find shoes that can cope with the difference in terrain in a city trumps the need to keep my feet cool. The Nikes I've worn - and tbh I just spend £70 max on a pair that I can then wear to death when home but not necessary a very fashion forward pair - have been mesh on top so my feet from don't get too hot anyway

Good call. Also a battier between your feet and dubious hotel flooring Grin
